We previously reported an association between dyslipidemia and endometrial cancers. Osteoporosis is also reported to relate with some cancers. A common etiologic event has been proposed between dyslipidemia and osteoporosis. However, the pattern of interrelationships among dyslipidemia, osteoporosis and endometrial cancer is not well understood. To improve the quality of life of endometrial cancer survivors, these relationships should be determined. This study included 179 Japanese menopausal women who underwent bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, including 114 women with incident endometrial cancer and 65 without endometrial cancer. The women were categorized according to dyslipidemia status. Bone mineral density was measured and compared between groups. Osteoporosis was statistically more frequent in women with hypertriglyceridemia who did not have endometrial cancer. In contrast, osteoporosis was statistically less frequent in women with hypertriglyceridemia who had endometrial cancer. In this cross-sectional study in a Japanese population, osteoporosis was associated with hypertriglyceridemia in post-menopausal women without endometrial cancer, but was less frequent in endometrial cancer survivors with hypertriglyceridemia.

A retrospective study for investigating the outcomes of endometrial cancer treated with radiotherapy

Kensuke Sakai, Wataru Yamagami, Hiroko Machida, Yasuhiko Ebina, Yoichi Kobayashi, Tsutomu Tabata, Masanori Kaneuchi, Satoru Nagase, Takayuki Enomoto, Daisuke Aoki, Mikio Mikami

Summary: Patients with endometrial cancer who received radiotherapy had a significantly poorer prognosis compared to those who underwent surgery, with age, advanced stage, histological type, lymphadenectomy, and adjuvant radiotherapy being independent prognostic factors. Significant differences in survival rates were observed among patients receiving adjuvant therapy, chemotherapy, and no adjuvant therapy for stage I or II, and adjuvant chemotherapy showed significant differences compared to no adjuvant therapy and adjuvant radiotherapy for stage III or IV patients.

Clinical Usefulness of Endometrial Cytology in Determining the Therapeutic Effect of Fertility Preserving Therapy

Takuma Yoshimura, Wataru Yamagami, Mio Takahashi, Takuro Hirano, Kensuke Sakai, Takeshi Makabe, Tatsuyuki Chiyoda, Kouji Banno, Daisuke Aoki

Summary: This study evaluated the clinical utility of endometrial cytology during MPA therapy and found that the sensitivity of cytology in determining therapeutic efficacy is low, and it is not acceptable to omit D&C. The addition of cytological evaluation to D&C during MPA therapy was found to have low clinical significance.

Comparison of treatment outcomes of surgery and radiotherapy, including concurrent chemoradiotherapy for stage Ib2-IIb cervical adenocarcinoma patients: a retrospective study

Eiji Kondo, Kenta Yoshida, Tsutomu Tabata, Yoichi Kobayashi, Wataru Yamagami, Yasuhiko Ebina, Masanori Kaneuchi, Satoru Nagase, Hiroko Machida, Mikio Mikami

Summary: This study compared the treatment outcomes of surgery and radiotherapy in Japanese patients with stage Ib2-IIb cervical adenocarcinoma. The results showed that age, treatment type, and tumor stage were independent prognostic factors for 5-year overall survival. Surgery may be considered for younger patients with stage IIb adenocarcinoma.

Impact of COVID-19 on gynecologic cancer treatment in Japan: a nationwide survey by the Japan Society of Gynecologic Oncology (JSGO)

Yuya Nogami, Hiroaki Komatsu, Takeshi Makabe, Yuri Hasegawa, Yoshihito Yokoyama, Kei Kawana, Aikou Okamoto, Mikio Mikami, Hidetaka Katabuchi

Summary: This study conducted a nationwide survey to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on gynecologic oncology treatment in Japan. The results showed a decrease in outpatient visits due to patient reluctance, but no significant decrease in surgeries. There was also no increase in the rate of advanced stage cancers, but a significant proportion of participants perceived an impact on management and prognosis.

Summary: The study found that the impact of nodal metastasis on survival and the efficacy of postoperative treatments vary according to histological subtypes, with the non-squamous cell carcinoma tumors showing a greater impact on survival rates.

Aurora kinase blockade drives de novo addiction of cervical squamous cell carcinoma to druggable EGFR signalling

Masayuki Komatsu, Kanako Nakamura, Takashi Takeda, Fumiko Chiwaki, Kouji Banno, Daisuke Aoki, Fumitaka Takeshita, Hiroki Sasaki

Summary: This study proposes a new concept of inducing addiction to oncogenic signaling through specific blockade of target molecules. In experiments with cervical squamous cell carcinoma cells, dual blockade of Aurora A/B led to rapid addiction to EGFR-Erk signaling, and the synergistic inhibition of this signaling enhanced anti-cancer activities in vitro, in vivo, and in a patient-derived organoid model.

Evaluation of the role of intraoperative frozen section and magnetic resonance imaging in endometrial cancer

Reina Ooka, Yoshiko Nanki, Wataru Yamagami, Miho Kawaida, Shimpei Nagai, Takuro Hirano, Kensuke Sakai, Takeshi Makabe, Tatsuyuki Chiyoda, Yusuke Kobayashi, Fumio Kataoka, Daisuke Aoki

Summary: This study compares the accuracy of preoperative endometrial biopsy and MRI with intraoperative frozen section in diagnosing endometrial cancer. The results show that there is no significant difference between preoperative and intraoperative diagnoses for histologic type and grade, but intraoperative diagnosis is more accurate in determining myometrial invasion.

Summary: This study reviewed the clinicopathological characteristics of small cell neuroendocrine cervical cancer (SCNEC) and identified the optimal treatment. The rates of lymph-node and distant metastasis were significantly higher in T1b2 cases than T1b1 cases. For IB2 and T1bN1M0 SCNEC, the 5-year survival rate with surgery followed by chemotherapy was significantly higher than that with surgery followed by radiation therapy/concurrent chemoradiation therapy.

Summary: The objective of this study was to examine the current trends in fertility-sparing treatment for young patients with atypical endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial cancer in Japan. A nationwide, retrospective survey was conducted, and data from 413 patients were collected. The study found that the most common treatments used were medroxyprogesterone alone or in combination with metformin, and the success rate of initial treatment was 78.2%. Factors such as histology, body mass index, treatment period, time to complete remission, maintenance therapy, and pregnancy had an impact on recurrence risk and pregnancy outcomes.
