Summary: The study found that children and adolescents in Germany were exposed to various parabens through consumer products, with higher detection rates of methylparaben in urine samples. Higher concentrations of parabens in urine were associated with frequent usage of personal care products and cosmetics. Cumulative exposure to parabens raised concern in up to 14% of the population, mainly driven by n-propyl paraben.

Summary: The production of renewable fuels and chemicals is essential for global strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Despite the lack of economically viable process configurations, systematic studies comparing alternative refinery concepts are needed to identify the most promising designs. The use of the process graph (P-graph) methodology can effectively calculate the profitability of various biorefinery designs and aid in discovering optimum techno-economic scenarios.

Summary: In this study, a novel polysaccharide-based preservative named carboxymethyl hemicellulose p-hydroxybenzoate (P-CMHC) was synthesized by modifying hemicellulose extracted from eucalyptus waste liquor. P-CMHC showed excellent antioxidant activity, hygroscopic and moisturizing properties, and negligible cytotoxicity, suggesting its potential as a safe and healthy preservative.

Summary: In contrast to hypervalent iodine(III) compounds, little research has been done on isoelectronic bromine(III) compounds. A new method for preparing chelation-stabilized lambda(3)-bromanes was presented in this study, demonstrating their synthetic utility in oxidative reactions. The reactivity of stable bromine(III) species can be unlocked by the addition of a Lewis or a Bronsted acid, leading to the formation of C-C, C-N, and C-O bonds.

Summary: Twelve previously unknown tandem prenylated p-hydroxybenzoic acid derivatives, named oberoniamyosurusins A-L, were isolated from the plant Oberonia myosurus, along with five known derivatives. Some of the compounds exhibited moderate inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus aureus. The biosynthetic pathway of these compounds was investigated using transcriptome sequencing of O. myosurus, identifying potential enzymes involved in nervogenic acid biosynthesis.

Summary: In this study, pH-sensitive multi-targeted liposomes were developed for the co-delivery of doxorubicin and lonidamine to brain tumors. These liposomes exhibited excellent pharmacokinetic properties, crossed the blood-brain barrier, and targeted tumor cells. Once inside the cells, the liposomes were positively charged and accumulated in the mitochondria, resulting in the synergistic release of the two drugs and enhanced anti-tumor efficacy. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that these liposomes significantly inhibited tumor cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, induced apoptosis and necrosis, and interfered with mitochondrial function. They also prolonged the survival of mice with glioma, reduced tumor size, and inhibited tumor infiltration and metastasis.

Summary: A novel bioanalytical method was developed for quantitation of seven parabens in human plasma samples, and its efficiency was proven through analysis of samples collected from women undergoing breast cancer surgery and reconstructive surgery. The high plasma concentrations of certain parabens found in cancerous cases highlight the potential health risks associated with exposure to these compounds, emphasizing the need for further epidemiological research.

Summary: A simple, rapid, and sensitive method using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) has been developed to determine the total content of thymol and carvacrol in herbal spices. The method showed a wide linear response range and low detection limits, with results in good agreement with standard chromatographic methods. This electrochemical procedure is the first of its kind for these compounds in these environmental and electrode materials.

Summary: The electrochemical Kolbe C-C coupling of carboxylic acids at Pt electrodes has been studied for over 150 years. It remains relevant today due to the increasing contribution of renewable electricity to clean chemical processes and the availability of carboxylic acids as precursors for chemical synthesis. This study introduces porous BiVO4 photoelectrodes that mediate C-C Kolbe coupling with high efficiency under visible light irradiation at low voltage.

Summary: This study explored the antithrombotic activity and hematological toxicity of three compounds (PA, IVA, and 4-HA) isolated from M. tricuspidata. The results showed that these compounds could reduce the formation and degrade existing blood clots, inhibit the activities of coagulation factors, prolong coagulation time, and lower platelet function and activation levels without being toxic to blood cells.

Summary: Sample preparation and extraction play a crucial role in bioanalytical methods, particularly for the analysis of parabens in human biological samples. Parabens, commonly used as preservatives, are known for their antimicrobial activity but also their potential endocrine disrupting effects, making their determination in complex biological matrices a challenging task. Efforts in developing efficient extraction protocols coupled with liquid chromatography are essential for accurate analysis and further epidemiological and toxicological studies.
