A survey of nearshore areas in the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica, using high-resolution multibeam swath bathymetry provided both a detailed digital bathymetric model and information on sediment acoustic backscatter. Combined with underwater video transects and sediment sampling, these data were used to identify and map geomorphic units. Six geomorphic units identified in the survey region include: rocky outcrops, basins, pediments, valleys, scarps and embayments. In addition to geomorphic units, the data revealed sedimentary features that provide insights into post-glacial sediment transport and erosion in the area. Ice keel pits and scours are common, and sea floor channels, scour depressions and sand ribbons indicate transport and deposition by wind-driven currents and oceanographic circulation. Gullies and sediment lobes observed on steep slopes indicate mass movement of sediment. Some of these processes have not been directly observed to date, but their effectiveness in shaping the modern sea floor is clearly indicated by the sea floor mapping data. The embayments preserve a mantle of boulder sand probably deposited by cold-based glaciers which were flanked by faster-flowing ice in adjoining regions.

Summary: In this study, the dynamics and paleo-geometry of the ice sheet in eastern Prydz Bay were explored, revealing rapid retreat of the ice sheet during deglacial events. The findings are crucial for understanding the response of the ice sheet to past and future environmental changes.

Effects of lubricant oil and diesel on macrofaunal communities in marine sediments: A five year field experiment in Antarctica*

Jonathan S. Stark

Summary: Hydrocarbons have significant impacts on marine ecosystems, particularly on the diversity and abundance of sediment macrofaunal communities. Diesel fuel has the largest initial impact on communities, but its effects diminish over time, while lubrication oils have long-lasting effects. Different types of hydrocarbon products also have different effects on the response and recovery of benthic animals.

Summary: With ongoing climate change, research into the biological changes occurring in vulnerable ecosystems, such as Antarctica, is critical. In the Totten Glacier region of Sabrina Coast, there are significant differences in the bacterial and eukaryote composition between the water column and sediments. The study provides the first assessment of DNA transfer from ocean waters to sediments and an overview of the microscopic communities occurring in the climatically important Totten Glacier region.

Contamination of the marine environment by Antarctic research stations: Monitoring marine pollution at Casey station from 1997 to 2015

Summary: This study investigated the presence of contaminants in marine sediments near Casey Station in East Antarctica and found higher concentrations of most contaminants at disturbed locations. The spatial distribution of sediment properties and contaminants displayed intricate patterns of variation. Some contaminants exceeded international guidelines for sediment quality. The study concluded that Antarctic research stations may pose a moderate level of long-term ecological risk to local marine ecosystems, and raised awareness and monitoring programs are recommended.

Summary: In this study, small remotely operated vehicles and compact underwater GoPro & REG; action cameras were used to quantify the structural complexity of under-ice benthos in coastal Antarctic surveys. The study highlighted the importance of integrating structural complexity metrics in Antarctic benthic surveys and provided insights into a unique biogenic habitat.
