Purpose: To examine the relationship between country-level age norms for sexual initiation timing and early sexual initiation (ESI) among adolescent boys and girls. Methods: Nationally representative data from 17 countries that participated in the 2006/2007 European Social Survey (ESS-3, n = 33,092) and the 2005/2006 Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children Study (HBSC, n = 27,702) were analyzed. Age norms were measured as the average country-level response to an item asking the age at which ESS respondents believed someone is too young to have sexual intercourse. HBSC respondents (aged 14-16 years) self-reported age at sexual initiation, which we defined as early (<15 years) or not early (>= 15 years or no initiation). Control variables included age, family affluence, perceived socioeconomic status, family living arrangement, substance use, school attachment, and country-level legal age of consent. Multivariable three-level logistic models with random intercepts were run separately by sex. Results: In multivariable analyses, higher overall age norms were associated with reduced likelihood of ESI among girls (AOR .60, 95% CI .45-.79); associations with ESI were stronger for parent cohort (ages 31-65 years) norms (AOR .37, 95% CI .23-.58) than for peer cohort (ages 15-20 years) norms (AOR .60, 95% CI .49-.74). For boys, overall norms were also significantly negatively associated with ESI (AOR .68, 95% CI .46-.99), as were parent cohort norms (AOR .66, 95% CI .45-.96). Peer cohort norms were not significantly related to boys' ESI. Conclusion: Macrolevel cultural norms may impact adolescents' sexual initiation timing. Research exploring the sexual health outcomes of early initiators in countries with contrasting age norms is warranted. (C) 2014 Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine. All rights reserved.

Patterns and correlates of substance use among young adult African American women

Aubrey Spriggs Madkour, Gretchen Clum, Jakevia Green, Jen Latimer, Norine Schmidt, Carolyn Johnson, Patricia Kissinger

Summary: This study examined the patterns and correlates of substance use among urban African American young women. The results suggest that sexual relationships and history of abuse/coercion are important factors in these women's substance use.

Summary: The study indicates a strong association between cockroach exposure and asthma morbidity, especially in high-stress environments. The combination of these two factors may be modifiable factors contributing to poor asthma outcomes.

Social Media Use and Adolescents' Sleep: A Longitudinal Study on the Protective Role of Parental Rules Regarding Internet Use before Sleep

Regina J. J. M. van den Eijnden, Suzanne M. Geurts, Tom F. M. ter Bogt, Vincent G. van der Rijst, Ina M. Koning

Summary: The study found that strict parental rules about Internet and smartphone use before sleep can prevent negative effects of social media on sleep quality, but only for adolescents who are less engaged in social media. For highly engaged social media users, strict rules do not seem to be as effective.

Pornography Use Profiles and the Emergence of Sexual Behaviors in Adolescence

Davide Pirrone, Marielle Zondervan-Zwijnenburg, Ellen Reitz, Regina J. J. M. van den Eijnden, Tom F. M. ter Bogt

Summary: This research longitudinally investigated adolescent pornography consumption and its association with sexual development in early and middle adolescence. The study found that compared to their low pornography peers, both boys and girls in the high pornography group showed accelerated development of sexual activities such as masturbation, petting, and receiving manual sex. Girls in the high pornography group were also more inclined to receive oral sex, while boys in the high pornography group showed earlier and more frequent manual sex and intercourse.

An Indirect Measure of Implicit Sexual Assertiveness: Reliability and Validity of the Sexual Assertiveness IAT in Young Adults in The Netherlands

Jacques van Lankveld, Regina van den Eijnden, Peggy Emmerink, Tom Ter Bogt, Ron Pat-El, Ine Vanwesenbeeck

Summary: In this study, the reliability and validity of an Implicit Association Test (the SA-IAT) measuring sexual assertiveness were examined in a sample of young adults. The results showed acceptable internal consistency and low correlations with explicit sexual assertiveness. Furthermore, implicit sexual assertiveness did not share variance with personality traits except for extraversion in the full sample and female subsample.

An Implicit Measure of Sexual Double Standard Endorsement in Emerging Adults: Reliability and Validity Aspects

Jacques J. D. M. van Lankveld, Peggy M. J. Emmerink, Regina J. J. M. van den Eijnden, Tom F. M. ter Bogt, Ron J. Pat-El, Ine Vanwesenbeeck

Summary: The study investigated the psychometric characteristics of an Implicit Association Test, showing acceptable internal consistency and modest levels of explicit and implicit SDS endorsement in both male and female participants. Convergent validity was low in multitrait-multimethod analysis with explicit SDS endorsement and gender investment in males, while divergent validity analysis showed absence of significant correlations with unrelated personality traits except for extraversion in female participants. Further research is needed to explore the differences in explicit and implicit SDS endorsements between young male and female participants.

Romantic love and involvement in bullying and cyberbullying in 15-year-old adolescents from eight European countries and regions

Alina Cosma, Andras Kolto, Honor Young, Einar Thorsteinsson, Emmanuelle Godeau, Elizabeth Saewyc, Saoirse Nic Gabhainn

Summary: Sexual minority youth are more likely to experience bullying victimization, particularly in the context of cyberbullying, compared to their heterosexual peers. The stigma associated with being a sexual minority may contribute to their increased risk of bullying involvement. Interventions targeting bullying and associated health risks in sexual minority youth are necessary, with explicit school policies and locally tailored interventions showing particular effectiveness.
