Backgrounds: To determine the association between the brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) Val66Met polymorphism and short-term antidepressant response in Taiwanese patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Methods: We recruited 117 MDD patients who were randomized to fluoxetine or venlafaxine treatment and 106 controls. The association between genotypes and percentage changes in the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D) scores over time was analyzed by repeated-measures ANOVA. The antidepressants were included in the model as covariates. Results: The frequency of the BDNF Val66Met polymorphisms was not significantly different between patient and control groups. Significantly changes in HAM-D scores were noted after 2 and 4 weeks of venlafaxine treatment among different genotypes. Conclusions: Results suggest antidepressants acting through different mechanisms may affect the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism differently. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Peripheral inflammation is associated with dysfunctional corticostriatal circuitry and executive dysfunction in bipolar disorder patients

Huai-Hsuan Tseng, Hui Hua Chang, Shyh-Yuh Wei, Tsung-Hua Lu, Yi-Ting Hsieh, Yen Kuang Yang, Po See Chen

Summary: Patients with bipolar disorder may be particularly sensitive to the effects of peripheral inflammation on corticostriatal connectivity, which may affect cognitive and reward-related corticostriatal circuitry, contributing to cognitive-affective dysregulation in the euthymic state. Therefore, anti-inflammatory or other circuit-specific treatments are warranted for individualized treatment in bipolar disorder.

The social cognitive ability in Han Chinese euthymic patients with bipolar I and bipolar II disorder

Yu Chia Liu, Huai-Hsuan Tseng, Yun-Hsuan Chang, Hui Hua Chang, Yen Kuang Yang, Po See Chen

Summary: Han Chinese euthymic patients with bipolar disorder exhibit significant social cognitive deficits in understanding emotions and cognitive dysfunction in attention and executive function. However, there were no significant differences in social cognition and general cognitive ability between BD I and BD II patients. Social cognitive rehabilitation should be considered for both BD I and BD II patients.

Childhood neglect is associated with corticostriatal circuit dysfunction in bipolar disorder adults

Summary: The study found a negative correlation between physical neglect in childhood and the functional connectivity between the left caudate and the frontoparietal network in BD patients, as well as a negative correlation with WCST performance. However, the functional connections between the left caudate and the frontoparietal network were positively correlated with WCST performance. Further investigation is needed to understand the specific impacts of physical neglect on brain connectivity and executive function in the BD population.

Summary: Vaginal administration of rhFSH may offer an alternative treatment for women undergoing IVF, showing no significant differences in oocyte retrieval, uterine thickness, and blood flow compared to abdominal administration. Furthermore, pharmacokinetic studies revealed lower clearance and prolonged elimination half-life of rhFSH in women receiving vaginally, while animal studies demonstrated increased follicles and progesterone levels in rats treated with intermittent vaginal injections.

Summary: Intradermal administration of recombinant human FSH (rhFSH) for IVF treatment achieves similar outcomes in terms of the number of mature oocytes and clinical pregnancy rate compared to conventional daily subcutaneous rhFSH administration. With fewer injections and a smaller dose, this method provides a cost-effective and patient-friendly regimen.

Associations of emotion recognition, loneliness, and social functioning in euthymic patients with bipolar disorder

Chia Ning Lee, Yu-Lien Huang, Hui Hua Chang, Che Yu Kuo, Tsung-Hua Lu, Yi-Ting Hsieh, Wei Hung Chang, Yen Kuang Yang, Po See Chen, Huai-Hsuan Tseng

Summary: Emotion recognition and loneliness are related to impaired social functioning in patients with bipolar disorder. Euthymic bipolar disorder patients show lower emotion recognition accuracy, higher loneliness, and poorer social functioning. Loneliness has a global impact on social functioning, while emotion recognition may specifically affect certain subdomains of social functioning in euthymic bipolar disorder.
