Summary: High piglet mortality is a welfare challenge in organic pig production. This study investigated the litter characteristics of two hyper-prolific hybrids, DanBred and Topigs Norsvin (TN70), in an organic commercial herd. TN70 sows had more functional teats and their offspring had higher birth weights compared to DanBred. The results showed that TN70 had a higher survival rate and heavier litter weight at weaning, despite a lower number of total born piglets.

Summary: This study simulated the impact of the optimal voluntary waiting period to first service after calving on the lifetime productivity of cows in a dairy herd. It also assessed the effects of changes in the maximum number of services within a lactation, maximum number of calvings, and calf sale prices on lifetime productivity.

Summary: Bamei mutton sheep is a Chinese domestic sheep breed developed by crossing German Mutton Merino sheep and indigenous Mongolian sheep for meat production. The study identified significant variation in reproductive abilities and found that artificial selection can enhance lambing rate. Five candidate genes associated with fecundity traits were detected through genetic analysis.

Summary: By managing goats and analyzing genes, candidate genes related to prolificacy were identified. The study revealed that some genes are significantly associated with fecundity, providing reference and assistance for artificial breeding of goats.

Summary: Gilt and sow management practices are critical for the reproduction and production efficiency of a production system. In Poland, there are relatively low numbers of piglets born alive per sow per year and per sow per lifetime, which can be attributed to unsuitable parity distribution and early sow culling. Proper development and management of gilts, including factors like body weight, age at first breeding, and feed intake, can greatly impact their performance and longevity. Additionally, health-related causes such as infertility, embryonic death, and infectious pathogens contribute to early sow culling in Polish farms.

Summary: Drying piglets at birth can reduce temperature decline, especially for lighter piglets. However, combining drying with supplemental oxygen did not provide additional benefits compared to drying alone.

Summary: Piglet crushing is a leading cause of preweaning mortality, and this study explored the use of enrichment ropes to reduce this mortality. Results showed that neonatal piglets were interested in the enrichment treatments, but the treatments did not affect the frequency or duration of interactions, or litter average weight gain. However, there was an impact on piglet mortality, with milky cheese-treated piglets having the lowest mortality during the enrichment period and semiochemical-treated piglets having the lowest mortality after the ropes were removed.
