Summary: The prognostic value of body mass index (BMI) in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) was investigated in this study when stratified by alcohol drinking status. The results showed that BMI was only a prognostic factor in patients who had ever drank alcohol, but not in those who had never drank alcohol. Further research is needed to understand the mechanism underlying the interaction between BMI and alcohol consumption on the prognosis of ESCC patients.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association of preoperative systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) with the clinical outcomes of patients diagnosed with bladder cancer and who underwent radical cystectomy (RC). The study found that a high SII level was associated with worse overall survival and recurrence-free survival.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of lifetime obesity on the development of urinary incontinence (UI) and found that chronic, increased body mass index status is associated with an elevated risk of UI later in life. Additionally, the severity of UI appears to worsen with the duration of increased body mass index status. Thus, weight management should be supported throughout one's lifetime to reduce the risk of UI.

Summary: The modified weight loss grading system (mWLGS) was developed and validated in Chinese cancer patients, showing better prognostic differentiation for predicting the prognosis, especially in lung and gastrointestinal cancers. High-grade mWLGS was associated with poor quality of life and adverse 90-day outcomes.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the association between BMI subcategories and perioperative complications from radical cystectomy and to identify a BMI threshold that can help prevent and mitigate complication risk. The study found that overweight and obese patients have a higher risk of complications compared to normal BMI patients, and the risk significantly increases when the BMI exceeds 34 kg/m(2).

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of the systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) in bladder cancer (BCa) patients treated with radical cystectomy (RC), and develop a survival predictive model through establishing a nomogram. Results showed that higher SIRI grade was significantly associated with poor prognosis, and the nomogram based on SIRI had better predictive performance compared to TNM stage. ROC analysis demonstrated that nomograms could better predict the 3- and 5-year OS and DFS, with calibration curves showing significant agreement between the nomogram and the actual observation.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the long-term evolution of ADL/IADL limitations in stroke survivors and compare them with the stroke-free population, as well as investigate the impact of initial level of disability on these limitations. The findings show that ADL/IADL limitations remain stable during the chronic phase after stroke for 3 to 6 years, followed by an increase. This increase is faster in younger stroke cases, indicating an age effect. The level of disability at 1 to 2 years poststroke also influences the evolution of limitations, with severe disability associated with a reduction in limitations at 5 to 6 years poststroke.

Summary: This comprehensive review of human adipose tissue fails to mention the role of the endocannabinoid system in fat metabolism. The endogenous cannabinoids and their receptors, found in both white and brown fat, have been recognized as key players in adipose tissue metabolism. Rimonabant, an inverse agonist of cannabinoid receptor type 1, has shown promising effects as a therapeutic target for obesity, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance, although its clinical use was discontinued due to neuropsychiatric side effects.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of a new multi-degree-of-freedom articulating laparoscopic instrument, ArtiSential, in renal surgery and compared it with a straight-shaped instrument and the da Vinci surgical system. The results showed that ArtiSential had shorter operative times for renal pedicle clamping and ureter dissection compared to the robotic system, but longer operative time for bladder repair. There were no significant differences among the groups in terms of blood loss or intraoperative complications.

Summary: This study compared the anti-prostate cancer effects of the novel biguanide derivative IM176 with those of metformin and phenformin. The results showed that IM176 effectively reduced the viability of prostate cancer cells and induced apoptosis, demonstrating comparable anti-tumor effects to other biguanides. Therefore, IM176 may be a new candidate for the treatment of patients with prostate cancer.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the impact of preoperative renal impairment on the oncological outcomes of patients with urothelial carcinoma who underwent radical cystectomy. Patients were divided into two groups based on glomerular filtration rates (GFR) and compared for clinicopathological characteristics and oncological outcomes. The results show that GFR values in the range of 60<_GFR<90 mL/min/1.73 m2 are independent prognostic factors for poor recurrence-free survival, cancer-specific survival, and overall survival in patients after radical cystectomy compared to GFR values of >_90 mL/min/1.73 m2.
