Vegetables represent a major source of phenolic acids, powerful antioxidants characterized by an organic carboxylic acid function and which present multiple properties beneficial for human health. In consequence, developing new varieties with enhanced content in phenolic acids is an increasingly important breeding objective. Major phenolic acids present in vegetables are derivatives of cinnamic acid and to a lesser extent of benzoic acid. A large diversity in phenolic acids content has been found among cultivars and wild relatives of many vegetable crops. Identification of sources of variation for phenolic acids content can be accomplished by screening germplasm collections, but also through morphological characteristics and origin, as well as by evaluating mutations in key genes. Gene action estimates together with relatively high values for heritability indicate that selection for enhanced phenolic acids content will be efficient. Modern genomics and biotechnological strategies, such as QTL detection, candidate genes approaches and genetic transformation, are powerful tools for identification of genomic regions and genes with a key role in accumulation of phenolic acids in vegetables. However, genetically increasing the content in phenolic acids may also affect other traits important for the success of a variety. We anticipate that the combination of conventional and modern strategies will facilitate the development of a new generation of vegetable varieties with enhanced content in phenolic acids.

Growth and antioxidant responses triggered by water stress in wild relatives of eggplant

Mariola Plazas, Sara Gonzalez-Orenga, Huu Trong Nguyen, Irina M. Morar, Ana Fita, Monica Boscaiu, Jaime Prohens, Oscar Vicente

Summary: This study evaluated drought tolerance in 18 eggplant accessions and 8 wild relatives, identifying accessions with higher drought tolerance based on dry matter content, proline concentration, and biochemical parameters. Tolerant materials such as S. incanum, S. pyracanthos, S. dasyphyllum, and S. torvum showed better performance in terms of oxidative stress and biochemical responses to water stress. The results suggest a high diversity in drought tolerance among eggplant wild relatives, providing insights for breeding programmes to develop new cultivars with higher drought tolerance.

Fruit Composition of Eggplant Lines with Introgressions from the Wild Relative S. incanum: Interest for Breeding and Safety for Consumption

Elena Rosa-Martinez, Ana M. Adalid-Martinez, Maria Dolores Garcia-Martinez, Giulio Mangino, Maria Dolores Raigon, Mariola Plazas, Pietro Gramazio, Jaime Prohens, Santiago Vilanova

Summary: The wild species Solanum incanum has been used in breeding eggplant introgression lines with potential for stress tolerance and fruit quality. Evaluation of fruit composition traits showed that the introgression lines produced fruits with safe levels of glycoalkaloids and similar nutritional quality to the recipient parent. Additionally, potential candidate genes were identified for several traits, providing new information for eggplant breeding.

European traditional tomatoes galore: a result of farmers' selection of a few diversity-rich loci

Jose Blanca, Clara Pons, Javier Montero-Pau, David Sanchez-Matarredona, Peio Ziarsolo, Lilian Fontanet, Josef Fisher, Mariola Plazas, Joan Casals, Jose Luis Rambla, Alessandro Riccini, Samuela Pombarella, Alessandra Ruggiero, Maria Sulli, Stephania Grillo, Angelos Kanellis, Giovanni Giuliano, Richard Finkers, Maria Cammareri, Silvana Grandillo, Andrea Mazzucato, Mathilde Causse, Maria Jose Diez, Jaime Prohens, Dani Zamir, Joaquin Canizares, Antonio Jose Monforte, Antonio Granell

Summary: A study on European traditional tomato varieties found that high phenotypic diversity was created by traditional farmer-driven selection, inadvertently combining a few polymorphic loci. Analysis of 1254 tomato accessions revealed a continuous genetic gradient between traditional and modern varieties, with low genetic diversity and distinct genetic groups among traditional European tomatoes. Spanish and Italian varieties showed higher genetic diversity, possibly indicating independent secondary centers of diversity, while other varieties may be the result of recent migrations and hybridizations among European regions. A few highly polymorphic loci were associated with fruit morphological traits in the European traditional collection, suggesting a history of balancing selection by tomato farmers to maintain morphological variation.

Raluca Cicevan, Adriana F. Sestras, Mariola Plazas, Monica Boscaiu, Santiago Vilanova, Pietro Gramazio, Oscar Vicente, Jaime Prohens, Radu E. Sestras

Summary: Marigolds are flowering plants with numerous uses and ornamental value. This study analyzed the morphological and genetic differences among 21 cultivars of three marigold species. The results showed significant differences in genotypes between cultivars and species, including variations in seed characteristics, germination capacity, and adult plant morphological traits. The analysis also revealed considerable genetic diversity among the evaluated species, which has important implications for conserving germplasm and breeding new marigold varieties.

Summary: In the face of climate change, improving crop tolerance to drought is crucial due to its negative impact on agricultural yields globally. Researchers studied the response to drought of eggplant and its wild relatives and found that certain wild relatives, such as S. insanum, displayed better drought tolerance. These findings can be valuable for future breeding programs aimed at enhancing drought tolerance in eggplants.

Induction of water stress in major Solanum crops: A review on methodologies and their application for identifying drought tolerant materials

Martin Flores-Saavedra, Mariola Plazas, Santiago Vilanova, Jaime Prohens, Pietro Gramazio

Summary: The Solanum genus includes important vegetable crops such as tomato, potato, and eggplant, which are crucial for food security. Climate change is causing higher temperatures and reduced precipitation, leading to drought and water stress in Solanum crops and decreased yields. This review examines different methods for inducing water stress in Solanum crops and discusses the benefits, drawbacks, and challenges of each method. It also explores the impact of water deficit on growth, physiology, and biochemistry of Solanum crops, as well as the use of wild species to improve water stress tolerance.

Characterization and QTL identification in eggplant introgression lines under two N fertilization levels

Elena Rosa-Martinez, Gloria Villanueva, Ahmet Sahin, Pietro Gramazio, Maria Dolores Garcia-Martinez, Maria Dolores Raigon, Santiago Vilanova, Jaime Prohens, Mariola Plazas

Summary: Lowering nitrogen inputs is an important goal in sustainable agriculture. This study evaluated a set of introgression lines under different nitrogen treatments and identified potential QTL associated with various traits. The results showed that lowering nitrogen inputs did not significantly affect plant growth and yield, but most traits were highly correlated under both treatments. The introgressed fragment of S. incanum generally had a negative effect on the traits, and the genetic differences among the lines provided insights for eggplant breeding under low nitrogen fertilization.
