Summary: Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) contamination is common and harmful in aquatic environments. This study investigates the response mechanisms of Chlorella pyrenoidosa to PBDE exposure, finding that photosynthetic damage and inhibition were caused by the binding of BDE47 to PSII and PSI complexes. However, C. pyrenoidosa showed a positive resistance and metabolic ability to PBDEs, indicating its potential as a bioremediator for wastewater-borne PBDEs.

Summary: The study identified a bacterial strain, Sphingomonas wittichii BP14P, in WWTP sludge with the capability to completely degrade BP3 in 7 days on a growth dependent manner. Strain BP14P utilized BP3 as the sole energy and carbon source, showing specificity in degrading BP3 compared to other UV filters. Further research is needed to understand the factors contributing to this specificity and to assess the long-term environmental impact of BP3.

Summary: Co-culturing fungi with other microorganisms enhances the production of secondary metabolites. In this study, the activation of specific gene expressions in the co-culture system of two fungal species resulted in the production of different compounds compared to previous co-culture studies with bacteria. The molecular genetic mechanisms behind the biosynthesis of these compounds were demonstrated.

Summary: A manganese doped metal-organic framework composite (MnDUT-52) was synthesized and applied for the dispersive solid phase extraction of trace diphenyl ether herbicides (Des) in water samples. The doped material showed enhanced surface area and zeta potential compared to its precursor. The optimized extraction conditions resulted in good reusability of MnDUT-52 and the developed HPLC-UV method exhibited wide linear range, low detection limits, and high extraction recovery for Des.

Summary: Cytochrome P450s (P450s) play a key role in herbicide metabolism research, providing selectivity in crops and resistance in weeds. While diverse plant P450s with herbicide-metabolizing functions have been identified, fully exploring their potential in crop improvement and herbicide resistance mitigation remains challenging due to the complexity of their function and regulation. Comparing substrate specificity and protein structures of P450s may lead to the development of selective herbicides and crops with higher herbicide tolerance.

Summary: PBDEs are persistent environmental pollutants used as flame retardants. Exposure to PBDEQ leads to atherosclerosis progression by inducing lipid accumulation and activating NLRP3 inflammasome and pyroptosis. CD36 plays a crucial role in the cardiovascular toxicity of PBDEs.

Summary: Amaranthus tuberculatus, a waterhemp plant species resistant to 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), has been found to possess rapid metabolic detoxification ability. Through a novel detoxification mechanism, resistant plants hydroxylate 2,4-D into a less toxic metabolite, while susceptible plants conjugate 2,4-D to aspartate. This evolution of detoxification reactions in resistant plants allows for more efficient detoxification of 2,4-D.

Summary: Sphingomonas wittichii RW1 is able to grow on dibenzofuran (DBF) and dibenzo-p-dioxin (DXN) as the sole carbon source. Two upper pathway meta cleavage product hydrolases (DxnB1 and DxnB2) were identified to be active on DBF, while a third constitutively expressed hydrolase encoded by SWIT0910 gene was found to be involved in DXN degradation.

Summary: This study focused on the thermal treatment of PBDE-contaminated soil, with the optimal conditions determined to be heating at 450 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes with a heating rate of 10 degrees Celsius per minute. Through this method, BDE-209 was successfully removed from the soil to below detection limits, indicating the feasibility of remediating PBDE-contaminated soil through thermal treatment.
