Summary: This study evaluated the use of digoxin among atrial fibrillation patients in outpatient visits in the US from 2006 to 2015. The analysis included adult patient visits to office-based physicians using the NAMCS database. Descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression were used to analyze the use of digoxin and identify predictors. The percentage of visits with digoxin usage declined during the study period, and predictors of digoxin use included female sex, congestive heart failure, and a higher number of concurrent medications. Summary: Research shows that there is a higher rate of psychotic disorder diagnoses among people of color, especially individuals of African descent. This study aimed to examine the ambulatory care visits diagnosed with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders among different racial/ethnic groups. The findings revealed significant racial disparities in the diagnosis of these disorders, with Black individuals being disproportionately affected, particularly in the cases of schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder.

Summary: This study found a considerable number of low-value prostate cancer screenings during primary care visits through data analysis. For each additional service ordered, the odds of ordering a low-value PSA increased by 49% and the odds of performing a low-value DRE increased by 37%. Organizations aiming to reduce low-value screenings may need to focus on providers who order a high number of tests.

Summary: The National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) is a valuable tool for identifying disparities in healthcare in the United States. Studies utilizing NAMCS data have found disparities in various areas such as race/ethnicity, geographic location, age, insurance type, and patient outcomes related to different medical specialties. Research studies using NAMCS may lead to better healthcare outcomes by addressing and reducing these disparities.

Summary: The study found that patients with a history of psychiatric disorders and currently using multiple psychotropic medications are more likely to have increased severity of overactive bladder symptoms. A history of depression and current use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors were associated with increased severity of stress urinary incontinence symptoms.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the trends of cyclobenzaprine utilization among patients presenting to the emergency department in the United States from 2007 to 2019. The results showed a slight decrease in the use of cyclobenzaprine during this period, but it still had a significant utilization rate in the emergency department. However, the efficacy of cyclobenzaprine in treating musculoskeletal pain remains controversial, and further studies are needed to evaluate its overall effectiveness and risk-benefit analysis.

Summary: This study examined racial/ethnic disparities in opioid prescriptions for abdominal pain patients in ambulatory clinics. The results showed that Hispanic patients had lower odds of receiving opioid prescriptions compared to non-Hispanic White patients and non-Hispanic patients overall. Further research is needed to understand the root causes of this disparity and ensure equitable access to pain management.

Summary: This study investigated the association between physician-patient communication and patient satisfaction with overactive bladder (OAB) medical care, as well as clinical effectiveness. The findings suggest that adequate physician-patient communication significantly contributes to improving clinical effectiveness and satisfaction with medical care in OAB patients, thereby increasing treatment continuation.

Summary: Large observational studies have found that anticholinergic overactive bladder medications may be associated with a higher risk of mortality. Among different populations of older adults, oxybutynin is found to have a significantly higher mortality risk (26-58%) compared to other anticholinergic medications or 63 agonists. Overall, anticholinergic medications for overactive bladder may increase the risk of mortality, while a multicountry study showed that users of 63 agonists had a 20% lower risk of mortality compared to anticholinergic users.

Summary: This study aimed to compare a backfill-assisted voiding trial (VT) with and without a postvoid residual (PVR) after pelvic reconstructive surgery. The results showed that checking a PVR does not significantly affect VT failure, postoperative duration of catheterization, UTI, or voiding dysfunction.
