Chrysin (5,7-dihydroxyflavone), a natural flavonoid occurring in various plants and foods such as propolis and honey, reportedly opposes inflammation and carcinogenesis, but has rarely been applied in skin care. This study, therefore, aimed to explore the roles of chrysin in protection against UV-induced damage in HaCaT keratinocytes. Results showed that chrysin can attenuate apoptosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) expression induced by UVB and UVA. Chrysin predominantly reversed the down-regulation of aquaporin 3 (AQP-3) by UVB. It predominantly reversed JNK activation and also mildly inhibited p38 activation triggered by UVA and UVB. Animal studies revealed that chrysin's topical application demonstrated efficient percutaneous absorption and no skin irritation. Overall, results demonstrated significant benefits of chrysin on the protection of keratinocytes against UVA- and UVB-induced injuries and suggested its potential use in skin photoprotection.

Kaempferol 3-Rhamnoside on Glutamate Release from Rat Cerebrocortical Nerve Terminals Involves P/Q-Type Ca2+ Channel and Ca2+/Calmodulin-Dependent Protein Kinase II-Dependent Pathway Suppression

Tzu-Kang Lin, Chi-Feng Hung, Jing-Ru Weng, Ting-Yang Hsieh, Su-Jane Wang

Summary: This study found that Kaempferol 3-rhamnoside (KR) can inhibit 4-aminopyridine (4-AP)-evoked glutamate release. The inhibitory effect of KR is linked to the omission of external Ca2+ or the depletion of glutamate in synaptic vesicles, as well as the suppression of P/Q-type Ca2+ channel activity. Additionally, KR reduces the increase in Ca2+ concentration and the phosphorylation of CaMKII and its substrate synapsin I.

Translational Medicine in Uremic Vascular Calcification: Scavenging ROS Attenuates p-Cresyl Sulfate-Activated Caspase-1, NLRP3 Inflammasome and Eicosanoid Inflammation in Human Arterial Smooth Muscle Cells

Jia-Feng Chang, Hsiao-Ling Kuo, Shih-Hao Liu, Chih-Yu Hsieh, Chih-Ping Hsu, Kuo-Chin Hung, Ting-Ming Wang, Chang-Chin Wu, Kuo-Cheng Lu, Wei-Ning Lin, Chi-Feng Hung, Wen-Chin Ko

Summary: Uremic vascular calcification (UVC) is closely related to oxidative injury, cell death, and osteocytic conversion. Scavenging ROS may attenuate inflammasome activation and eicosanoid inflammation in the UVC process. Therefore, reducing ROS and PCS could be an effective therapeutic strategy for UVC-related cardiovascular events.

Simvastatin Attenuated Tumor Growth in Different Pancreatic Tumor Animal Models

Chao-Yi Chen, Yi-Feng Yang, Paul C. Wang, Liang Shan, Stephen Lin, Po-Jung Chen, Yi-Jung Chen, Han-Sun Chiang, Jaw-Town Lin, Chi-Feng Hung, Yao-Jen Liang

Summary: This study confirmed the relationship between simvastatin and pancreatic cancer by using different cell lines and animal models. Simvastatin significantly decreased the viability of pancreatic cancer cells and may arrest the cell cycle. In animal models, pre-treated pancreatic cancer cells with simvastatin showed slower tumor growth and decreased tumor/body weight ratio. Additionally, pancreatic cancer cells presented different growth patterns in different animal-induced models.

Summary: Patients with high-risk and very high-risk prostate cancer who undergo prostatectomy have a high risk of biochemical recurrence (BCR). This retrospective observational study aimed to identify the risk factors for BCR after radical prostatectomy in these patients. The study found that patients in the very high-risk group had a lower BCR-free survival rate and even if their PSA levels were undetectable initially after surgery, they still had a high risk of BCR. Preoperative MRI imaging stage and PSA density were found to be predictors of short-term BCR after prostatectomy.
