Saliva has become an important resource for evaluating physiological and pathological conditions in humans. The use of saliva has many advantages, including the simple and non-invasive method of collection and its easy, low-cost storage. With the addition of modern techniques and chemical instrumentation equipment, there has been an increase in its use for laboratory investigations, applicable for basic and clinical analyses in the fields of medicine and dentistry. The value of these methods for the diagnosis of oral and systemic diseases has been the subject of study by several researchers with the aim of increasing its use alongside complementary exams. Effects of melatonin on insulin signaling and inflammatory pathways of rats with apical periodontitis

B. S. Tavares, T. V. S. Tsosura, M. S. L. C. Mattera, J. O. Santelli, B. E. Belardi, F. Y. Chiba, L. T. A. Cintra, C. C. Silva, D. H. Matsushita

Summary: The study confirmed the beneficial effects of melatonin supplementation on insulin sensitivity, inflammatory pathways, and insulin signaling in rats with apical periodontitis. Results indicated that melatonin can reduce inflammation caused by apical periodontitis and improve insulin signaling pathways in muscles.

Miniplates coated by plasma electrolytic oxidation improve bone healing of simulated femoral fractures on low bone mineral density rats

Freitas, Helena Bacha Lopes, Adalberto Luiz Rosa, Jairo Matozinho Cordeiro, Luan Felipe Toro, Fernando Yamamoto Chiba, Doris Hissako Matsushita, Mario Jefferson Quirino Louzada, Nilson Cristino da Cruz, Valentim A. R. Barao, Leonardo P. Faverani

Summary: This study found that the use of PEO coating in low bone mineral density rats with simulated femoral fractures can optimize bone healing, increase new bone formation, and enhance the resilience of the bone/miniplate system. This sheds new light on the treatment of osteoporotic patients with bone fractures.

Maternal Apical Periodontitis Increases Insulin Resistance and Modulates the Antioxidant Defense System in the Gastrocnemius Muscle of Adult Offspring

Thais Veronica Saori Tsosura, Rodrigo Martins dos Santos, Antonio Hernandes Chaves Neto, Fernando Yamamoto Chiba, Ana Carolina Nascimento Carnevali, Maria Sara de Lima Coutinho Mattera, Bianca Elvira Belardi, Luciano Tavares Angelo Cintra, Nathalia Evelyn da Silva Machado, Doris Hissako Matsushita

Summary: Maternal apical periodontitis is associated with decreased insulin sensitivity and changes in antioxidant activities in the gastrocnemius muscle of adult offspring. However, maternal AP does not seem to affect glycemia, carbonyl protein concentration, and the nonenzymatic total antioxidant capacity in the GM of this offspring.

Effect of maternal apical periodontitis on the final step of insulin signalling and inflammatory pathway in the adult male offspring of rats

Thais Veronica Saori Tsosura, Maria Sara de Lima Coutinho Mattera, Fernando Yamamoto Chiba, Ana Carolina ascimento Carnevali, Bianca Elvira Belardi, Rodrigo Martins Santos, Luciano Tavares Angelo Cintra, Flavia Lombardi Lopes, Natalia Francisco Scaramele, Doris Hissako Matsushita

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of maternal apical periodontitis on insulin signaling and DNA methylation in the offspring of rats. The findings suggest that maternal apical periodontitis in four teeth can impair insulin signaling in the skeletal muscle of adult male offspring. This highlights the importance of maintaining maternal oral health to prevent diseases in the adult offspring.

Summary: The study demonstrated that resistance training had positive effects on glycemia, GLUT4 content, bone mineral density, and microstructural and biomechanical properties of osteopenic and non-osteopenic diabetic rats. These effects were not observed in the control groups without resistance training.

Self-perception of oral health among tertiary-care users: quanti-qualitative analysis with chronic kidney disease patients

Marcelo Augusto Amaral, Aline Maria Malachini Miotto, Suzely Adas Saliba Moimaz, Clea Adas Saliba Garbin

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between self-perception of oral health and clinical condition among patients with CKD. The findings revealed doubts and uncertainties about current health services among these patients, as well as a high rate of dental loss and the need for complete dentures. The study suggests inequities in oral health care for chronic kidney disease patients.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the epidemiological profile of dental caries in children aged 5 and 12 years in Benguela, Angola. The results showed that the prevalence of dental caries in the permanent dentition is low, but critical in the primary dentition, especially in peri-urban areas. Limited access to dental services and lack of treatment highlight the need for public policies to promote oral health.
