Vitamin B-6 intake is related to physical performance in European older adults: results of the New Dietary Strategies Addressing the Specific Needs of the Elderly Population for Healthy Aging in Europe (NU-AGE) study

Pol Grootswagers, Marco Mensink, Agnes A. M. Berendsen, Carolien P. J. Deen, Ido P. Kema, Stephan J. L. Bakker, Aurelia Santoro, Claudio Franceschi, Nathalie Meunier, Corinne Malpuech-Brugere, Agata Bialecka-Debek, Katarzyna Rolf, Susan Fairweather-Tait, Amy Jennings, Edith J. M. Feskens, Lisette C. P. G. M. de Groot

Summary: The study found that vitamin B-6 intake is associated with better chair rise test time and greater handgrip strength in older healthy adults with low physical activity levels.

Are Pregnant Women Who Are Living with Overweight or Obesity at Greater Risk of Developing Iron Deficiency/Anaemia?

Anna A. Wawer, Nicolette A. Hodyl, Susan Fairweather-Tait, Bernd Froessler

Summary: Low-grade inflammation often present in individuals with obesity can affect iron uptake and metabolism, increasing the risk of iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anemia. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to these risks. Therefore, closer monitoring of iron status and weight gain is recommended for pregnant women living with obesity.

Sodium and Potassium Content of Foods Consumed in an Italian Population and the Impact of Adherence to a Mediterranean Diet on Their Intake

Marcella Malavolti, Androniki Naska, Susan J. Fairweather-Tait, Carlotta Malagoli, Luciano Vescovi, Cristina Marchesi, Marco Vinceti, Tommaso Filippini

Summary: High sodium and low potassium intake are associated with increased blood pressure and cardiovascular disease risk. Adherence to a Mediterranean diet can lead to higher potassium intake but has limited effect on reducing sodium intake. In a Northern Italy community, average sodium intake exceeded recommendations while potassium intake was slightly below the recommended levels.

Medical Research Council Hot Topic workshop report: Planning a UK Nutrition and Healthy Life Expectancy Trial

Jennifer Carter, John Mathers, Susan Fairweather-Tait, Susan Jebb, Naveed Sattar, Amy Jennings, Anne-Marie Minihane

Summary: In the UK, interdisciplinary collaborations are being utilized to improve eating behavior and benefit population health through novel nutritional research. The ultimate goal is to plan a nationwide nutrition primary prevention randomized controlled trial to address inequalities, reduce the risk of prevalent diet-related chronic diseases, and increase healthy life expectancy.

Zinc and selenium supplementation in COVID-19 prevention and treatment: a systematic review of the experimental studies

Erica Balboni, Federico Zagnoli, Tommaso Filippini, Susan J. Fairweather-Tait, Marco Vinceti

Summary: The study found that there is currently insufficient evidence to support the effectiveness of zinc or selenium supplementation for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19. The existing studies have inconsistent results, and there is limited research on selenium supplementation. Further randomized controlled trials are needed to obtain more accurate conclusions.

Critical Role of Maternal Selenium Nutrition in Neurodevelopment: Effects on Offspring Behavior and Neuroinflammatory Profile

Summary: Research shows that sufficient selenium intake is important for brain and cognitive development during pregnancy and early life. A sub-optimal selenium diet may have negative effects on brain development and behavior, while a deficient selenium diet may lead to reduced antioxidant activity.

Selenium status and immunity

Susan J. Fairweather-Tait, Tommaso Filippini, Marco Vinceti

Summary: This review examines the relationship between selenium and immune function in humans. Through the analysis of nine randomized controlled trials, it was found that selenium intake and form have a certain impact on T cells and natural killer cells, but have little effect on humoral immunity.

Selenium and immune function: a systematic review and meta-analysis of experimental human studies

Tommaso Filippini, Susan Fairweather-Tait, Marco Vinceti

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis on the effects of selenium supplementation on immune function in healthy people concludes that the overall impact is inconsistent and heterogeneous. The evidence does not support the need to supplement selenium beyond the recommended dietary intake for beneficial effects on immune function.

Protein intake and bone mineral density: Cross-sectional relationship and longitudinal effects in older adults

Inge Groenendijk, Pol Grootswagers, Aurelia Santoro, Claudio Franceschi, Alberto Bazzocchi, Nathalie Meunier, Aurelie Caille, Corinne Malpuech-Brugere, Agata Bialecka-Debek, Barbara Pietruszka, Susan Fairweather-Tait, Amy Jennings, Lisette C. P. G. M. de Groot

Summary: This study found an association between total and animal protein intake with higher bone mineral density (BMD), while plant protein intake was associated with lower BMD. In individuals with adequate calcium intake and sufficient vitamin D levels, the association between total and animal protein intake with BMD was stronger. Protein supplementation did not lead to significant improvements in BMD.

Total Iron Absorbed from Iron-Biofortified Potatoes Is Higher than that from Nonbiofortified Potatoes: A Randomized Trial Using Stable Iron Isotopes in Women from the Peruvian Highlands

Summary: A study found that iron absorption from iron-biofortified yellow-fleshed potatoes is higher compared to non-biofortified potatoes, suggesting that biofortification of potatoes through conventional breeding can improve iron intake in iron-deficient women.

Biofortified Yellow-Fleshed Potatoes Provide More Absorbable Zinc than a Commonly Consumed Variety: A Randomized Trial Using Stable Isotopes in Women in the Peruvian Highlands

Reyna Liria-Dominguez, Mary Penny, Paul Antony Kroon, Gabriela Burgos, Jack Dainty, Christophe Zeder, Michael B. Zimmermann, Janet King, Richard Mithen, Erick Boy, Olla Al-Jaiballi, Susan Fairweather-Tait

Summary: The study found that zinc-biofortified potatoes provide more absorbable zinc compared to regular potatoes. These biofortified potatoes could help reduce zinc deficiency in populations where potatoes are a staple food.

The role of meat in iron nutrition of vulnerable groups of the UK population

Susan Fairweather-Tait

Summary: Iron deficiency is a common problem in the UK, and this review focuses on the role of meat in iron nutrition, especially for vulnerable groups. Meat contains haem iron, which is absorbed differently from non-haem iron found in cereals and vegetables. Studies show that haem iron has higher bioavailability than non-haem iron. The review also discusses alternatives to meat, such as plant protein, insects, and biofortified crops, as well as food iron fortification. Finally, the consequences of excluding meat from the diet in relation to iron requirements are discussed.
