Objective: To investigate the association between a vegetable-rich food pattern and obesity among Chinese adults. Design: A food pattern rich in vegetables is associated with lower risk of obesity and non-communicable chronic disease in Western countries. A similar food pattern is found in the Chinese population but the cooking method is different. A cross-sectional household survey of 2849 men and women aged 20 years and over was undertaken in 2002 in Jiangsu Province ( response rate, 89.0%). Food intake was assessed by food frequency questionnaire. Factor analysis was used to identify food patterns. Nutrient intake was measured by food weighing plus consecutive individual 3-day food records. Height, weight and waist circumference were measured. Results: The prevalence of general obesity (BMI >= 28 kg m(-2)) was 8.0% in men and 12.7% in women, central obesity was 19.5% (>= 90 cm) and 38.2% (>= 80 cm), respectively. A four-factor solution explained 28.5% of the total variance in food frequency intake. The vegetable-rich food pattern ( whole grains, fruits and vegetables) was positively associated with vegetable oil and energy intake. Prevalence of obesity/central obesity increased across the quartiles of vegetable-rich food pattern. After adjusting for sociodemographic factors and four distinct food patterns, the vegetable-rich pattern was independently associated with obesity. Compared with the lowest quartile of vegetable-rich pattern, the highest quartile had higher risk of general obesity ( men, prevalence ratio (PR): 1.82, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.05-3.14; women, PR: 2.25, 95% CI: 1.45-3.49). Conclusion: The vegetable-rich food pattern was associated with higher risk of obesity/central obesity in Chinese adults in both genders. This association can be linked to the high intake of energy due to generous use of oil for stir-frying the vegetables.

Summary: Low testosterone may be a new risk factor for prediabetes. There is a dose-response relationship between total serum testosterone and prediabetes, which is modified by population characteristics. Higher testosterone levels are associated with a lower risk of prediabetes among US adults, but this association varies by population characteristics, weight status, gender, and lifestyle factors.

Summary: There is a relationship between parental obesity before pregnancy and offspring overweight before the age of two among children of Chinese women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). A study in China followed up with 774 offspring of women diagnosed with GDM from 2010-2012 until the age of two. The study found that maternal obesity before pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of offspring overweight at 1-1.5 years and 1.5-2 years of age, while paternal obesity before pregnancy was only associated with an elevated risk of offspring overweight at 1.5-2 years of age. The presence of both maternal and paternal obesity had an additive effect on the risk of offspring overweight at 1.5-2 years of age.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the longitudinal association between dietary patterns and metabolic disorders in Tibetans living at high altitude areas. The results showed that participants in the third tertile of the urban dietary pattern had a 3.42-fold higher risk of metabolic syndrome compared to those in the first tertile. Moreover, the modern dietary pattern was associated with elevated blood pressure and triglycerides, but inversely associated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. The urban dietary pattern was associated with a higher risk of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, but a lower risk of impaired fasting blood glucose. On the other hand, the pastoral dietary pattern was a risk factor for impaired fasting blood glucose, but protective for central obesity and elevated blood pressure. Altitude was found to modify the associations of the modern and pastoral dietary patterns with metabolic disorders.

Association of Macronutrients Intake with Body Composition and Sarcopenic Obesity in Children and Adolescents: A Population-Based Analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018

Chengjun Tang, Bing Yang, Zumin Shi, Liwang Gao

Summary: This study aimed to examine the association between macronutrient intake and body composition, particularly sarcopenic obesity, in children and adolescents in the United States. Data from 5412 participants aged 6-17 years were analyzed. The study found that a high-fat diet combined with low carbohydrate/protein intake was associated with an increased risk of sarcopenic obesity. To prevent sarcopenic obesity, children should adopt a healthy diet with low-fat composition. However, further randomized clinical trials or longitudinal studies are needed to validate these findings.

Associations of Recreational and Nonrecreational Physical Activity and Body Weight Change on Cardiovascular Disease Mortality During the Obesogenic Transition in the United States: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Follow-up Study

Birinder S. Cheema, Zumin Shi, Rhiannon L. White, Evan Atlantis

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between changes in body weight, recreational and nonrecreational physical activity, and cardiovascular disease mortality during the obesogenic transition in the United States since the 1970s. The findings suggest that individuals who remain inactive or decrease their participation in physical activity have the highest mortality rate, while those who become active do not have an increased risk. Changes in body weight partially mediate the relationship but are not statistically significant.
