Schistosomiasis Among Female Migrants in Non-endemic Countries: Neglected Among the Neglected? A Pilot Study

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the clinical manifestations of Schistosoma infection among migrant women and determine the degree of underdiagnosis. The results showed a high prevalence of schistosomiasis infection among migrant women, particularly female genital schistosomiasis, and a low diagnosis rate.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) and HIV-1 infection, measuring the expression levels of cytokines and chemokines. The results suggest that FGS may alter the immune environment of the female genital tract and be associated with HIV-1 vulnerability. Further research in areas with varying endemicity is needed to evaluate this association.

Summary: Our study highlights limited awareness and knowledge of FGS among different populations in the highly endemic Boeny region of Madagascar. This identifies an important health gap that exists in Madagascar regarding a disease that can silently impact millions of women worldwide. Addressing schistosomiasis requires a paradigm shift for its control and management, with a greater emphasis on the chronic forms of the disease.

Healthcare Workers' Low Knowledge of Female Genital Schistosomiasis and Proposed Interventions to Prevent, Control, and Manage the Disease in Zanzibar

Summary: This study explores healthcare workers' knowledge of female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) and proposes interventions to raise awareness about FGS and improve healthcare facilities' capacity in managing FGS cases. The findings show that most healthcare workers have limited knowledge of FGS and lack skills to handle it. They often confuse FGS with urogenital schistosomiasis and misunderstand its mode of transmission. To address this, interventions targeting communities (such as community-based health education) and the healthcare system (such as training healthcare workers on FGS) are recommended to prevent and control FGS.

Conservation Implications of Sabellaria spinulosa Reef Patches in a Dynamic Sandy-Bottom Environment

Summary: The study found that the habitat distribution of Sabellaria spinulosa reefs is patchy, alternating with habitats of plain sand. Unlike endobenthos communities, epifauna density and species richness were at least doubled in S. spinulosa habitats compared to sandy habitats, leading to different community compositions between the two habitat types.

Summary: Handheld devices have potential for diagnosis in female genital schistosomiasis (FGS), with Gynocular and Mobile ODT identified as potentially adequate for FGS diagnosis. However, smartphones and digital cameras lack sufficient magnification to diagnose grainy sandy patches, one of the FGS lesion types. Customized software is needed to support the diagnosis of both FGS and cervical neoplasia in low-resource settings.

Female Genital Mutilation and Cutting and Obstetric Outcomes

Summary: This prospective study investigated the association between type III female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) and de-infibulation and immediate maternal and neonatal outcomes. The findings showed a higher incidence of postpartum hemorrhage and mediolateral episiotomy in women with type III FGM/C. Mediolateral episiotomy was associated with a decreased rate of perineal lacerations in women with type III FGM/C who underwent de-infibulation.

Summary: This study found high prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis and genital symptoms in girls and young women in certain areas of South Africa, and suggested that antischistosomal mass drug administration could prevent and reduce these symptoms in these populations. Furthermore, it is estimated that such treatment and prevention measures could potentially prevent thousands of HIV infections in adolescent girls and young women.

Further research is needed to explore potential interactions between parasites, particularly in relation to HIV-1 vulnerability.

The perceptions of female genital self-image and its associations with female sexual distress

Summary: This study evaluated the perception of women in Puerto Rico regarding their genitalia and its association with sexual distress. Findings showed that many women were dissatisfied with the size of their genitalia, leading some to consider cosmetic surgery for improvement. The results indicated that a better genital self-image perception might reduce levels of sexual distress.

Summary: Parasites are important pathogens with significant impacts, and the use of environmental DNA (eDNA) methods for monitoring and controlling parasitic diseases is still in the exploratory stage. The current challenges include incomplete reference databases and difficulties in real-time monitoring in remote and low-income settings. There are still opportunities in the future to further develop the application of eDNA methods for monitoring and controlling parasitic diseases and vectors.
