High-value ornamental fish farming is one of the most valuable industries in the recent years, and the commercial value of ornamental fish, such as fancy carp (Cyprinus carpio) is primarily dependent on their body coloration. Therefore, a trial was conducted to investigate skin colour enhancement in fancy carp by feeding different levels (0, 25, 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg) of a dietary natural astaxanthin extracted from golden apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata) eggs, using a diet containing synthetic astaxanthin (50 mg/kg) and a control diet with no colouring added for comparison. The duration of the trial was four weeks with experimental diets containing carotenoid followed by the low carotenoid diet for other two weeks. The chromaticity of fish body skin of red and white position was assessed using the CIE L* a* b* system. Pigmentation response of skin redness (a*) of fancy carp fed with diets at 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg of natural astaxanthin supplement was higher than other treatments (P < 0.05). The lightness and yellowness (L* and b* values) indexes of carp fed with diet containing astaxanthin from golden apple snail eggs were similar compared to the other dietary treatments (P > 0.05). After two weeks of feeding diet without natural carotenoid supplement demonstrated that the group fed 50 mg/kg of natural astaxanthin still retained their redness (a*) and also had an overall tendency to improve skin colouring (L* and b*). Finally, dietary concentrations 50 mg/kg of astaxanthin extracted from golden apple snail eggs showed the highest efficiency for improving skin pigmentation in fancy carp.

Effects of in ovo feeding of vitamin E or vitamin C on egg hatchability, performance, carcass traits and immunity in broiler chickens

Farhad Ghane, Ali-Ahmad-Alaw Qotbi, Marina Slozhenkina, Aleksander Anatolievich Mosolov, Ivan Gorlov, Alireza Seidavi, Maria Antonietta Colonna, Vito Laudadio, Vincenzo Tufarelli

Summary: The effect of in ovo feeding with different levels of vitamins C and E on egg hatchability, immune response, growth, and carcass traits of broiler chickens was studied. Injections of 3 mg of vitamin C or 0.75 IU of vitamin E significantly improved hatchability, but had no effect on body weight and growth performance. The concentrations of vitamins C or E did not affect carcass traits, immune organ weight, or immune response.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of biofilm on antibiotic resistance in fish meat bacteria and assess the risk of antibiotic residues on public health. Bacterial isolates such as Escherichia coli, Aeromonas hydrophila, Shewanella putrefaciens, Vibrio spp., and Staphylococcus spp. were observed in fish samples. The results showed that some isolates were sensitive to antibiotics while others were resistant. The presence of antibiotic residues in fish samples was also detected, with estimated daily intake values established for men and women.

Aloe vera: A Sustainable Green Alternative to Exclude Antibiotics in Modern Poultry Production

Rifat Ullah Khan, Shabana Naz, Davide De Marzo, Michela M. Dimuccio, Giancarlo Bozzo, Vincenzo Tufarelli, Caterina Losacco, Marco Ragni

Summary: In the past 50 years, there has been a growing global demand for poultry meat due to increased concerns for health, ecology, safety, and equity. However, organic poultry farming, particularly the use of medicinal herbs, has gained significant attention and public demand recently, mainly due to concerns about antibiotic resistance. The ban on antibiotics in the poultry industry has led to increased interest in herbs as antibiotic alternatives. Aloe vera has been shown in various research studies to have nutritional benefits for improving poultry growth, immune status, and acting as an antibacterial and anticoccidial agent.

Enrichment of Dairy-Type Lamb Diet with Microencapsulated Omega-3 Fish Oil: Effects on Growth, Carcass Quality and Meat Fatty Acids

Davide De Marzo, Giancarlo Bozzo, Edmondo Ceci, Caterina Losacco, Michela Maria Dimuccio, Rifat Ullah Khan, Vito Laudadio, Vincenzo Tufarelli

Summary: This experiment tested the hypothesis that adding omega-3 oil to feedlot pellets improves the favorable n-3 PUFA composition in meat. The study found that supplementing microencapsulated omega-3 oil in lamb feed positively influenced body weight and feed efficiency. The addition of omega-3 oil also impacted the color and physical traits of the Longissimus lumborum (LL) muscle, as well as the fatty acid composition of the meat.

Biological Health Markers Associated with Oxidative Stress in Dairy Cows during Lactation Period

Vincenzo Tufarelli, Maria Antonietta Colonna, Caterina Losacco, Nikola Puvaca

Summary: This review aims to summarize and present different biological health markers in dairy cows during the lactation period. Biochemical and hematological factors play a significant role in determining the biological health markers of animals. Blood biochemistry is necessary to diagnose diseases in dairy animals and understand the relationship between health issues and oxidative stress in cows.

Influence of Dietary Protein Source and Level on Histological Properties of Muscle and Adipose Tissue of Lambs

Davide De Marzo, Caterina Losacco, Vito Laudadio, Vincenzo Tufarelli, Youling L. Xiong

Summary: This study evaluated the histological characteristics of muscle and adipose tissue in Gentile di Puglia breed lambs fed diets containing different protein sources (soybean meal and distillers dried grain with solubles) and protein levels. The results showed that lambs fed soybean meal had larger alpha-white fibers and smaller-diameter beta-red and alpha-red fibers. Lambs fed the lowest protein level exhibited the highest percentage of alpha-red fibers and larger alpha-white fiber diameter. The findings suggest that dietary protein strategies can modulate muscle and fiber types in lambs.

Summary: The effects of a polyherbal mixture on hepatorenal injury and dyslipidaemia in alloxan-induced diabetic rats were evaluated in this study. The results showed that the polyherbal mixture significantly improved the levels of blood glucose, body and organ weights, biochemical parameters, oxidative stress, inflammatory parameters, and histopathological examination results. Overall, this study provides novel insights into the efficacy of polyherbal mixtures in managing hyperglycaemia and its secondary complications in diabetes mellitus.

Summary: This study evaluated the anti-arthritic activity of curcumin and meloxicam co-loaded PLGA nanoparticles in adjuvant-induced arthritic rats. The results showed that the co-loaded nanoparticles significantly reduced paw swelling and arthritic score, restored body weight and immune organ index, and attenuated serum inflammatory markers and oxidative stress parameters in the arthritic rats. Furthermore, the nanoparticles modulated cytokine expressions and exhibited a greater anti-arthritic effect compared to the individual compounds.
