The use of green algae ulva meal (UM) (Ulva rigida) was evaluated as a replacement for soybean meal in a practical diet formulated to contain 28% crude protein, 7.50% lipid and 15 kJ gross energy g(-1). Soybean meal was replaced by 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% of UM (diets U-0, U-1, U-2 and U-3, respectively). The feeding experiment was carried out in an open circulation system. Each diet treatment was applied to triplicate groups of 30 fish (21.37 +/- 0.193 g average wet weight) per tank (400 L) arranged in a completely randomized design. The fish were hand fed to satiation four times daily between 07.00 and 18.00 hours for 75 days. There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in growth performance among fish fed with diets U-0, U-1 and U-2. However, fish fed diet U-3 had significantly lower growth (P < 0.05) than those fed diets U-0, U-1 and U-2. Fish fed the control diet (U-0) and diets including 10% and 20% UM had significantly (P < 0.05) better daily weight gain, relative growth weight, specific growth weight and protein efficiencies ratio than those fed with diet U-3. Feed conversion ratio increased with increasing UM content, but only the value found in fish fed with diet U-3 differed significantly (P < 0.05) from all other treatments. Survival rates ranged between 91.11% and 93.33%. No feed-related mortality was observed during the entire experimental period. Apparent protein digestibility (APD) of diets ranged from 87.06 to 69.91% and was lowest for fish fed with diet U-3. In general, APD values decreased with increasing inclusion levels of UM, explained by the increase of anti-nutritional factors and high non-digestible fibre content. Compared to the control diet (U-0), fish fed diets containing high levels of UM had lower levels of carcass lipid and higher levels of carcass moisture. Results show that this product can be included by up to 20% in practical male Nile tilapia diets with no detrimental effects.

Summary: This study overcomes the limitations of phase change materials in thermal conductivity and liquid leakage through a stabilization-form solution. By utilizing Hexadecane as PCM, SEBS trTblock copolymer, LDPE, and EG, the researchers successfully prepared form-stable composites with improved heat transfer capabilities. Testing showed no hexadecane leakage at a 75% mass fraction, surpassing values reported in the literature.

Summary: The rapid global spread of COVID-19 and other anthropogenic threats such as global climate change are posing significant economic challenges to the aquaculture sector. A positive correlation between the impacts of the pandemic and anthropogenic stressors was detected, with different effects on various parts of the supply chain. The use of integrated multitrophic aquaculture (IMTA) methods may enhance resilience to multiple stressors, providing different market options during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Summary: This paper discusses the preparation of an asymmetric microfiltration carbon membrane made of mineral coal powder and phenolic resin. The membrane material displayed a hydrophobic character, but oxidation treatment increased its hydrophilic character, resulting in improved permeability and industrial wastewater filtration performance. The retention of organic matter and divalent ions in the wastewater was also significant.

Summary: This research work focuses on the extraction of cellulosic fibers from Tunisian olive sawdust through alkaline treatment and investigates the structure and adsorption properties of the obtained cellulosic substrates. The results indicate that alkaline treatment improves the accessibility of the cellulosic support and demonstrates an adsorption capacity for organic dyes. These findings suggest that the extracted cellulosic fibers may serve as a promising adsorbent for organic dye removal from aqueous solutions.

Improving the Heat Transfer of Phase Change Composites for Thermal Energy Storage by Adding Copper: Preparation and Thermal Properties

Abdelwaheb Trigui, Makki Abdelmouleh

Summary: Phase change materials (PCMs) are effective thermal energy storage technology for utilizing solar heat and optimizing energy consumption in buildings. The poor heat transfer and shape stabilization of PCMs hinder their widespread practical use. This article focuses on the application of shape stabilization method by adding copper microparticles to organic PCMs to form phase change composites (PCC). The PCCs exhibit enhanced thermal conductivity and shape stability during phase transition, making them suitable for practical application in thermal energy storage and management.

Summary: This study produced new types of bio-composite phase change materials (BCPCM) with improved thermal properties using spent ground coffee powder (C), beeswax (W), and low-density polyethylene (LDPE). It was found that ground coffee effectively combined with natural wax and LDPE. The use of waste coffee grounds improved the thermal stability of BCPCM. The addition of LDPE reduced the melting time and improved the thermal energy storage reaction time.

Performance enhancement of a thermal energy storage system using shape-stabilized LDPE/hexadecane/SEBS composite PCMs by copper oxide addition

Abdelwaheb Trigui, Makki Abdelmouleh, Chokri Boudaya

Summary: Thermal Energy Storage (TES) technologies based on Phase Change Materials (PCMs) have promoted the development of clean and renewable energy. However, the application of organic PCMs is limited due to their low thermal conductivities and liquid leakage during phase transition. In this study, copper oxide (CuO) microparticles were added to enhance thermal performance and shape-stabilized composite PCMs (SSPCMs) were prepared. The results showed that the addition of CuO increased the degradation temperature and weight loss temperature of the composites. There was no leakage or impairment of the composite PCM during the heating and cooling processes. The presence of CuO microparticles reduced the supercooling effect and increased the energy storage/release capacity of the SSPCM composites.
