Summary: Aloysia polystachya, commonly known as burrito, is a South American plant used by Brazilian healers for cardiovascular diseases. The ethanol-soluble fraction of its leaves (ESAP) showed cardioprotective effects in spontaneously hypertensive rats without toxicity. The chemical profile of ESAP included organic acids, flavones, and glycosylated compounds.

Summary: This study evaluated the antibacterial and anxiolytic effects of essential oils and ethanolic extracts from three species of Lippia (L. alba, L. sidoides, and L. gracilis). The extracts showed significant antibacterial activity, especially those from L. sidoides, and L. alba extract presented the most significant antibiotic-enhancing effect. Additionally, the extracts exhibited anxiolytic effects through modulation of the GABA(A) and 5-HT receptors. These findings provide new pharmacological evidence for potential therapeutic approaches and food preservation using Lippia species.

Summary: Pressurized liquid extraction was used to obtain a phytocomplex from Lippia citriodora leaves rich in bioactive compounds, which was then encapsulated in phospholipid vesicles to enhance its protective effect against oxidative stress in the intestine. The phytochemicals were identified and quantified, and the extract was incorporated in small and stable PEVs modified with glucidex. The formulations were cytocompatible and demonstrated the ability to protect Caco-2 cells against oxidative stress, making them suitable for use in functional foods.

Summary: The study investigated the phytochemical properties of lemon verbena and the oxidative stability of the fat component in cookies containing lemon verbena powder and essential oil (EO). The results showed that lemon verbena had positive effects on the aroma and taste of cookies during storage, and could prolong the shelf life, but lemon verbena powder had adverse effects on mouthfeel and consumer acceptance.

Summary: The current study assessed the effects of a natural plant-based dietary supplement containing lemon verbena extract on stress management and sleep quality. The results showed that participants taking the supplement experienced a significant reduction in perceived stress and cortisol levels after 8 weeks. Furthermore, the supplement users reported lower stress levels even during the washout period, indicating a lasting effect. Their sleep quality also improved, with a stronger effect observed in women, as evidenced by sleep tracking data. Therefore, lemon verbena extract purified in phenylpropanoids appears to be a natural solution for improving stress and sleep quality.

Summary: Lippia sidoides Cham. is a plant frequently mentioned in traditional medicine for its medicinal properties. This study investigated the chemical composition and toxicity of its aqueous extract, and found it to have low toxicity and anxiolytic effects on adult zebrafish. These findings support the safe use of the plant's aqueous extract in new drug development and traditional medicine.

Summary: The study identified chemical components of AC essential oils from two different locations in Palestine using GC/MS technique. The Baqa al-Gharbiyye AC EO showed stronger antioxidant and cytotoxic activities than the Umm al-Fahm EO, but both exhibited potential antimicrobial effects against MRSA, P. vulgaris, and C. albicans.

Summary: The present study aimed to determine the chemical composition, cytotoxic, genotoxic, mutagenic potential, and antioxidant activity of an aqueous extract of Aloysia gratissima leaves. Results showed that the extract contained terpenoids, flavonoids, and phenolic acids, and exhibited cytotoxic activities against various cancer cells, as well as DNA damage and mutations. Therefore, caution should be exercised when using this plant preparation, despite its pharmacological potential.

Summary: The essential oil of L. origanoides has shown to have tocolytic activity in experimental models, possibly by opening potassium channels, increasing cAMP, and reducing intracellular calcium levels. This relaxing effect may help reduce pain in animal dysmenorrhea models, and can be potentiated by the drugs nifedipine or mefenamic acid.

Summary: The cardioprotective effects of an ethanol-soluble fraction of A. polystachya (ESAP) on isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarction in rats were investigated. Results showed that ESAP significantly reduced electrocardiographic changes, improved ventricular ejection fraction, and decreased serum levels of CK-MB and cTNT. These findings suggest that ESAP could be an effective tool against isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarction in rats.

Summary: This study evaluated the anesthetic potential of essential oils from Aloysia triphylla, Lippia sidoides, and Mentha piperita on juvenile tambaqui, finding that all three oils were effective anesthetics. The time to reach anesthesia stages was inversely proportional to the concentration of the oils. Histopathological damage to the gills mainly included hypertrophy, hyperplasia, lamellar fusion, and chloride cell proliferation.
