This paper focuses on the chemical characterization of samples of black decorations and inscriptions, and of yellow-brown patinas collected from various panels of the ark from the chapel of Saint Anthony (Padua, Italy), using three analytical procedures based on gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Analytical pyrolysis in the presence of hexamethyldisilazane followed by gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis (Py-GC/MS) and two procedures based on gas chromatography/mass spectrometry after wet-chemical treatment of the samples (GC/MS) were chosen for the recognition of the organic substances (used originally or in the course of restoration) and of their degradation products. In terms of the two GC/MS procedures, one was used to characterize proteins, lipids, resins, waxes, bituminous materials and their degradation products, and the other to characterize saccharide materials. The three analytical procedures used enabled us to obtain information on the presence of egg proteins, lipid materials (beeswax, siccative oil and animal fatty material), saccharide materials and Pinaceae resin. Beeswax, animal fat, egg and saccharide materials have been used in the past as restoration materials, and pine resin and siccative oil were the main ingredients in the black decorations and inscriptions. Extraction of proteins and residual oil from flax (Linum usitatissimum), camelina (Camelina sativa), and sunflower (Helianthus annuus) oilseed press cakes

Elisabetta Parodi, Jacopo La Nasa, Erika Ribechini, Antonella Petri, Oreste Piccolo

Summary: This study chemically characterized flax cake, camelina cake, and sunflower cake to evaluate the composition of proteins and residual oil, and explore further technological applications for these biowastes. A deep eutectic solvent was developed as a green alternative for protein extraction, while n-hexane was used for lipid extraction. Various analytical techniques were employed to characterize the cakes and extracts. Protein extraction with the deep eutectic solvent and water precipitation yielded higher yields for flax cake and camelina cake. Different acyl glyceride profiles were identified in the residual oils extracted from the cakes.

Deterioration and discoloration of historical protective treatments on marble

Daniela Pinna, Susanna Bracci, Donata Magrini, Barbara Salvadori, Alessia Andreotti, Maria Perla Colombini

Summary: This study conducted complex research on the sources of brown discolorations that occur on marble statues of the Church of Orsanmichele in Florence, Italy. Different substances were used to treat Carrara marble model specimens in order to simulate their effects on the stone, with linseed oil, milk + linseed oil, and milk + linseed oil + ammonium oxalate showing severe color changes after aging. Additionally, the study identified the chemical products of oxidation processes induced by aging, as well as the Maillard reaction likely occurring in milk-containing specimens.

Summary: Composite materials are made by combining different substances with unique properties. Stucco, for example, is a composite material composed of aggregate, binder, and water, and can be enhanced with organic additives. The term "stucco" has different meanings in different countries, but in Italian literature, it refers to any plaster used for decorative purposes.

Lorenzo Vannoni, Silvia Pizzimenti, Giulia Caroti, Jacopo La Nasa, Celia Duce, Ilaria Bonaduce

Summary: In this study, a methodological approach for investigating the molecular features of oil paint layers upon curing was implemented using a simplified model of oil binder. Various mass spectrometric techniques were used to analyse the compounds produced during natural aging, revealing the crucial differences in stability between paint layers containing different pigments, particularly related to the cross-linked fraction.

Summary: This study reports on interdisciplinary archaeometrical analyses of objects found in the Christmas Cave, revealing the history and cultural background of the cave. The study found evidence of human occupation or visitation in the cave from around 4000 BCE to the Medieval period, including a refuge episode connected to the First Jewish Revolt. The results highlight the importance of archaeometric studies in cave environments where stratigraphy is absent.

Summary: This paper investigates the characterization and identification of metal-free leather using pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS). Thirty-three bovine split leather samples tanned with various metal-free tanning agents were analyzed, and pyrolytic markers were determined in reference materials, intermediates, and end-products. Evolved gas analysis coupled with mass spectrometry was used to compare the thermodegradative profiles of metal-free leathers and chromium tanned leather.

Summary: We used EGA-MS to analyze different varieties of ambers and obtained information on their non-polymeric and polymeric components. The results showed characteristic signals for the different fractions and allowed us to classify most of the samples. Principal component analysis differentiated between succinite and rumanite ambers. EGA-MS is a reliable technique for studying the molecular composition of ambers.

Study of thermal behavior and molecular composition of mixtures of resinous materials and beeswax found as adhesives in archaeological finds

Irene Bertelli, Marco Mattonai, Jacopo La Nasa, Erika Ribechini

Summary: In this study, the interactions between beeswax and resinous materials under heating were investigated to understand their effect on adhesive properties, and compared with archaeological samples to gain insights into ancient technological knowledge. The results suggested that thermal pre-treatment of archaeological mixtures led to the formation of hybrid species between resin diterpenes and the beeswax compounds, resulting in a material with new chemical features.

Native lignin extraction from soft- and hardwood by green and benign sub/supercritical fluid extraction methodologies

Federica Nardella, Jens Prothmann, Margareta Sandahl, Peter Spegel, Erika Ribechini, Charlotta Turner

Summary: In this study, supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and CO2-expanded liquid extraction (CXLE) were used to extract lignin from softwood and hardwood chips. Ethanol, acetone, and ethyl lactate were investigated as green organic co-solvents in the extractions. The optimized method using liquid CO2/acetone/water (10/72/18, v/v/v), at 60°C, 350 bar, 30 min, and 2 mL/min flow rate, successfully detected 13 lignin monomers and 6 lignin dimers from the hardwood chips. These results demonstrate the potential of supercritical fluids and green solvents in the mild and benign extraction of lignin from wood.

Summary: Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) is a powerful analytical technique for localizing chemicals on surfaces. A new interactive approach, called interactive mass spectrometry imaging (IMSI), has been developed using a pen-like ionization interface connected to a mass spectrometer.
