This article proposed the combination of cumulative exergy extraction from the natural environment and extended exergy analysis to analyse international environmental performance in agricultural production. The unified approach allowed the cumulative analysis of total extraction of all types of resources and services from the ecosystem in agriculture. The analysis, therefore, enabled a more accurate comparison of the environmental performance of different countries or systems based on different indicators of sustainability. The application was conducted for 29 OECD countries for the years from 1990 to 2003 with some important findings. First, the organic contents in topsoil, feed and total water withdrawal were the three types of resources that agricultural production extracted most from the environment. Second, during the 14 years surveyed, the efficiency of using exergy in the livestock sector was much lower than the efficiency in the crop sector. Third, the environmental loading of economic investment had increased slightly, implying a minor increase in the pressure on the environment overtime. In addition, the empirical study on OECD countries confirmed that rankings varied widely based on different indicators. The empirical results gave some evidence to support the use of non-renewability yield ratio, firstly defined in this paper, because the rankings based on this indicator was more consistent with many other indicators. Trade-off analysis of cost and nutrient efficiency of coffee farms in vietnam: A more generalised approach

Thong Quoc Ho, Viet-Ngu Hoang, Clevo Wilson

Summary: Literature has documented significant trade-offs between economic and environmental performance in many areas of agricultural production. The paper proposes a more generalised approach to analysing cost and environmental trade-offs and investigates a dataset of Vietnamese coffee farms to find distinct groups of farms facing different types of trade-offs. Certified sustainable farms perform better than non-certified farms, but the differences diminish over time, indicating a need for a more integrated policy approach to improve efficiency in Vietnam's coffee farming sector.

Do trends in Bangladeshi rice yields support Conway's hypotheses about the consequences of modern agroecosystems?

Mohammad Alauddin, Clement Tisdell, Md. Abdur Rashid Sarker

Summary: This paper examines the applicability of Gordon Conway's hypotheses on modern agroecosystems to rice yields in Bangladesh. The findings show that rice yields substantially increased after the Green Revolution, but have now reached a plateau. The sustainability of yields is at risk, while variability has decreased relative to pre-Green Revolution levels.

An analysis of the impact of clean and non-clean energy consumption on economic growth and carbon emission: evidence from PIMC countries

Arshad Ali, Magdalena Radulescu, Daniel Balsalobre Lorente, Viet-Ngu Vincent Hoang

Summary: This study empirically estimates the impact of clean and non-clean energy consumption on economic growth and carbon dioxide emissions in Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs) from 1980 to 2019. The results suggest that both types of energy consumption significantly affect economic growth, with carbon emissions hindering growth. Clean energy consumption is found to reduce carbon emissions. The study also confirms the existence of the inverted U-shaped environmental Kuznets curve and pollution haven hypothesis in PICTs.

Sustainability certification and water efficiency in coffee farming: The role of irrigation technologies

Thong Quoc Ho, Viet-Ngu Hoang, Clevo Wilson

Summary: The unsustainable use of irrigation water in coffee farming is a serious environmental problem. This study found that irrigation water efficiency is low in Vietnamese coffee farms. There is no evidence that sustainability certifications have an effect on water efficiency, but advanced irrigation technologies can improve it. Farms using the sprinkler system are more efficient than those using micro-basin irrigation technology. The presence of wind-break trees on coffee farms also supports environmentally friendly practices. Improving the quality of sustainability certification schemes requires the adoption of water-saving technologies.

The relative roles of domestic and foreign capital in aggregate production of GDP and CO2-equivalent emission across OECD countries

Chon Van Le, Tuan Anh Luong, Manh-Hung Nguyen, Viet-Ngu Hoang

Summary: This paper uses a two-stage stochastic frontier analysis framework to examine the roles of foreign and domestic capital in the aggregate production of GDP and CO2-equivalent emissions across 36 OECD countries from 1990 to 2014. The study finds that foreign capital is more effective than domestic capital in generating GDP and reducing CO2-equivalent emissions. Additionally, it reveals that foreign capital is particularly effective in reducing emissions in countries with higher GDP per capita, larger population density, and higher shares of manufacturing sectors and exports.
