The purpose of the study was to investigate employee perceptions during a lean transformation.(1) The combination of case study and survey methodologies was used to define elements influencing the perceived lean success of shop floor employees. According to our findings, belief, commitment, work method and communication all have a considerable direct impact on workers' perceptions of lean success. However, their effects are very different based on the scope and focus of changes that is influenced by process characteristics. Perceptions regarding successful lean transformation during a moderate reorganisation of the company's welding plant, where mainly males work, are affected only by commitment and work method, whereas the deep reorganisation of the sewing plant (populated by female employees) is only influenced by belief and communication. Industry 4.0: a review and analysis of contingency and performance effects

Levente Szasz, Krisztina Demeter, Bela-Gergely Racz, David Losonci

Summary: This study, based on a large-scale survey of 705 manufacturing plants from 22 countries, finds that implementing Industry 4.0 technologies has a positive impact on operational performance, including cost, quality, delivery, and flexibility. The research also suggests that the size of firms, competitiveness of countries, and multinational status can affect the implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies differently.

Road to digital manufacturing - a longitudinal case-based analysis

Krisztina Demeter, David Losonci, Judit Nagy

Summary: The study aims to investigate the resource alteration during digital manufacturing transformation using the adaptation aspect of dynamic capabilities theory. Through a longitudinal case study, the research reveals how a factory adapts its resources and capabilities at different stages of transformation. The findings suggest that digital transformation requires bottom-up initiatives and top-down leadership, along with substantial investments in technological and human resources.

Firm competitiveness: A general model and a manufacturing application

Attila Chikan, Erzsebet Czako, Bence Kiss-Dobronyi, David Losonci

Summary: This paper aims to connect strategic management and operations by proposing the concept of Firm Competitiveness Index (FCI) based on the resource-based view of the firm. The study finds a positive impact of dynamic production capabilities on firm competitiveness, while no significant relationship is found between ordinary production capabilities and firm-level competitiveness.

Technology, lean, quality and human resource practices in manufacturing: how does size as a contingency factor matter?

Levente Szasz, Krisztina Demeter, Otto Csiki, Reka Horvath

Summary: This paper investigates how firm size influences the implementation and performance impact of four key manufacturing practices. The findings suggest that quality and lean practices consistently enhance performance, while technology and human resource practices are more beneficial in the latest sample. The study also supports the selection and mediation models, indicating that larger firms generally invest more in these practices and achieve higher performance.

How to improve firm performance? - The role of production capabilities and routines

Otto Csiki, Krisztina Demeter, David Losonci

Summary: In this study, the authors integrate functional level production capabilities and shop floor-level production routines, and explore their interlinkages and contributions to firm performance. The findings suggest that production dynamic capabilities drive the renewal of production ordinary capabilities at the functional level, and the deployment of Industry 4.0 is influenced by lean production at the shop floor level. The study also shows the different roles of these capabilities in shaping shop floor production routines and their impact on firm performance.

Strategic drivers behind the digital transformation of subsidiaries: a longitudinal approach

Krisztina Demeter, David Losonci, Andrea Szalavetz, Mate Baksa

Summary: This study investigates the strategic drivers of digital transformation in subsidiaries. The research framework combines the resource-based, institution-based, and industry-based views to determine these drivers. Two longitudinal case studies conducted at Hungarian subsidiaries of global automotive suppliers revealed that each view emphasizes different strategic drivers. The subsidiaries' digital transformation is propelled by proactive local management and established process improvement routines (dynamic capabilities); a parent-pull relation (internal institutions) and state support attracting foreign direct investment (external institutions); as well as increasing buyer expectations and supplier-related factors (industry-based view). By integrating these views, it is argued that drivers related to the external institutional context and industry competition undergo filtering by global management before contributing to resource adjustments at subsidiaries in a top-down manner. Despite the seeming determinism of the digital transformation process, local managements can actively shape digital transformation, even that of multinational enterprises.

Examining the impact of market power discrepancy between supply chain partners on firm financial performance

Jing Gu, Xinyu Shi, Junyao Wang, Xun Xu

Summary: The asymmetric market power between a firm and its partners negatively affects the firm's financial performance. Building relationships with suppliers or customers that have matched market power is the best approach. The strength of the buyer-supplier relationship amplifies the negative impact of asymmetric market power, while the level of relationship embeddedness reduces its negative effect. Moreover, firm-specific institutional, industry, and regional economic heterogeneities also influence the financial impact of asymmetric market power.

Deep Reinforcement Learning for One-Warehouse Multi-Retailer inventory management

Illya Kaynov, Marijn van Knippenberg, Vlado Menkovski, Albert van Breemen, Willem van Jaarsveld

Summary: The One-Warehouse Multi-Retailer (OWMR) system is a typical distribution and inventory system. Previous research has focused on heuristic reordering and allocation strategies, which are time-consuming and problem-specific. This paper proposes a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) algorithm for OWMR problems, which infers a multi-discrete action distribution and improves performance with a random rationing policy.

Integrated planning and scheduling of engineer-to-order projects using a Lamarckian Layered Genetic Algorithm

Anas Neumann, Adnene Hajji, Monia Rekik, Robert Pellerin

Summary: This paper presents a new mathematical formulation for planning and scheduling activities of Engineer-To-Order (ETO) projects, along with a new ETO strategy to reduce the impacts of design uncertainty. The study proposes a hybrid Layered Genetic Algorithm combined with an adaptive Lamarckian learning process (LLGA) and compares it with the branch-and-cut procedure of CPLEX. The results show good performance of the proposed mathematical model for small and medium-sized instances.

Learning efficient in-store picking strategies to reduce customer encounters in omnichannel retail

Fabio Neves-Moreira, Pedro Amorim

Summary: Omnichannel retailers are using stores as distribution centers to provide faster online order fulfillment services. However, in-store picking operations can impact the offline customer experience. To address this, we propose a Dynamic In-store Picker Routing Problem (diPRP) that minimizes customer encounters while fulfilling online orders. Our solution approach combines mathematical programming and reinforcement learning to find efficient picking policies that reduce customer encounters.

Supply chain coopetition: A review of structures, mechanisms and dynamics

Korina Katsaliaki, Sameer Kumar, Vasilis Loulos

Summary: This research conducts a systematic literature review (SLR) and content analysis on Supply Chain Coopetition (SCC) through the PRISMA framework. It examines the theory of coopetition and organizational relationships in intra-firm and inter-firm supply chains, focusing on collaboration between rival manufacturers. The study identifies structures and mechanisms of coopetition, such as buyer-supplier coopetition, supply networks coopetition, and production and distribution/logistics coopetition. It provides a holistic approach to SCC management practices and serves as a guide for future research.
