Clementine is a citrus fruit that has found a peculiar habitat in specific areas of Calabria, a region located in southern Italy. Due to its peculiar characteristics it was recently awarded with protected geographical indications (PGI) from the European Union. In this work, stepwise linear discriminant analysis (S-LDA), soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA), and partial least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) were used to build chemometric models able to protect PGI Clementine from others of different origin. Accordingly, the concentration of 24-26 elements was determined in peel and juice samples, respectively, obtained from Calabrian PGI clementine and from fruits cultivated in Algeria, Tunisia, and Spain. A cross-validation procedure has shown very satisfactory values of prediction ability for both S-LDA (96.6% for juice samples and 100% for peel samples) and SIMCA (100% for both peel and juice samples). PLS-DA models also yielded satisfactory results.

Recent applications and novel strategies for mercury determination in environmental samples using microextraction-based approaches: A review

Domenico Amico, Antonella Tassone, Nicola Pirrone, Francesca Sprovieri, Attilio Naccarato

Summary: This article reviews the recent progress in the determination of environmental Hg using microextraction techniques, covering various environmental compartments such as air, water, soil, and biota. Microextraction techniques are simple, reliable, and environmentally sustainable, with great analytical potential. Future research should focus on addressing issues such as in-situ sampling, the use of natural materials, and obtaining traceable and comparable data.

Direct wine profiling by mass spectrometry (MS): A comparison of different ambient MS approaches

Lucia Bartella, Marcos Bouza, Priscilla Rocio-Bautista, Leonardo Di Donna, Juan F. Garcia-Reyes, Antonio Molina-Diaz

Summary: Ambient mass spectrometry is an alternative to classical mass spectrometry that allows fast, in-situ, and high-throughput analysis of samples with minimal sample pretreatment. This study explores the capability of different ambient ionization sources to analyze raw wine for quality control purposes. The spectra obtained from these sources showed the ability to classify and differentiate wine samples based on various compounds, including organic acids, phenolic acids, derivatives, and low-molecular-mass flavonoids. The plasma-based methods offer the advantage of solventless analysis, while the paper spray (PS) approach provides a richer MS profile.

Lipids Alterations Associated with Metformin in Healthy Subjects: An Investigation Using Mass Spectrometry Shotgun Approach

Lina A. Dahabiyeh, Muhammad Mujammami, Reem H. AlMalki, Tawfiq Arafat, Hicham Benabdelkamel, Assim A. Alfadda, Anas M. Abdel Rahman

Summary: This study used mass spectrometry-based lipid profiling to investigate the changes in lipid metabolism in the serum of healthy individuals after taking a single dose of metformin. The results showed significant alterations in lipid species involved in arachidonic acid metabolism, steroid hormone biosynthesis, and glycerophospholipid metabolism. These findings provide insights into the pleiotropic effects of metformin in various diseases.

Summary: This study investigated sensitive and specific LBMD-associated protein biomarkers in patients diagnosed with ON and OP. The results identified distinctive proteomics profiles between the control, ON, and OP groups, as well as significant dysregulation in a panel of proteins common among the three groups. A comparison of proteins showed differences in their levels between ON and the control group, as well as between ON and OP. These findings provide potential protein biomarkers for further research on bone health and OP progression.

Assessment of benzothiazoles, benzotriazoles and benzenesulfonamides in environmental waters using an optimized combination of microextraction by packed sorbent with programmed temperature vaporization-gas chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry

Rosangela Elliani, Antonio Tagarelli, Attilio Naccarato

Summary: This study proposes a new method for quantifying BTs, BTRs, and BSAs in tap water, river water, and wastewater. The method combines microextraction by packed sorbent (MEPS) and programmed temperature vaporization-gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (PTV-GC-QqQ-MS). Experimental design and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to optimize the variables affecting the performance of MEPS and PTV injection. The method achieved good linearity, accuracy, and precision, with LODs between 0.005 and 0.85 μg/L. The greenness of the procedure was assessed using Analytical Eco-Scale, GAPI, and AGREEprep metrics. The satisfactory results obtained with real water samples demonstrate the method's applicability for monitoring campaigns and exposome studies.

Triazine Herbicide and NPK Fertilizer Exposure: Accumulation of Heavy Metals and Rare Earth Elements, Effects on Cuticle Melanization, and Immunocompetence in the Model Species Tenebrio molitor

Attilio Naccarato, Maria Luigia Vommaro, Domenico Amico, Francesca Sprovieri, Nicola Pirrone, Antonio Tagarelli, Anita Giglio

Summary: The increasing use of agrochemicals has led to metal contamination of soils and waters, raising concerns about their transfer in the food chain. This study investigated the accumulation and biomagnification of various elements in beetles exposed to herbicides and fertilizers. Results showed that the fertilizer application was the main cause of rare earth elements accumulation, and toxic elements were also present in herbicide-treated beetles. The biomagnification of certain elements suggested a high potential for food web transfer in agroecosystems. Gender differences were found in element concentrations and phenotypic traits, indicating varying element uptake and excretion between males and females. The findings highlight the importance of setting limits for metals and rare earth elements in agrochemicals to protect species and maintain soil health in agroecosystems.

Seven-year monitoring of mercury in wet precipitation and atmosphere at the Amsterdam Island GMOS station

Antonella Tassone, Olivier Magand, Attilio Naccarato, Maria Martino, Domenico Amico, Francesca Sprovieri, Hippolyte Leuridan, Yann Bertrand, Michel Ramonet, Nicola Pirrone, Aurelien Dommergue

Summary: More research effort is needed to understand the biogeochemical cycle of mercury (Hg), especially in the Southern Hemisphere and Tropics where monitoring sites are lacking. Continuous monitoring of Hg concentrations worldwide is important for evaluating the effectiveness of the Minamata Convention on Mercury (MCM) actions. A study conducted at the Amsterdam Island Observatory investigated the pathways of Hg in the remote southern Indian Ocean from 2013 to 2019, revealing the contribution of oceanic evasion and long-range transport events from southern Africa.

A protocol based on solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for the monitoring of parabens and bisphenols in human saliva

Attilio Naccarato, Rosangela Elliani, Antonio Tagarelli

Summary: The present study aimed to develop a simple method for quantitatively determining parabens and bisphenols in human saliva using methyl chloroformate as a derivatizing agent, followed by SPME and GC-QqQ-MS analysis with SRM. Two derivatization strategies were compared and optimized using multivariate analysis, and it was found that the use of methyl chloroformate provided better sensitivity than the classical acetic anhydride derivatization. The performance of the derivatized analytes' sorption process was good using the overcoated fiber (PDMS/DVB/PDMS). The method showed satisfactory results in terms of linearity, limit of quantitation, accuracy, and precision for all parabens and bisphenols, making it a suitable approach for routine biomonitoring purposes.
