Summary: A series of novel biphenyl-DAPY derivatives were developed using the fragment-hopping strategy to enhance the anti-resistance efficacy of a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI). Most of the compounds exhibited improved anti-HIV-1 potency, with compound 8r showing exceptional potency against wild-type HIV-1 and mutant strains. The new DAPY analogue had lower cytotoxicity, higher selectivity index, and favorable pharmacokinetic properties, making it a potential candidate for HIV treatment.

Summary: The study showed that ADSCs are resistant to ATV, while differentiating adipocytes are significantly induced to undergo apoptosis by ATV. Internal stress-mediated UPR induced in differentiating adipocytes in the presence of ATV leads to decreased adipogenic differentiation and increased autophagy, ultimately resulting in adipogenic apoptosis.

Summary: The treatment initiation for HIV infection depends on various factors, with initial CD4 cell number being a significant correlation. However, the correlation between these factors may not reflect the correct outcome variable. In this study, we evaluated the effects of a combination of fixed factors on short-term outcome, long-term outcome, and survival, considering correlations between factors. Our results highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and treatment to positively influence long-term disease outcomes, even if the initial immune status is poor.

Summary: This case report describes an isolated collagenoma in a patient with HIV. The patient presented with a subcutaneous nodule on the occipital scalp, which was confirmed to be a collagenoma through excision and histopathology. It is unclear whether HIV or ART contributed to the development of this collagenoma.

Summary: The urgent global public health need presented by SARS-CoV-2 has brought scientists from diverse backgrounds together in an unprecedented international effort. There is a pressing need to apply clinical pharmacology principles and consider plasma and tissue protein binding to influence pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Correct interpretation of protein binding is critical for candidate selection in developing antiviral drugs for SARS-CoV-2.

Summary: This study examined the factors related to poor bone health in pediatric liver transplant recipients. The use of steroids, weight, platelets, and hemoglobin were found to be significantly associated with poor bone health. The findings highlight the importance of assessing and improving bone health in children following liver transplantation.

Summary: This study investigated the magnitude and associated factors of anxiety among clients on highly active antiretroviral therapy in public hospitals of Southern Ethiopia. The results showed that approximately one-fourth of participants living with HIV/AIDS had anxiety. Factors such as being female, widowed, medium income, comorbid conditions, and perceived stigma were significantly associated with anxiety. This finding highlights the importance of mental health assessment, early detection, and treatment of anxiety as an integral component of HIV/AIDS care.

Summary: Adipocytes play a crucial role in lipid and sugar metabolism. Genetic variations in patients with HIV may lead to different responses to antiretroviral therapy and contribute to HIV-associated lipodystrophy syndrome (HALS). This study examines the impact of genes related to lipid metabolism, drug transport, and transcription factors on metabolic complications and HALS.

Summary: This study in Nepal found a 9.9% prevalence of tuberculosis among people living with HIV, with higher risk observed among male individuals, those from the Dalit ethnic group, those at WHO stage 3 and 4 of HIV, and those with a family history of TB. Targeted interventions are needed to prevent TB among PLHIVs in Nepal, as well as integrated TB and HIV diagnosis and treatment services for co-infected individuals.

Summary: The study found that in well-treated PLWH, there was a higher incidence of de novo major ECG abnormalities, which were associated with factors such as age, underweight, smoking, diabetes, and protease inhibitor use. De novo prolonged QTc was rare and did not seem to be a major issue in well-treated PLWH.

Summary: Spirulina platensis has shown high potency in the treatment of oxidative stress, diabetes, immune disorder, inflammatory stress, and bacterial and viral-related diseases. This study found that Spirulina platensis can protect against ARV-induced oxidative stress in HepG2 cells. The activation of the antioxidant response by Spirulina platensis can mitigate the adverse drug reactions of HAART.

Summary: This study evaluates the potential uptake of antiretroviral drugs by vegetable plants from contaminated soil in South Africa. The results show that all studied vegetables have the ability to absorb the drugs and translocate them from the roots to the aerial parts of the plants. The concentration of drugs in the plants is mainly influenced by hydrophobicity and abacavir is the most accumulated drug. The study highlights the importance of assessing water quality for crop irrigation to prevent contamination of vegetables and the unintentional consumption of pollutants by humans.

Summary: This study describes the microbiological, clinical, and epidemiological characteristics of imported rickettsioses in travellers and migrants in Spain. The results show that there were 54 cases of imported rickettsioses from 2009 to 2020, with most patients being male and a median age of 37 years. The most common symptoms were febrile syndrome and cutaneous manifestations. Most diagnoses were confirmed by serology, and only a few cases required hospitalization. This study highlights the importance of considering rickettsial diseases in travellers from high-risk areas who have engaged in risky activities.

Summary: Human papillomavirus can lead to HSILs in the anogenital area, and the microbiome may play a role. HIV-MSM individuals have a high risk of anal cancer, but current screening methods for HSILs lack specificity. This study found that elevated levels of microbiome-encoded proteins were associated with HSILs, and measuring these biomarkers improved the current strategy of anal cancer screening.

Summary: We investigated the clinical outcomes of measles in people with and without HIV in Catalonia, Spain, and found that vaccination had a significant impact. People with HIV, unless immunosuppressed, were not at increased risk of severe disease or hospitalization. Summary: Hepatitis B is a major global health problem, with a large number of people carrying the virus and continuing transmission. Current treatment guidelines do not include many chronically infected patients or pregnant women, making it difficult to control the spread. Summary: The aim of this study was to describe the mortality rate of non-AIDS-defining cancer (NADC) among people living with HIV (PLWH), compare it with the general population, and assess potential risk factors. The study found that NADC is an important cause of death among PLWH, with an increased risk associated with immunodeficiency, smoking, and coinfections. This highlights the need for early detection and treatment of cancer in this population.
