Pesticides have been applied in vineyards around the world in order to protect grapevines against different diseases. However, the indiscriminate use of these substances has aroused great concern regarding the health and safety of consumers due to toxicological risks that pesticides may present to human health. Thus, this study aims to determine simultaneously eighteen pesticide residues from different chemical classes in real white wine and rose wine samples using single-drop microextraction (SDME), followed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The step of SDME was optimized, and it was found that the best experimental conditions were as follows: toluene, 30 mm extraction, 1.0 mu L drop volume, solution volume 10 mL, stirring speed 200 rpm, with acidification of the medium with HCl and without the addition of salt. The proposed extraction method was efficient for the extraction of pesticides, both from aqueous solutions and from alcoholic solutions, with an ethanol concentration of up to 15%. The method was applied to real white wine and rose wine samples, and 11 pesticide residues were detected (carbofuran, molinate, diazinon, disulfoton, malathion, endosulfan, ethion, bifenthrin, permethrin I, permethrin II and azoxystrobin) with concentrations, which ranged from not detected to 65.3 mu g L-1. Fabio N. dos Santos, Madson M. Nascimento, Gisele O. da Rocha, Jailson B. de Andrade

Summary: We used MALDI-MS to investigate if pristine and functionalized fullerenes could be constituents of atmospheric aerosols. We identified several fullerene species, including C-60 and C-70, using matrix laser desorption ionization. The presence of these fullerenes as original constituents of atmospheric particles suggests their potential role in atmospheric chemistry and toxicity studies.

Stingless bee propolis: composition, biological activities and its applications in the food industry

Vitor Moreira Rocha, Ricardo Dias Portela, Jeancarlo Pereira dos Anjos, Carolina Oliveira de Souza, Marcelo Andres Umsza-Guez

Summary: Meliponiculture, the breeding of stingless bees, is globally practiced and has a historical connection to early human communities in the Americas. The propolis produced by these bees, a resinous material, holds industrial interest due to its variability and potential applications in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. The primary focus is on the phenolic compounds in propolis, which have antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. While propolis from stingless bees is mostly recognized for its antioxidant potential, further studies can explore its potential in other sectors, similar to the propolis produced by Apis mellifera. This research presents the composition and biological activities of stingless bee propolis, as well as its potential applications in the food industry.

Summary: Carbonyl compounds can be formed during craft beer production process, affecting sensory properties and posing a risk to health due to their toxicity. This study quantified 15 carbonyl compounds in craft beers, both in free and bound forms, using hydrolysis and derivatization reactions. The presence of acrolein, benzaldehyde, heptanal, and formaldehyde in craft beers suggests potential undesirable flavors. Frequent consumption of craft beers containing these carbonyl compounds could be harmful to health.

Dispersive micro-solid phase extraction based on graphene oxide for the ultrasensitive determination of Cd by slurry sampling microplasma optical emission spectrometry

Summary: For the first time, a dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (D-mu SPE) based on graphene oxide was used for the ultrasensitive determination of Cd. With this method, Cd can be efficiently extracted from a mixture of alkali and alkaline earth metals without the need for an elution step. The combination of D-mu SPE and SAGD OES significantly reduces matrix effects and improves the tolerance of Cd to alkali metals. The method shows simplicity in the measurement system and the commercially available nanosorbent used.

Summary: This work proposes a rapid and sensitive spectroscopic method for detecting melamine in food products using rare-earth Terbium-doped Graphene Quantum Dots (Tb-GQDs) synthesized by microwave and simple chemical conjugation methods. The synthesized Tb-GQDs show a spherical shape with a size of approximately 6 nm and a quantum yield of 52%. The maximum detection limit for melamine concentration in milk and milk products is found to be 0.31 μM. The dual emitting Tb-GQDs provide a sensitive and effective platform for real-time detection of melamine in food samples, particularly in milk, and show promising potential in the food industry.
