Summary: Recent studies have shown that microglial dysfunction plays an important role in the pathogenesis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In a pharmacological mouse model, the density and mobility of microglia were found to be decreased, and the expression of cytokines and chemokines was also reduced. Importantly, administration of BDNF or induction of BDNF expression reversed microglial dysfunction and reduced stereotypic behavior.

Summary: Obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) commonly occur in patients treated with clozapine and can significantly affect subjective wellbeing. This study found that OCS severity had a negative impact on wellbeing scores, independent of depressive and psychotic symptoms. However, OCS did not impair general functioning. Obsessional thinking and hoarding behavior, rather than compulsions, were specifically associated with decreased wellbeing, possibly due to the nature of the compulsions.

Summary: This review synthesized evidence on the experiences of maternity care and mental health care for women with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) during pregnancy and postpartum. The findings revealed three descriptive themes: experiences of barriers to treatment and care, experiences of treatment/care decision making, and experiences of treatment and care. Three analytic themes were also identified, which demonstrated tensions in balancing the health and safety of the baby and the mother, as well as the perception of a normal perinatal experience. The review highlighted significant gaps in the literature, particularly regarding maternity and pharmacological care experiences. Balancing these tensions is crucial to ensure that women with OCD receive the necessary care.

Summary: Recent research emphasizes the importance of a dimensional perspective on mental disorders, particularly the conceptualization of an obsessive-compulsive spectrum. The current study aims to evaluate the psychometric characteristics of the Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum-Short Version (OBS-SV) questionnaire. The results demonstrate strong reliability and validity of the OBS-SV, showing significant correlations with other measures of obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

Summary: Tourettic OCD (TOCD) is a unique condition with overlapping symptoms of OCD and CTD. It is characterized by complex tic-like behaviors with compulsive and anxious features. TOCD is an intermediate neuropsychiatric disorder distinct from TS or OCD alone. The treatment of TOCD is complex and often resistant to treatment, requiring a combination of pharmacology and behavioral therapy.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the change in obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCSs) from before to during the COVID-19 pandemic within the Swiss general population, and to examine the possible relationship of OCSs to stress and anxiety. The results showed that OCSs significantly increased during the pandemic, particularly in the washing dimension. Self-reported stress and anxiety were weakly associated with the severity of OCSs. The study suggests that all individuals with OCSs should be considered as risk groups for symptom deterioration during a pandemic and when assessing its possible long-term effects.

Summary: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a difficult-to-treat disorder with diverse symptoms. This study focuses on object relations theory to understand OCD symptoms, particularly the concept of the obsessive position. The study distinguishes between the obsessive ego-state and the realistic ego-state, proposing OCD as a disorder of personality and ego organization. The application of a modified psychoanalytic methodology is advocated, with a glimpse into a psychoanalytic therapy session with an OCD patient.

Methods:This study used network analysis to construct networks of cognitive variables and OCD-related symptoms in patients with OCD and healthy controls. Results:The study highlighted the important role of variables such as obsession and IQ from a network perspective. Conclusions: These results deepen our understanding of the multivariate relationship between cognitive dysfunction and OCD symptoms and may promote the prediction and diagnosis of OCD.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics of language difficulties and their relation with other cognitive domains in patients with a first episode of psychosis. The results show that patients with psychosis have language production deficits at both micro- and macro-linguistic levels, and these deficits are not related to other cognitive domains. Machine learning methods using language features are able to classify participants as patients or healthy controls with high accuracy.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the efficacy of esketamine in treating unipolar and bipolar treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and provide preliminary evidence of its effectiveness in bipolar TRD (B-TRD). The results showed that esketamine significantly reduced depressive symptoms in B-TRD patients compared to TRD patients, and it had a better anxiolytic action in B-TRD patients. The low risk of side effects confirmed the safety of this treatment.

Summary: This study examined the efficacy moderators of combining short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (STPP) with antidepressants for adults with depression. The results showed that adding STPP to antidepressants was more effective for patients with high baseline depression levels and longer depressive episode duration. These findings suggest that depression severity and episode duration should be considered when selecting treatment options for depression.

Summary: This review explores the role of neuropsychological tests in the diagnostic assessment of adult ADHD, specifically their ability to differentiate individuals with ADHD from those with other psychiatric conditions. The results indicate that among the objective measures analyzed, only Continuous Performance Tests, when combined with clinical interview instruments, were able to reliably distinguish individuals with ADHD from other psychiatric patients. Other objective tests showed mixed and inconsistent results. These findings highlight the need for further research to develop objective measures tailored to the core symptoms of ADHD, in order to improve the tests' diagnostic ability and assist clinicians in accurately distinguishing between ADHD and other psychiatric disorders.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to investigate the risk factors and temporal span for mortality in suicide attempters. The study found that the highest mortality occurred within the first 12 months after the attempt and remained elevated for many years afterwards. Male gender, older age, high deprivation index, single-parent family, mood disorders, malignant neoplasms, diabetes mellitus, and intracranial injuries were identified as independent predictors of death. The findings highlight the need to design strategies for long-term assistance and care to reduce unfavorable outcomes.

Summary: This review aims to gather available evidence from mechanistic studies to strengthen the pharmacological basis for repurposing statins in depression. The selected studies described several mechanisms potentially contributing to the effects of statins on mood, including serotonergic neurotransmission, neurogenesis, neuroplasticity, hypothalamic-pituitary axis regulation, and inflammation modulation. However, the association between statins, lipid metabolism, and worsening of depressive symptoms remains controversial.

Summary: International guidelines recommend long-term antipsychotic therapy for schizophrenia, but medication compliance remains a critical issue. Paliperidone palmitate is an approved second-generation antipsychotic long-acting injectable for schizophrenia treatment. This systematic review aimed to evaluate PP-LAI adherence levels and healthcare resource utilization and costs. The findings suggest that paliperidone palmitate is a good treatment strategy for schizophrenia patients, with better adherence patterns and more favorable healthcare resource utilization and costs compared to oral antipsychotics.
