Associations between depressive symptom profiles and immunometabolic characteristics in individuals with depression and their siblings

Hilde de Kluiver, Yuri Milaneschi, Rick Jansen, Eleonore D. van Sprang, Erik J. Giltay, Catharina A. Hartman, Brenda W. J. H. Penninx

Summary: The study found that in individuals with lifetime diagnoses of depression and/or anxiety disorders and their siblings, BMI and waist circumference were associated with somatic and atypical-like symptom profiles, while other immunometabolic characteristics were significantly related to depressive symptom profiles. However, there was no apparent familial link between depressive symptom profiles and immunometabolic characteristics.

The incidence and economic impact of aggression in closed long-stay psychiatric wards

Nienke J. de Bles, Andreia W. P. Hazewinkel, Jan P. A. M. Bogers, Wilbert B. van den Hout, Constant Mouton, Albert M. van Hemert, Nathaly Rius Ottenheim, Erik J. Giltay

Summary: This study found a high rate of aggression incidents in closed long-stay psychiatric wards, with scarce reports of aggression on these types of wards. Nevertheless, aggression seems to have a severe impact on invested time and related costs, suggesting a need for aggression-prevention and de-escalating programs.

Anger and cluster B personality traits and the conversion from unipolar depression to bipolar disorder

Rahele Mesbah, Nienke de Bles, Nathaly Rius-Ottenheim, A. J. Willem van der Does, Brenda W. J. H. Penninx, Albert M. van Hemert, Max de Leeuw, Erik J. Giltay, Manja Koenders

Summary: Feelings of anger and irritability are prominent symptoms of bipolar disorder (BD), and individuals with a history of unipolar depression who convert to BD tend to exhibit higher levels of trait anger, aggression reactivity, and anger-related constructs compared to those who do not convert.

Metabolomic profiles discriminating anxiety from depression

Hilde de Kluiver, Rick Jansen, Yuri Milaneschi, Mariska Bot, Erik J. Giltay, Robert Schoevers, Brenda W. J. H. Penninx

Summary: Depression has distinct metabolomic alterations, including inflammatory and atherogenic-lipoprotein-related profiles, compared to anxiety disorders. The majority of metabolites associated with depression diagnosis are also linked to depression severity. No metabolomic alterations were found in the group with only anxiety disorders, suggesting a unique association of altered metabolomic profiles with depression rather than anxiety disorders.

Summary: This paper describes the challenges and practical lessons learned from two RCTs conducted in care settings. It highlights five main difficulties encountered and how they were overcome. By sharing these experiences, the aim is to assist other researchers in designing optimal trials and facilitate their implementation.

Metabolomics signatures of depression: the role of symptom profiles

Hilde de Kluiver, Rick Jansen, Brenda W. J. H. Penninx, Erik J. J. Giltay, Robert A. A. Schoevers, Yuri Milaneschi

Summary: Depression overlaps with cardiometabolic conditions in terms of metabolomic signature. The metabolomic signature is linked to atypical depression profiles characterized by energy alterations. This specific clustering of metabolomic signature with clinical profile identifies a subgroup of depressed patients at higher cardiometabolic risk, potentially serving as a valuable target for interventions to reduce the detrimental impact of depression on health.

Childhood trauma and anger in adults with and without depressive and anxiety disorders

N. J. de Bles, L. E. H. Puetz, N. Rius Ottenheim, A. M. van Hemert, B. M. Elzinga, B. W. J. H. Penninx, E. J. Giltay

Summary: Childhood trauma is associated with anger in adulthood, and all types of childhood trauma are related to borderline personality traits. It is important to focus on childhood traumatic experiences and adult anger to improve treatment outcomes for patients with depressive and anxiety disorders.

Breaking the cycle: Identifying key symptom pathways of eating disorders and the influence of childhood maltreatment

Maren C. G. Kopland, Karianne Vrabel, Margarita Slof-Op't Landt, Asle Hoffart, Sverre Urnes Johnson, Erik J. Giltay

Summary: The study utilized dynamic time warping analysis to investigate central change processes in therapy in a transdiagnostic sample, revealing the importance of targeting and monitoring feelings and cognitions related to shape for lasting symptom improvement. Furthermore, it highlighted the need for further investigation into the impact of childhood maltreatment on eating disorders to provide more insights for therapy.

Eating disorder psychopathology dimensions based on individual co-occurrence patterns of symptoms over time: a dynamic time warp analysis in a large naturalistic patient cohort

Margarita C. T. Slof-Op't Landt, Alexandra E. E. Dingemans, Erik J. J. Giltay

Summary: The study utilized a non-linear approach, dynamic time warp, to analyze the co-occurrence patterns of eating disorder symptoms and identified four robust symptom dimensions at the group level: restraint/rules, secret eating/fasting, worries/preoccupation, and weight and shape concern. 'Fear of weight gain' and 'guilt' were identified as bridge symptoms between different dimensions. The dynamic time warp method captured the intra-individual dynamics of eating disorder symptoms and could potentially be used to monitor patients over time and visualize symptom dynamics within individuals and patient groups.
