Environmental cues play important roles in the regulation of an animal's physiology and behaviour. The purpose of the present study was to test the hypothesis that ambient temperature was a cue to induce adjustments in body mass, body temperature and thermogenic capacity, associated with changes in serum leptin levels in the tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri chinensis). The results showed that the tree shrew increased resting metabolic rate (RMR), nonshivering thermogenesis (NST) and body mass when exposed to the cold. Uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) content of brown adipose tissue (BAT) increased in the cold exposure. Also serum leptin levels were positively correlated with body mass. Together, these data supported our hypothesis that ambient temperature was a cue to induce changes in body mass and metabolism. Serum leptin participated in the regulation of energy balance and body weight in the tree shrew.

Response of different waterbird guilds to landscape changes along the yellow sea coast: A case study

Ning Li, Ning Tang, Zheng Wang, Lin Zhang

Summary: The health of China's coastal wetlands is crucial for global bird biodiversity. However, land reclamation, invasive species, and over-harvesting have altered the landscape, affecting bird diversity. This study focuses on the impact of long-term habitat changes on wintering waterbirds in the Tiaozini wetland. It reveals that natural habitats decreased while human-modified habitats increased, leading to changes in species number and population size of different waterbird guilds.

Analysis of differential metabolites and metabolic pathways in adipose tissue of tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri) under gradient cooling acclimation

Dongmin Hou, Huibao Chen, Ting Jia, Lin Zhang, Wenrong Gao, Simeng Chen, Wanlong Zhu

Summary: To investigate the influence of gradient cooling acclimation on body mass regulation in T. belangeri, WAT and BAT were collected from the control group and the gradient cooling acclimation group. Measurements of body mass, food intake, thermogenic capacity, differential metabolites, and metabolic pathways were conducted. The results revealed that gradient cooling acclimation increased body mass, food intake, resting metabolic rate (RMR), non-shivering thermogenesis (NST), and the masses of WAT and BAT. Significant differential metabolites and metabolic pathways were observed in both WAT and BAT.

Effects of exogenous melatonin on body mass and thermogenesis in red-backed vole (Eothenomys miletus) between Kunming and Dali regions

Hui-Bao Chen, Ting Jia, Zheng-Kun Wang, Wan-Long Zhu

Summary: The study found that exogenous melatonin injections caused a decrease in body mass and food intake, but an increase in resting metabolic rate and nonshivering thermogenesis in red-backed voles. The injections also resulted in enhanced protein content, mitochondrial protein content, and activity of key enzymes in the liver and brown adipose tissue. Furthermore, the effects of melatonin on body mass and thermogenesis differed between the two studied regions, with voles from Kunming being more sensitive to melatonin.

Bone size and its effect on body mass in Eothenomys miletus from the Hengduan Mountain region

Y. Qiu Liao, Ting Jia, Wan-Long Zhu

Summary: Morphological characteristics are influenced by habitat characteristics and show differences within and between species. This study found that Eothenomys miletus from different regions in the Hengduan Mountain have differentiation in bone morphological indices. The length of sternum and lumbar vertebrae showed differences between regions, and trunk and limb bones were longer in regions with low latitude and high temperature. Principal component analysis and cluster analysis divided the populations into two categories. The increase in bone length and mass correlated with body mass, but did not follow Bergmann's Law and was influenced by altitude, temperature, latitude, as well as food, terrain, and living habits.

Phenotypic trait variations in the frog Nanorana parkeri: differing adaptive strategies to altitude between sexes

Dongmin Hou, Ting Jia, Yue Ren, Wanlong Zhu, Pengfei Liu

Summary: Altitude-driven adaptive variation in body size is common in animals, but the study of other phenotypic trait changes in ectotherms is limited. This study investigated the adaptive evolution of phenotypic traits in response to altitude in the high Himalaya frog Nanorana parkeri. The results revealed sex-specific differences in body mass, organ mass, and limb length along elevation gradients. It was observed that heart and liver mass showed significant negative correlations with increasing altitude in both sexes, suggesting a trade-off in life history strategies among populations.

Summary: This study provides the first detailed account of the genetic and physiological adaptation to changing environmental temperatures and the reasons causing intraspecific divergence in Eothenomys miletus from the Hengduan Mountain region. Significant phenotypic and genetic alterations were observed in E. miletus populations from the HM region, and there was asymmetric gene flow among these populations, indicating an isolation-by-island model.

Effects of Temperature, Photoperiod and Food Quantity on Body Mass and Thermogenesis in Apodemus chevrieri

Ting Jia, Dong-Min Hou, Wan-Long Zhu

Summary: In this study, we conducted a three-factor experiment to investigate the influence of temperature, photoperiod, and food quantity on Apodemus chevrieri. The results showed that body mass, RMR, NST, leptin levels, and hypothalamic neuropeptide gene expression were all significantly affected by these ecological factors. Temperature, food quantity, and photoperiod had different effects on physiological indexes and energy balance in A. chevrieri, and leptin was involved in the regulation of body mass.
