When infested with Fusarium sp., the cereals Triticum aestivum L. emend. Fiori et Paol. cv. 'Bombona', Avena sativa L. cv. 'Deresz', and Hordeum vulgare L. cv. 'Rastik' can emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The VOCs differ both qualitatively and quantitatively from those emitted by non-infested wheat, oat, and barley plants. We detected increased amounts of VOCs released by green leaves (green leaf volatiles - GLVs): (Z)-3-hexenal, (E)-2-hexenal, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, (E)-2-hexen-1-ol, (Z)-3-hexen-1-yl acetate, 1-hexyl acetate as well as the other VOCs like (Z)-ocimen, linalol, linaloloxide, benzyl acetate, indole, and -caryophyllene. The lipoxygenase pathway resulted in the highest release of GLVs in comparison to the other biochemical pathways of volatile production. As a result of Fusarium infestation, the amounts of VOCs varied between tested cereals. We also subjected uninfested wheat, barley, and oat plants to infested wheat plants, and found that these cereals released larger amounts of VOCs compared to control plants. Emitted amounts of VOCs were significantly higher the shorter the distance between uninfested and infested plants.

Environmental Factors Effects on Winter Wheat Competition with Herbicide-Resistant or Susceptible Silky Bentgrass (Apera spica-venti L.) in Poland

Agnieszka Synowiec, Beata Jop, Krzysztof Domaradzki, Cezary Podsiadlo, Dorota Gaweda, Roman Waclawowicz, Anna Wenda-Piesik, Mateusz M. Nowakowski, Jan Bocianowski, Katarzyna Marcinkowska, Tadeusz Praczyk

Summary: The study demonstrated that the competitive effects of winter wheat on herbicide-susceptible or resistant bentgrass vary by location. In dry seasons, bentgrass biotypes with multiple herbicide resistance were more competitive against winter wheat. Despite the wheat CR being less than 1 in up to 64% and 50% of the combinations with the resistant biotype, weather conditions still influenced its competitive effects.

Micro-Chamber/Thermal Extractor (μ-CTE) as a new sampling system for VOCs emitted by feces

Ileana Andreea Ratiu, Radik Mametov, Tomasz Ligor, Boguslaw Buszewski

Summary: VOCs are increasingly being explored for disease diagnosis due to their strategic advantages over classical methods. A new method for feces sampling using a Micro-Chamber/Thermal Extractor was developed, with extraction time, temperature and flow rate found to significantly impact results. Validation through correlation tests and Network analysis provided evidence for the efficacy of the developed model.

Volatile organic compounds released by wheat as a result of striped shieldbug feeding and insect behaviour

Sebastian Sendel, Jan Bocianowski, Boguslaw Buszewski, Magdalena Piesik, Chris A. Mayhew, Dariusz Piesik

Summary: Chemical methods are widely used for plant protection, but they require repeated treatments. This study investigated the effects of adult striped shieldbugs on the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in spring wheat plants and the reactions of these insects to synthetic blends of VOCs, suggesting the potential of eco-friendly strategies using natural repellent properties of plants.

Induction of volatile organic compounds in Triticum aestivum (wheat) plants following infection by different Rhizoctonia pathogens is species specific

Dariusz Piesik, Grzegorz Lemanczyk, Jan Bocianowski, Boguslaw Buszewski, Stefan Vidal, Chris A. Mayhew

Summary: The chemical method is the most popular means of plant protection, but it requires repeated treatments. Therefore, under the European Green Deal, aromatic plants and their repellent properties are considered an eco-friendly alternative. This study shows that plants emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when they are injured by insects, infected by bacteria, or attacked by pathogens, and these compounds have defensive functions.

Summary: In this study, headspace solid phase microextraction (SPME) and gas chromatography time of flight mass spectrometry (GCxGC TOF MS) were used to analyze the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in urine samples of bladder cancer patients and healthy individuals. The results showed that there were different VOC profiles between bladder cancer patients and healthy individuals. Several potential biomarkers were identified.

The Choice of Soybean Cultivar Alters the Underyielding of Protein and Oil under Drought Conditions in Central Poland

Anna Wenda-Piesik, Krystian Ambroziak

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the potential of soybean cultivation in Central Poland under different agrotechnical and agroclimatic conditions, and select the best cultivars for tillage and no-tillage systems. The results show that climate has a significant impact on soybean yield and protein content, with higher yields observed in the no-tillage system and higher protein content in the tillage system.

Relationships between Volatile Organic Compounds Released by Wheat Plants Following Artificial Stress and Their Potential Influence on Natural Pest Management

Dariusz Piesik, Julia Aksoy, Jacek Lyczko, Jan Bocianowski, Boguslaw Buszewski, Magdalena Piesik, Chris A. Mayhew

Summary: There is an urgent need for new agro-technical practices to reduce dependence on artificial pesticides. This study investigates the effectiveness of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by spring wheat plants under different stress conditions. The results suggest that monitoring a single compound from the combination of plant-emitted volatiles could predict the overall condition of a crop, which has implications for the development of real-time monitoring stations.

Summary: The behavioral responses of Hypera rumicis L. adults to varying blends of synthetic plant volatiles (SPVs) at various concentrations are reported. The study found that the different concentrations of SPVs have attractant or repellent effects on the insects. Mated females are only attracted to a specific blend, while mated and unmated males are only attracted to females.

Binucleate Rhizoctonia Strain: A Potential Biocontrol Agent in Wheat Production

Grzegorz Lemanczyk, Karol Lisiecki, Dariusz Piesik

Summary: In order to reduce the threat of Rhizoctonia to plants and provide high quality plant products, it is important to develop sophisticated and environmentally friendly plant protection methods. One effective method is biological control using beneficial agents such as microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) as well as mites or insects. In this study, a non-pathogenic Rhizoctonia strain AG B0 (BNR) was found to reduce the impact of pathogenic strains, Rhizoctonia cerealis and Rhizoctonia solani, indicating a race-specific response of plant genotypes to the protective activity of the non-pathogenic Rhizoctonia.

The Impact of Cultivation Systems on Weed Suppression and the Canopy Architecture of Spring Barley

Roman Waclawowicz, Magdalena Giemza, Elzbieta Pytlarz, Anna Wenda-Piesik

Summary: This study investigates the impact of long-term practices in regenerative agriculture on canopy weed infestation and spring barley architecture. The results show that simplified tillage can reduce weed infestation during the barley tillering stage but increases it during grain harvest. Plowing the cover crop does not effectively reduce weed presence, while increased nitrogen fertilization reduces the number of weeds without affecting their mass. Weed infestation is also influenced by meteorological conditions. Simplified tillage leads to reduced barley density, height, and leaf area index, but increases branching. The study emphasizes the importance of decision-making regarding weed control and highlights the potential of comprehensive methods to favor crop growth conditions while weakening weed infestation potential.
