Conduits serve as major pathways for groundwater flow in karst aquifers. Locating them from the surface, however, is one of the most challenging tasks in karst research. Geophysical methods are often deployed to help locate voids by mapping variations of physical properties of the subsurface. Conduits can cause significant contrasts of some physical properties that can be detected; other subsurface features such as water-bearing fractures often yield similar contrasts, which are difficult to distinguish from the effects of the conduits. This study used electrical resistivity method to search for an unmapped karst conduit that recharges Royal Spring in the Inner Bluegrass karst region, Kentucky, USA. Three types of resistivity techniques (surface 2D survey, quasi-3D survey, and time-lapse survey) were used to map and characterize resistivity anomalies. Some of the major anomalies were selected as drilling targets to verify the existence of the conduits. Drilling near an anomaly identified by an electrical resistivity profile resulted in successful penetration of a major water-filled conduit. The drilling results also suggest that, in this study area, low resistivity anomalies in general are associated with water-bearing features. However, differences in the anomaly signals between the water-filled conduit and other water-bearing features such as water-filled fracture zones were undistinguishable. The electrical resistivity method is useful in conduit detection by providing potential drilling targets. Knowledge of geology and hydrogeology about the site and professional judgment also played important roles in locating the major conduit. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Numerical model development for investigating hydrologic pathways in shallow fluviokarst

Summary: This study developed a combined discrete-continuum fluviokarst numerical model and applied it to the Cane Run-Royal Spring basin in Kentucky, USA. Multi-objective calibration improved the representation of stream-cave connectivity, but was computationally expensive. Results provided evidence of a mature fluviokarst basin with a well-defined fracture-conduit network and phreatic aquifer.

Summary: High-resolution LiDAR data and a detailed landslide inventory were used to develop a combined machine-learning and statistical approach for landslide-susceptibility mapping in Magoffin County, Kentucky. Twelve important geomorphic variables were identified through the use of a random forest classifier and logistic regression. The logistic-regression model had a performance evaluation of 0.83 AUC and was validated with a neighboring landslide inventory.

Summary: This study used deep learning to directly identify sinkholes from elevation data and aerial imagery. The U-Net image segmentation model was used to locate sinkholes, and four input images of elevation data were used to train the model. The results suggest that deep learning is a viable method for automatically locating sinkholes, with the best performance achieved using DEM gradient data.

Summary: Karst springs are important drinking water sources, but the routing of contaminants like sediment in karst remains uncertain. Through data collection and modeling, we identified external sediment loading as the primary control of sediment load at springs, contrary to previous assumptions of internal resuspension.

Hydrological Functioning and Water Availability in a Himalayan Karst Basin under Climate Change

Summary: Karst springs in the Liddar catchment in northern India were studied to understand their responses to hydrometeorological factors and predict future changes. Statistical time series analysis revealed a moderate karstification and high storage capacity of the karst aquifer, with a memory effect of 43 to 61 days. The machine learning analysis showed that support vector regression outperformed random forest regression in predicting the spring flow, which was found to be more influenced by snow/ice melt than rainfall. The predictions based on climate scenarios indicated an increase in spring flow during late winter to early spring and a decrease in summer and autumn, with further reductions in flow due to increased greenhouse gas emissions.
