Summary: Fatigue performance is crucial for materials and welded joints in engineering structures. The study on A6005 aluminum alloy welded joints revealed that the linear fatigue stress-life model was rational, and the presence of metallic oxides or discrete barlike materials could lead to crack nucleation.

Summary: This study investigated the scaling characteristics of root-mean-squared roughness for both fractal and non-fractal profiles, finding continuous variation of dimension values between the two types of profiles. It successfully matched the ideal fractal dimension in the fractal region and characterized the complexity of non-fractal profiles using the RSE method. The traditional FD calculation methods failed to reflect the complexity variation of non-fractal profiles, highlighting the feasibility of abnormal implementation of W-M function and the capability of RSE method in understanding nonlinear behaviors.

Summary: This study proposes a no-contact and efficient method for measuring the roughness of concrete fracture surfaces using fringe-projection technology. A simple phase-correction method is presented to improve measurement efficiency and accuracy. Experimental results show that the method meets the requirements for concrete fracture-surface measurement and is effective for detecting concrete fracture-surface features.

Summary: Recent advances in nanotechnology have allowed the fabrication of advanced materials with fractal-like geometries, where Fractional Brownian surfaces are often used to model and characterize these complex geometries. A method based on small-angle scattering technique is proposed to extract main structural parameters of surfaces/interfaces from experimental data, showing good agreement with theoretical values for various classes of Fractional Brownian surfaces.

Summary: The research characterizes the fracture of sandstone from the perspective of the 3D morphology of the fracture surface. Two fractal dimension calculation methods are used to quantify the 3D morphology, and their applicability is verified. It is observed that the fractal dimension has a strong correlation with the fracture mechanism, with a decreasing trend as the failure mechanism transitions from tension fracture to shear fracture.

Summary: Fractal characteristics and the fractal dimension are widely used in describing and characterizing rock fracture networks for various engineering purposes. This paper reviews traditional fractal calculation methods and proposes a new simple method based on the head/tail breaks approach. It is found that rock fracture networks share similarities with urban road traffic networks, and the application of space syntax metric can effectively reflect the spatial relationship of rock fractures.

Summary: This study describes the formation and development of fracture networks using fractal theory and analyzes their structural characteristics. Numerical calculations are used to determine the fractal dimension, equivalent hydraulic conductivity, and equivalent non-Darcy coefficient of the fracture network, and the influence of the fractal dimension on hydraulic conductivity and non-Darcy coefficient is studied.

Summary: This study experimentally investigates the nonlinear flow characteristics and channelization of fluid through rough-walled fractures during shear process. The results show that the critical Reynolds number increases with increasing shear displacement but decreases with increasing fracture surface roughness. As the shear displacement increases, preferential flow paths become more distinct and the area of single contacts increases.

Summary: This study employs the Weierstrass-Mandelbrot (W-M) function to model the irregular fissure surfaces and investigates their effects on fluid flow. The paper finds a strong correlation between flow rate and fractal parameters, and proposes modified cubic law equations. The study also discusses the similarity of W-M surfaces and real fissure surfaces.

Summary: In this study, the effect of low normal stress levels on the shear behavior of jointed samples was investigated using the discrete element method (DEM). The results showed that the effectiveness of normal load is greater after the peak and that increasing normal stress changes the behavior from brittle to ductile. The shear strength of jointed samples is less affected by changes in normal stress at higher joint persistency (JP). Additionally, the shear stiffness of the sample increases with normal stress, and increasing JP does not have a significant effect on shear stiffness.

Summary: This paper presents the results of laboratory tests and field surveys using ground penetrating radar (GPR) method to detect qanats in Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman, Iran. The laboratory experiments aimed to determine the optimal frequency of GPR surveys in detecting qanats in the study site. The results showed that medium-frequency GPR antennas can penetrate to depths of tens of meters in sand-dominated subsoils, but the penetration depth decreases with increasing soil moisture and clay content.
