Phthalate esters are among the most ubiquitous of indoor pollutants and have been associated with various adverse health effects. In the present study we assessed the cross-sectional association between eight different phthalate metabolites in urine and allergic disease in young children. As part of the Danish Indoor Environment and Children's Health study, urine samples were collected from 440 children aged 3-5 years, of whom 222 were healthy controls, 68 were clinically diagnosed with asthma, 76 with rhinoconjunctivitis and 81 with atopic dermatitis (disease subgroups are not mutually exclusive; some children had more than one disease). There were no statistically significant differences in the urine concentrations of phthalate metabolites between cases and healthy controls with the exception of MnBP and MECPP, which were higher in healthy controls compared with the asthma case group. In the crude analysis MnBP and MiBP were negatively associated with asthma. In the analysis adjusted for multiple factors, only a weak positive association between MEP in urine and atopic dermatitis was found; there were no positive associations between any phthalate metabolites in urine and either asthma or rhinoconjunctivitis. These findings appear to contradict earlier studies. Differences may be due to higher exposures to certain phthalates (e.g., BBzP) via non-dietary pathways in earlier studies, phthalates serving as surrogates for an agent associated with asthma (e.g., PVC flooring) in previous studies but not the present study or altered cleaning habits and the use of allergy friendly products by parents of children with allergic disease in the current study in contrast to studies conducted earlier. Thorner, Henrik Ullum, Sisse R. Ostrowski, Klaus Rostgaard, Carsten B. Pedersen, Torben Sigsgaard, Christian Erikstrup

Summary: Through a study of more than 120,000 Danish blood donors, it was found that smoking is closely related to an increased risk of infection, especially respiratory tract infection, abscesses, and skin infection. These findings indicate that we should pay more attention to the infection risk among smokers.

Higher Maternal Cortisol Associated With Lower Blood Pressure in Offspring From 3 Months to 5 Years of Age in the Odense Child Cohort

Summary: This study investigated the association between maternal cortisol levels in the third trimester of pregnancy and offspring blood pressure (OBP). The results showed negative associations between maternal cortisol levels and OBP, specifically in boys. This suggests that maternal cortisol is not a risk factor for higher blood pressure in offspring up to the age of 5.

Summary: As part of the European Human Biomonitoring Initiative, a human biomonitoring survey was conducted in 23 countries to produce comparable data for the EU. The survey utilized existing HBM capacity in Europe and aligned national or regional studies under the HBM4EU program. The survey included over 10,000 participants from different age groups and measured various biomarkers to assess exposure levels to different chemicals. The data obtained can be used as a reference for global comparison, evaluate the effectiveness of the European Commission's chemical strategy, and guide policy-making.

Summary: Phthalates are widely used as plasticizers for PVC and are associated with adverse effects on the reproductive system. The HBM4EU Aligned Studies have investigated the exposure to ten phthalates and the substitute chemical DINCH in European children and adolescents. The study provides detailed data on exposure levels and differences across European regions, as well as comparisons to biomonitoring guidance values.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of CO2 during sleep on next-morning cognitive performance in young schoolchildren. The results showed no significant impact of CO2 on cognitive performance during sleep, but a slightly lower sleep efficiency was observed with high CO2 concentrations. Therefore, replication studies in actual bedrooms controlling for other external factors are needed to draw more general conclusions.

Summary: This prospective observational study aimed to evaluate the association between maternal third trimester cortisol and early longitudinal offspring language development, and to test whether there were sex differences in the association. The results showed that higher maternal cortisol levels in the third trimester were positively associated with early language development in children, with boys showing effects on productive vocabulary and girls showing effects on receptive vocabulary.

Summary: This study investigated the association between prenatal and concurrent exposure to phthalates and IQ in 7-year-old children. The results showed that high concentrations of metabolites of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate were associated with decreased IQ in children. This suggests that exposure to phthalates may be harmful to child neurodevelopment.
