Summary: In this study, NbN coatings were deposited using multi-arc ion plating at different nitrogen partial pressures, and the effects of phase composition, microstructure, and surface morphology on the anti-corrosion behavior and conductivity were investigated. The results showed that the coating deposited at a relatively high nitrogen partial pressure exhibited the best corrosion resistance and conductivity.

Summary: A quantitative model is proposed in this study to characterize the pressure distribution on bipolar plates. A theoretical model is established based on finite element modeling (FEM) and measurement, and flexible pressure sensors are used for testing. Furthermore, a nacre-inspired optimization approach is applied to improve the uneven pressure distributions. Results show that the optimized design can significantly improve the uneven clamping load and provide an effective approach for designing durable PEMFC stacks.

Summary: Composite bipolar plates (CBPs) are promising materials for PEMFC with mechanical strength, electrical conductivity and chemical stability. This study introduces epoxy (EP) into phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin as adhesive for CBP, resulting in PF-EP-CBP with enhanced flexibility. The obtained PF-EP-CBP exhibits significantly improved flexural strength and meets the 2025 DOE targets. This study provides a novel insight and convenient method for adhesive tailoring, which is significant for the practical development of CBPs in PEMFC fields.

Summary: This study establishes a hydroforming model to investigate the quality control mechanism of bipolar plate hydroforming. The results demonstrate that increasing the pressure in the hydroforming process improves the formability and filling rate of bipolar plates, but can also lead to partial fractures. Moreover, the forming effect of the die's outer radius is better than that of the inner radius, while the draft angle has minimal impact on formability.

Summary: In this study, the ultra-thin bipolar plates were formed using 0.1 mm stainless steel sheet. With reasonable flow field design and material selection, the mass of single bipolar plate is as low as 44.6 g and thickness is only 1.9 mm with 180 cm2 active area. The 2.8 kW air-cooled stack has efficient heat dissipation, small voltage over/undershoot, rapid temperature dynamic response, and compact structure, moreover, the mass of stack core is 3203 g and volume of stack is 3.36 L. The designed stack has excellent voltage consistency, fast temperature response, and high power density.

Summary: Insufficient corrosion resistance and conductivity hinder the wide application of stainless steel bipolar plates. This study explores the use of CrN monolayer and multilayer films to improve the performance of SS304 bipolar plates. The effect of pulse width on the film structure and composition was characterized, and the best performance was achieved with a single long pulse of 40 ms.

Summary: Aluminum AA5052 is an inexpensive and lightweight metal. The use of green organic solvent chitosan can effectively reduce its corrosion. The best corrosion inhibition effect is achieved at a chitosan concentration of 0.5% wt and EPD time of 20 minutes. SEM-EDX analysis reveals that the metal surface becomes smoother and the corrosion rate decreases after being coated with chitosan.

Summary: In order to achieve higher power density in fuel cell operation, researchers have explored various approaches, such as the innovative design of bipolar plates (BPP). The introduction of new flow field designs, structures, and flow patterns have been found to improve mass transfer capacity and enhance fuel cell performance. This article offers a comprehensive summary of these approaches and provides guidance on future BPP development. It also examines the impact of different flow field structures and geometric parameters on distribution uniformity and interfacial contact resistance. Additionally, the article reviews the main manufacturing processes of BPPs and identifies challenges that must be overcome to produce higher performance plates.
