Summary: Bioretention is an important low impact development practice for urban stormwater management. The number of published articles on bioretention facilities has been increasing, with significant contributions from China. However, the impact of these articles needs to be enhanced. Recent studies focus on hydrologic and water purification effects, as well as nitrogen and phosphorus removal. Future studies should explore the interaction between fillers, microorganisms, and plants, as well as the purification mechanisms of emerging contaminants and optimization of bioretention system design parameters.
