The effects of psychological treatments of depression in children and adolescents on response, reliable change, and deterioration: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Pim Cuijpers, Eirini Karyotaki, Marketa Ciharova, Clara Miguel, Hisashi Noma, Yvonne Stikkelbroek, John R. Weisz, Toshi A. Furukawa

Summary: Meta-analyses demonstrate the effectiveness of psychotherapies in treating depression in children and adolescents. However, more than 60% of youth receiving therapy do not respond, highlighting the need for more effective treatments and strategies.

Utility of a novel tablet computer software for memory impairment in participants with brain injuries: A randomized control trial

Junko Ishida, Toshiya Murai, Keita Ueda, Toshiaki A. Furukawa, Rumi Tanemura

Summary: This study examined the effectiveness of an ICT tool in improving memory function in individuals with brain injuries. The results showed that the ICT tool did not significantly improve memory difficulties in everyday life, but it did lead to higher scores on tests related to memory function and self-efficacy.

Trends in Prescribing Antipsychotics for Children and Adolescents in Japan: A Descriptive Epidemiological Study Using a Large-Scale Pharmacy Dataset

Sayuri Nakane, Sachiko Tanaka-Mizuno, Chika Nishiyama, Kenji Kochi, Madoka Yamamoto-Sasaki, Masato Takeuchi, Yusuke Ogawa, Yuko Doi, Masaru Arai, Yosuke Fujii, Toshiyuki Matsunaga, Toshiaki A. Furukawa, Koji Kawakami

Summary: Little is known about the prescription patterns of antipsychotic drugs among children and adolescents in Japan, particularly in outpatient settings. This study investigated the prevalence and trends of antipsychotic prescription among outpatients aged <= 17 years from 2006 to 2012. The results showed that the most common prescription pattern was second-generation antipsychotic monotherapy, with risperidone being the most frequently prescribed drug.

CBT treatment delivery formats for panic disorder: a systematic review and network meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

Davide Papola, Giovanni Ostuzzi, Federico Tedeschi, Chiara Gastaldon, Marianna Purgato, Cinzia Del Giovane, Alessandro Pompoli, Darin Pauley, Eirini Karyotaki, Marit Sijbrandij, Toshi A. Furukawa, Pim Cuijpers, Corrado Barbui

Summary: This study evaluated the comparative efficacy and acceptability of different delivery formats of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) for panic disorder. The findings suggest that face-to-face group, face-to-face individual, and guided self-help are superior to treatment as usual in terms of efficacy, while unguided self-help is not. There were no significant differences in acceptability between different CBT delivery formats.

Protocol for development of an assessment tool for competency of ECG interpretation: expert consensus by the RAND/UCLA appropriateness method and cross-sectional testing using multidimensional item response theory

Shinji Inaba, Kazumichi Yamamoto, Tomohiro Kaga, Muhammad Wannous, Masatsugu Sakata, Osamu Yamaguchi, Toshi A. Furukawa

Summary: Despite the importance of assessing ECG interpretation skills, there is currently no established universal, standardised assessment tool for ECG interpretation. This study aims to develop a set of items for estimating competency of ECG interpretation and analyze item parameters and multidimensional latent factors to develop an assessment tool. The findings will be submitted for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

Developing prediction models when there are systematically missing predictors in individual patient data meta-analysis

Michael Seo, Toshi A. Furukawa, Eirini Karyotaki, Orestis Efthimiou

Summary: Clinical prediction models are widely used in modern clinical practice. This study compares different approaches for developing prediction models when there are different sets of predictors available from multiple studies. The results show that multiple imputation methods and a new approach that synthesizes all predictions outperform a restrict predictors approach.

Dismantling and personalising task-sharing psychosocial interventions for common mental disorders: a study protocol for an individual participant data component network meta-analysis

Davide Papola, Eirini Karyotaki, Marianna Purgato, Marit Sijbrandij, Federico Tedeschi, Pim Cuijpers, Efthimiou Orestis, Toshi A. Furukawa, Vikram Patel, Corrado Barbui

Summary: Common mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety, are leading causes of disability worldwide. In low-resource settings, psychosocial interventions delivered through task-sharing modalities have been proven effective in expanding access to mental healthcare. However, the specific components of these interventions that are most efficacious in reducing symptoms of common mental disorders, and for whom, have yet to be substantiated by evidence.

Kenward-Roger-type corrections for inference methods of network meta-analysis and meta-regression

Hisashi Noma, Yasuyuki Hamura, Masahiko Gosho, Toshi A. Furukawa

Summary: Network meta-analysis is an important methodology for comparative effectiveness research. This article proposes improved inference methods using higher-order asymptotic approximations based on the Kenward and Roger approach. The proposed methods show accurate coverage properties in simulation studies and real applications.

Improved methods to construct prediction intervals for network meta-analysis

Hisashi Noma, Yasuyuki Hamura, Shonosuke Sugasawa, Toshi A. Furukawa

Summary: Network meta-analysis has been widely used in evidence-based medicine to evaluate the effectiveness of multiple treatments. The prediction interval, which incorporates uncertainties and heterogeneity, is an important output of network meta-analysis. However, current standard methods based on t-distribution have been found to underestimate uncertainty in realistic situations. In this study, we propose two new methods based on bootstrap and Kenward-Roger adjustment to construct more accurate prediction intervals.

Summary: Progress in developing novel therapies for anxiety, depression, and psychosis has been slow, and predicting effective treatments for individuals remains challenging. Understanding the mechanisms of mental health conditions, developing targeted interventions, and improving diagnosis and prediction are crucial. Living systematic reviews can enhance efficiency and reduce waste in research. The Global Alliance for Living Evidence on aNxiety, depressiOn and pSychosis (GALENOS) aims to catalog and evaluate relevant scientific research, involving both human and preclinical studies, to advance mental health science. GALENOS will also facilitate collaboration and identify key research questions, accelerating the translation of discovery science into effective interventions.

Prevalence of gambling disorder and its correlates among homeless men in Osaka city, Japan

Chiyoung Hwang, Taichi Takano, Ryuhei So, Ethan Sahker, Sho Kawakami, Charles Livingstone, Naoko Takiguchi, Masako Ono-Kihara, Masahiro Kihara, Toshi A. Furukawa

Summary: The prevalence of gambling disorder is higher among homeless individuals than the general population, but the factors associated with gambling disorder in this population are not well understood. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of gambling disorder among homeless men in Osaka City. The results showed that the lifetime and past-year prevalence of gambling disorder were higher among homeless men compared to the general population. Factors associated with lifetime gambling disorder included longer duration of homelessness and more frequent experiences of homelessness.
