Summary: This study used mathematical equation modelling to explore the relationship between diurnal cortisol levels and telomere length within the context of sex. Results showed significant sex differences, with males demonstrating a positive correlation and females a negative correlation between cortisol awakening responses and telomere length. This suggests that when investigating telomere length, factors such as sex and sex hormones need to be carefully considered.

Summary: Loneliness is a complex and uncomfortable feeling that is accentuated with aging. It is related to health indicators and is a risk factor for morbidity and mortality. This study investigated the relationship between loneliness, subjective health, and cortisol in a mixed-sex sample, and found a relationship between loneliness and psychological health in males.

Summary: Intermittent fasting may decrease androgen levels in women and testosterone levels in men. It may have beneficial effects on fertility in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), but could negatively affect metabolic health and libido in men. Further research is needed to confirm these preliminary findings.

Summary: Laboratory studies have shown that stress impairs memory retrieval of individual parts of a memory, particularly linked to the stress hormone cortisol. This study aimed to investigate the effects of pharmacologically elevated cortisol levels on item and associative memory retrieval, as well as any potential sex differences. The results demonstrated that cortisol levels distinctly affect associative memory in female and male participants, but have no effect on item memory, suggesting a complex interaction for stress effects on memory.

Summary: In value-based decision-making tasks, individuals may make decisions based on the feature dimension that reward probabilities vary on. However, in complex, multidimensional environments, stimuli can vary on multiple dimensions simultaneously, making it unclear which feature deserves the most credit for outcomes. This study found that sex was associated with divergent strategies for sampling and learning about the world in mice, with female mice acquiring correct image-value associations more quickly than males.

Summary: Research shows that males generally prefer virgin females, even in species with sperm precedence. Although virginity cannot be selected for in terms of female reproductive success, strong preference for virgins may affect selection on other traits. However, caution is needed in assuming male preference for virgins due to unexplained heterogeneity in effect sizes.

Summary: This study examines the cognitive profiles of older adults with differences in processing strategies between males and females. Results show that there are different cognitive components in males and females, with females exhibiting a better model fit. Females have a decomposed cognitive profile while males have a holistic profile, showing more interrelations between different cognitive functions.

Summary: Symmetry plays a crucial role in sexual selection, as it can be used as a signal of potential mates' quality through nonvisual cues. Researchers discovered that altering gravity can increase asymmetry in Drosophila, and symmetry-based discrimination was observed in both male and female mate-choice tests.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of gender-affirming hormone treatment (GAHT) on the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis of transgender subjects. The results showed that stimulated salivary cortisol levels significantly decreased after 6 months of GAHT in both male and female transgender subjects. Additionally, in female transgender subjects, basal and stimulated serum total cortisol levels increased after hormonal treatment.

Summary: Research shows that females paired with older males as social partners have an overall reproductive advantage, but offspring sired by old males tend to be of lower quality compared to their extra-pair half-siblings, while the opposite is true in nests attended by young males.

Summary: This study investigated the gene expression profiles in the yellow drum using comparative transcriptome analyses. The results showed that artificial gynogenesis or hormonal sex reversal had minimal effects on normal female or male life function. Pathways related to oocyte meiosis, cell cycle, riboflavin metabolism, prolactin signaling, PPAR signaling, cholesterol metabolism, and Jak-STAT signaling were found to play important roles in maintaining the regular proliferation and differentiation of females and males in yellow drum.

Summary: An integrated assessment framework for evaluating the safety of vulnerable road users has been introduced and applied in this study. The framework considers both active and passive safety measures as well as real-world crash scenario parameters. The likelihood of specific crash scenarios occurring and the effectiveness of an Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system were determined through simulations. The developed methodology bridges the gap between active and passive safety evaluations.

Summary: Intense mate competition leads to the evolution of extraordinary mating strategies, such as precopulatory mate guarding. It has been found that male spider mites actively undress females during ecdysis to increase their chances of being the first mate. These findings provide experimental evidence for the adaptive nature of precopulatory mate guarding behavior.

Summary: A widespread effect of climate change is the displacement of organisms from their thermal optima. The interaction between sexual selection and thermal stress was tested in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum. The results indicate that sexual selection can reverse sex differences in thermal sensitivity and might affect the adaptation to global warming.

Summary: Independent predictors of operative time include gender, symptoms, previous upper abdominal surgery, size of the lesion, and cumulative sum of procedures. When compared between different surgeons, operative time was significantly longer for the senior surgeon than for the two junior surgeons. The presence of a mentor in the operative theater and specific training programs may be useful during the learning period.

Summary: Follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) is the second most common malignant thyroid neoplasm after papillary carcinoma (PTC), with a tendency to metastasize to distant sites such as bone and lung. Understanding of the molecular pathology of thyroid tumors has greatly improved over the last 20 years, with the identification of uncommon BRAF non-V600E mutations believed to be associated with low malignant potential follicular patterned tumors.
