Summary: This study reports monitoring data of 12 ergot alkaloids in cereal and cereal-derived products collected in Italy from 2017 to 2020. An LC-MS/MS method was used for analysis, with verified analytical performance and validity of generated data. Results showed that most samples contained low levels of ergot alkaloids, but some samples also exhibited high contamination levels.

Summary: Ramulus Mori (Sangzhi) alkaloids (SZ-A) derived from mulberry twigs have been approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. SZ-A not only has hypoglycemic effects, but also protects pancreatic B-cell function and alleviates hepatic steatosis. Pharmacokinetic studies showed that SZ-A is rapidly absorbed, exhibits dose-linear pharmacokinetics, and is widely distributed in glycolipid metabolism-related tissues.

Summary: Ergot alkaloids are mycotoxins primarily produced by the fungus Claviceps purpurea, affecting the nervous system and acting as vasoconstrictors. Recent advances in the detection of 11 major ergot alkaloids in swine and dairy feeds were presented, with a validated method using UHPLC-MS/MS for analysis. The study found high contamination rates of ergot alkaloids in swine feed samples, while dairy feed samples also showed positive contamination levels, meeting EU regulations.

Summary: People who chew betel nuts and smoke have a much higher probability of developing oral cancer. This study developed a high-throughput method using MAE and LC-MS/MS to measure biomarkers of betel nuts and cigarettes in hair samples. The method showed good accuracy and precision and was successfully applied in the analysis of the samples. The results indicate lower concentrations of the substances in gray hair.

Summary: Liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) is an important analytical technique in clinical diagnostics. A compact LC-MS instrument was developed, consisting of an assembled liquid chromatograph and a miniature ion trap mass spectrometer. The use of LC improved the mixture analysis capability and detection sensitivity of the miniature mass spectrometer. This compact LC-MS instrument shows potential for clinical diagnosis.

Summary: A novel LC-MS/MS method was developed to quantify indole concentrations in mouse plasma and tissues, which could serve as a biomarker for several diseases. This method separated and measured the ion state of indole and an internal standard, allowing for accurate determination of indole concentrations range in different samples. This study contributes to the understanding of the role of indole as a biomarker and its implications in various disease states.
