The petrography, heavy mineral analysis, major element geochemical compositions and mineral chemistry of Early Cretaceous to Miocene-Pliocene rocks, and recent sediments of the Tarfaya basin, SW Morocco, have been studied to reveal their depositional tectonic setting, weathering history, and provenance. Bulk sediment compositional and mineral chemical data suggest that these rocks were derived from heterogeneous sources in the Reguibat Shield (West African Craton) including the Mauritanides and the western Anti-Atlas, which likely form the basement in this area. The Early Cretaceous sandstones are subarkosic in composition, while the Miocene-Pliocene sandstones and the recent sediments from Wadis are generally carbonate-rich feldspathic or lithic arenites, which is also reflected in their major element geochemical compositions. The studied samples are characterized by moderate SiO2 contents and variable abundances of Al2O3, K2O, Na2O, and ferromagnesian elements. Binary tectonic discrimination diagrams demonstrate that most samples can be characterized as passive continental marginal deposits. Al2O3/Na2O ratios indicate more intense chemical weathering during the Early Cretaceous and a variable intensity of weathering during the Late Cretaceous, Early Eocene, Oligocene-Early Miocene, Miocene-Pliocene and recent times. Moreover, weathered marls of the Late Cretaceous and Miocene-Pliocene horizons also exhibit relatively low but variable intensity of chemical weathering. Our results indicate that siliciclastics of the Early Cretaceous were primarily derived from the Reguibat Shield and the Mauritanides, in the SW of the basin, whereas those of the Miocene-Pliocene had varying sources that probably included western Anti-Atlas (NE part of the basin) in addition to the Reguibat Shield and the Mauritanides.

Persistent Provenance of South Asian Monsoon-Induced Silicate Weathering Over the Past 27 Million Years

Sajid Ali, Ed C. Hathorne, Martin Frank

Summary: This study used radiogenic isotope data to analyze the weathering process induced by the South Asian monsoon over the past 27 million years, showing a consistent source mixture dominated by Himalayan rocks and the Indo-Burman ranges. The significant increase in primary clay mineral abundance during the late Miocene cooling period suggests a shift in the weathering regime, possibly due to increased aridity and changes in atmospheric circulation.

Summary: Many terrestrial silicate reservoirs show depleted Nb content, which is explained by the presence of reservoirs on Earth with superchondritic Nb/Ta. K-rich lavas from the Indonesian Sunda rear-arc have been used as an example to tap into these high-Nb/Ta reservoirs. In this study, samples from the Javanese rear-arc volcano Muria were analyzed to understand the petrogenetic processes and causes for the superchondritic Nb/Ta in these lavas. Data from an along-arc sequence of lavas from the Indonesian part of the Sunda arc were also included. Major and trace element concentrations, isotope compositions, and HFSE concentrations were analyzed. The geochemical data, combined with melting models, show regional variations in subduction components along the arc, with sediment-derived components affecting the HFSE budget of the frontal arc lavas and more hybrid and enriched mantle sources contributing to the K-rich rear-arc lavas. The superchondritic Nb/Ta in the rear-arc lavas are attributed to deep melting involving slab melts formed from an enriched garnet-rutile-bearing eclogitic residue. Sub-arc slab melting may have been triggered along a slab tear beneath the Sunda arc, coinciding with a paucity in arc volcanism and thrusting of the Javanese basement crust.

A Reference Section Through Fast-Spread Lower Oceanic Crust, Wadi Gideah, Samail Ophiolite (Sultanate of Oman): Petrography and Petrology

J. Koepke, D. Garbe-Schoenberg, T. Mueller, D. Mock, S. Mueller, S. Nasir

Summary: In this study, a reference profile of the Samail ophiolite was established to mimic fast-spreading oceanic crust on land, providing insights into the formation mechanisms and mineral compositions of the lower crust gabbros. The results suggest a hybrid accretion mechanism with injection of melt sills and in situ crystallization, as well as a trend of upward differentiation in the lower two thirds of the crust. The upper third of the gabbroic crust is significantly more differentiated, indicating a model of downward differentiation from a primitive parental melt.

Summary: Due to the inaccessibility of oceanic crust, there is no complete data set available for the composition of modern fast-spreading oceanic crust. However, through sampling in the Oman Ophiolite, we were able to observe systematic and contrasting compositional trends in lower and upper gabbros, correlated with stratigraphic depth. A discontinuity in crystallization regime was observed at a certain depth, leading to different compositions. This study provides new insights into the composition of fast-spreading oceanic crust.

Heavy metal contamination assessment and its associated human health risk evaluation in the Mahanadi River sediments, India

P. Samal, S. R. Singarasubramanian, M. C. Manoj, J. Srivastava, N. Dsouza, K. Balakrishna, M. M. Chauhan, S. Ali

Summary: The deltaic areas of the Mahanadi River basin are at risk of contamination from sewage, industrial waste, and agricultural runoff. A study on the sediment in the region revealed high levels of heavy metal pollution, with cobalt and lead concentrations exceeding the global average values. This pollution is likely anthropogenic, possibly from the heavy use of pesticides in agricultural land. The study also found a mild carcinogenic risk for children due to chromium exposure.

Geochemical evidence for the provenance, tectonic settings and depositional environment during the Cambrian Series 2-Wuliuan (Miaolingian) from the Kunzam La Formation in the Sumna Valley, Spiti, NW Himalaya

Garry Singla, Sajid Ali, Birendra P. Singh, Om N. Bhargava, Scott Morrison, Ramanpreet Kaur, Madhusudhan Sati, Stanzin Stopden

Summary: This study presents trace-element compositions and rare-earth elements (REEs) analyses of the Cambrian Series 2-Wuliuan (Miaolingian), Kunzam La Formation from the Sumna Valley in the Tethyan Himalaya. The results indicate that the sediments in the Sumna Valley were derived from a felsic source and were deposited in a passive continental margin tectonic setting. The deposition process was under oxidizing conditions and the sedimentary site was close to a near-shore environment. Additionally, a major transgressive event was identified at the boundary of the Cambrian Series 2-Wuliuan (Miaolingian) associated with the Oryctocephalus indicus biozone.

Summary: The study reconstructs past sea surface temperatures in the central Indian Ocean using coral Sr/Ca records from the Chagos Archipelago, showing that ENSO drives interannual variability in coral records and the ENSO-SST teleconnection has been stable since the 17th century. Composite records of positive and negative ENSO-driven SST anomaly events reveal a symmetric ENSO response in the tropical Indian Ocean.
