Carbonate reservoirs exhibit heterogeneous pore systems and a wide variety of grain types, which affect the rock's elastic properties and the reservoir parameter relationships. To study the Albian carbonates in the Campos Basin, a methodology is proposed to predict the amount of microporosity and the representative aspect ratio of these inclusions. The method assumes three pore-space scales in two representative inclusion scenarios: 1) a macro-mesopore median aspect ratio from the thin-section digital image analysis (DIA) and 2) a microporosity aspect ratio predicted based on the measured P-wave velocities. Through a laboratory analysis of 10 grainstone core samples of the Albian age, the P- and S-wave velocities (Vp and Vs) are evaluated at effective pressures of 0-10 MPa. The analytical theories in the proposed methodology are functions of the aspect ratios from the differential effective medium (DEM) theory, the macro-mesopore system recognized from the DIA, the amount of microporosity determined by the difference between the porosities estimated from laboratorial helium-gas and the thin-section petrographic images, and the P-wave velocities under dry effective pressure conditions. The DIA procedure is applied to estimate the local and global parameters, and the textural implications concerning ultrasonic velocities and image resolution. The macro-mesopore inclusions contribute to stiffer rocks and higher velocities, whereas the microporosity inclusions contribute to softer rocks and lower velocities. We observe a high potential for this methodology, which uses the microporosity aspect ratio inverted from Vp to predict Vs with a good agreement. The results acceptably characterize the Albian grainstones. The representative macro-mesopore aspect ratio is 0.5, and the inverted microporosity aspect ratio ranges from 0.01 to 0.07. The effective pressure induced an effect of slight porosity reduction during the triaxial tests, mainly in the microporosity inclusions, slightly changing the amount and the aspect ratio of the microporosity. Summary: The study investigates the 3D microarchitecture of newly formed trabecular tissue in cortical bone defects and shows that the woven bone trabecular network is organized according to the principle of tensegrity, with highly symmetric geometric motifs. The presence of biomaterials did not disrupt trabecular microarchitecture, suggesting that the formation of intrinsic trabecular motifs is maintained regardless of the presence of a bone graft.

Pressure effects in Nur's critical porosity model estimates for carbonate rocks

Marco Ceia, Roseane Missagia, Irineu Lima Neto

Summary: This paper analyzed four carbonate rock datasets to investigate the relationship between misfits of the Nur's model and experimental data with porosity and pressure variations through best-fitting regressions. A modification on the Nur's model accounting for pressure influence on porosity was proposed, significantly improving accuracy with average relative errors 50% smaller than original estimates. The performance of the modified model varied for different carbonate textures, highlighting the influence of siliciclastic content on the predictability error.

Summary: This study compares three XCT-based methods for estimating the permeability of soil aggregates and suggests calibrating faster methods against a slower but more reliable reference method using at least one 3D image. APES and PNM were found to be more time consuming than IBP-KC, with PNM being sensitive to thin pore ramifications.

Summary: Giant hydrocarbon reservoirs in lacustrine and lagoonal carbonate reservoir systems have made Brazil one of the top petroleum producers in the world. Studying outcrop analogs is a common technique to understand these reservoirs. By using Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry, this study compared the pore characteristics of outcrop stromatolites to the Brazilian pre-salt stromatolites, showing similar permeability and pore compressibility behaviors.

Summary: X-ray computed microtomography (mu CT) is a versatile technique used extensively in multiple application areas to investigate bio-based systems. Recent progress has allowed for the characterization of three-dimensional material structures and quantification of features using CT, as well as the development of computed nanotomography (nCT) and four-dimensional (4D) characterization. The increase in temporal and spatial resolutions has led to a large amount of data that can be processed using deep learning techniques to automate data processing and maximize beamline capabilities. This review highlights the importance of combining computational tools with experimental data in this field.

Assessing energy balance via seismic and mechanical observations in high temperature induced crack damage in marbles

Federico Vagnon, Sergio Carmelo Vinciguerra, Cesare Comina, Chiara Colombero, Anna Maria Ferrero, Roseane Missagia

Summary: Assessing the physical and mechanical behavior of rocks under different temperatures is crucial for evaluating rock integrity in various applications. This study tested marbles with different compositions and observed significant thermal cracking, mass loss, and porosity increase at temperatures above 400 degrees C. The dominant dissipated energy and multiple scattering effects indicate the generation of new fracturing surfaces. The percentage of dolomite was found to have a high influence on the mechanical behavior even at low temperatures.

Summary: Temperature-induced damage affects the physical properties of carbonate rocks, and can be characterized through an integrated approach involving microstructural observations and optical analyses. The study establishes a generalized relationship between physical properties and thermal induced damage, providing a valuable index applicable to a wide range of carbonate rocks.
