A novel hydrocarbon-degrading, Gram-negative, obligately aerobic, non-motile, non-sporulating, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain TBF2/20.2(T), was isolated from a biofilter clean-up facility set up on a hydrocarbon-contaminated site in Hungary. It was characterized by using a polyphasic approach to determine its taxonomic position. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolate is affiliated with the genus Olivibacter in the family Sphingobacteriaceae. It was found to be related most closely to Olivibacter ginsengisoli Gsoil 060(T) (93.3% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). Strain TBF2/20.2(T) grew at pH 6-9 (optimally at pH 6.5-7.0) and at 15-42 degrees C (optimally at 30-37 degrees C). The major fatty acids were iso-C-15:0 (39.4%), summed feature 3 (iso-C-15:0 2-OH and/or C-16:1 omega 7c; 26.0%), iso-C-17:0 3-OH (14.5%) and C-16:0 (4.5 %). The major menaquinone was MK-7 and the predominant polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine. The DNA G+C content of strain TBF2/20.2(T) was 41.2 mol%. Physiological and chemotaxonomic data further confirmed the distinctiveness of strain TBF2/20.2(T) from recognized members of the genus Olivibacter. Thus, strain TBF2/20.2(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Olivibacter, for which the name Olivibacter oleidegradans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TBF2/20.2(T) (=NCAIM B 02393(T) =CCM 7765(T)).

Evaluating the aerobic xylene-degrading potential of the intrinsic microbial community of a legacy BTEX-contaminated aquifer by enrichment culturing coupled with multi-omics analysis: uncovering the role of Hydrogenophaga strains in xylene degradation

Sinchan Banerjee, Anna Bedics, Peter Harkai, Balazs Kriszt, Nagaraju Alpula, Andras Tancsics

Summary: This study investigated the microbial community diversity and degradation abilities of xylene isomers in a legacy BTEX-contaminated site. The results showed that different bacterial groups were involved in the degradation of different xylene isomers, and the composition of the bacterial community was distinct for each isomer. Two Hydrogenophaga strains were identified as effective degraders of p-xylene, and comparative whole-genome analysis revealed the genomic adaptations that contribute to their different xylene isomer-degrading abilities.

Summary: Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a potent mycotoxin and natural carcinogen, while sterigmatocystin (STC) is another similar mycotoxin. AFB1 is found to be more harmful to biological systems than STC, but there is limited understanding of STC toxicity. The study reveals that activated STC is more toxic than AFB1, and STC appears to be more toxic in the newly developed microinjection zebrafish method. This suggests the need for more complex biomonitoring systems for mycotoxin risk assessment.

Summary: Glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) have an impact on the development of antibiotic resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Exposure to 0.5% GBHs resulted in decreased susceptibility to imipenem in P. aeruginosa strains, while the effectiveness of other carbapenems was not affected. The interactions between these chemicals may affect microbial communities.

Combined Omics Approach Reveals Key Differences between Aerobic and Microaerobic Xylene-Degrading Enrichment Bacterial Communities: Rhodoferax?A Hitherto Unknown Player Emerges from the Microbial Dark Matter

Andras Tancsics, Sinchan Banerjee, Andre Soares, Anna Bedics, Balazs Kriszt

Summary: Xylenes, particularly the ortho and para isomers, are known to be the least biodegradable among monoaromatic hydrocarbons in oxygen-limited subsurface environments. However, little is known about the diversity of bacteria capable of degrading xylene isomers under microaerobic conditions. To address this, aerobic and microaerobic xylene-degrading enrichment cultures were established, and the associated bacterial communities were analyzed. The results showed significant differences in the composition of the bacterial communities between aerobic and microaerobic conditions, with the genus Pseudomonas being dominant in both, but Rhodoferax and Azovibrio lineages only abundant under microaerobic conditions, while Sphingobium completely replaced them under aerobic conditions. The study also identified specific enzymes and their types that play a role in xylene degradation under different oxygen conditions, revealing the importance of aromatic ring activation, types of dioxygenases, and the ability to respire nitrate for xylene degraders.

Interaction of Fumonisin B1, N-Palmitoyl-Fumonisin B1, 5-O-Palmitoyl-Fumonisin B1, and Fumonisin B4 Mycotoxins with Human Serum Albumin and Their Toxic Impacts on Zebrafish Embryos

Zsolt Csenki, Tibor Bartok, Illes Bock, Levente Horvath, Beata Lemli, Balazs Zoltan Zsido, Cserne Angeli, Csaba Hetenyi, Istvan Szabo, Bela Urbanyi, Melinda Kovacs, Miklos Poor

Summary: Fumonisins, including fumonisin B1 (FB1), are common food contaminants that can have harmful effects on humans and animals. Acylated metabolites of FB1, such as N-palmitoyl-FB1 and 5-O-palmitoyl-FB1, have higher toxicity compared to FB1. Our study investigated the interactions of these mycotoxins with human serum albumin and their toxic effects on zebrafish embryos. The findings suggest that palmitoyl-FB1 derivatives form stable complexes with albumin and have a greater toxic effect on zebrafish compared to FB1.

Presence, variation, and potential ecological impact of microplastics in the largest shallow lake of Central Europe

Reka Svigruha, Bence Prikler, Anna Farkas, Andras Acs, Istvan Fodor, Kalman Tapolczai, Janos Schmidt, Gabor Bordos, Judit Hahn, Peter Harkai, Edit Kaszab, Sandor Szoboszlay, Zsolt Pirger

Summary: The presence of microplastics (MPs) in freshwater ecosystems, such as Lake Balaton, is a growing concern worldwide. The study found seven different types of MPs in Lake Balaton, with polypropylene and polyethylene being the most common. Ecotoxicological experiments showed that MPs and progestogens can affect the behavior and biochemical levels of D. magna, but their combined effects were negligible. The presence of MPs may reduce fitness in freshwater organisms, but the threat of MPs as carriers of progestogens is limited.
