Most dropouts occur during the first two visits, with higher rates in general medical settings and for mild and moderate presentations. Financial protection for mental health services was found to be associated with overall increased dropout from care.

Suicide rates among people with serious mental illness: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: This study quantified the suicide rates among people with serious mental illness (bipolar disorder, major depression, or schizophrenia). The findings showed high suicide rates, especially among individuals with major depression. Male patients were found to have a higher risk of suicide compared to females. Poisoning was the most common method of suicide. The study highlights the need for increased psychological assessment and monitoring, as well as further research on regional and age differences in suicide among this population.

A person-centered approach should be adopted to improve the support for residents with SMI in NHs through the PASRR program.

Cancer Screening Among Adults With and Without Serious Mental Illness A Mixed Methods Study

Summary: Individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) are less likely to receive cervical, breast, colorectal, or prostate cancer screening compared to those without SMI. Clinicians identified 5 themes that may explain the lower rates of cancer screening in persons with SMI: access to care, available support, prioritization of other issues, communication, and patient concerns. Improving cancer screening rates in the SMI population will require a multidisciplinary approach to overcome barriers to screening.

The results showed that the most common prescription pattern was second-generation antipsychotic monotherapy, with risperidone being the most frequently prescribed drug.

There were no significant differences in acceptability between different CBT delivery formats.

Improved methods to construct prediction intervals for network meta-analysis

Summary: Network meta-analysis has been widely used in evidence-based medicine to evaluate the effectiveness of multiple treatments. The prediction interval, which incorporates uncertainties and heterogeneity, is an important output of network meta-analysis. However, current standard methods based on t-distribution have been found to underestimate uncertainty in realistic situations. In this study, we propose two new methods based on bootstrap and Kenward-Roger adjustment to construct more accurate prediction intervals.

Summary: Progress in developing novel therapies for anxiety, depression, and psychosis has been slow, and predicting effective treatments for individuals remains challenging. Understanding the mechanisms of mental health conditions, developing targeted interventions, and improving diagnosis and prediction are crucial. Living systematic reviews can enhance efficiency and reduce waste in research. The Global Alliance for Living Evidence on aNxiety, depressiOn and pSychosis (GALENOS) aims to catalog and evaluate relevant scientific research, involving both human and preclinical studies, to advance mental health science. GALENOS will also facilitate collaboration and identify key research questions, accelerating the translation of discovery science into effective interventions.

Summary: The prevalence of gambling disorder is higher among homeless individuals than the general population, but the factors associated with gambling disorder in this population are not well understood. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of gambling disorder among homeless men in Osaka City. The results showed that the lifetime and past-year prevalence of gambling disorder were higher among homeless men compared to the general population. Factors associated with lifetime gambling disorder included longer duration of homelessness and more frequent experiences of homelessness.
