Summary: A study conducted in a pediatric clinic in Cali, Colombia, identified CHIKV as the arbovirus causing febrile cases in children, potentially leading to double infections. The results emphasize the importance of clinical tests to determine the arbovirus involved in infectious diseases for better treatment and surveillance.

Summary: An outbreak of Chikungunya fever occurred in Ruili, Yunnan Province from September to December 2019, with a total of 112 confirmed cases, including 91 local cases and 21 imported cases. Female patients outnumbered male patients, and common symptoms included joint pain, fever, fatigue, chills, rash, and headache. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the CHIKV strains in this outbreak belonged to the Indian Ocean clade of the East/Central/South African genotype.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review of 27 studies and identified the main oral manifestations related to Chikungunya fever, including ulcers, oral thrush, gingival bleeding, oral mucous membrane pain and burning, TMJ arthralgia, opportunistic infections, and changes in taste. The findings suggest a predominance of oral manifestations causing discomfort during chewing, with most affecting women and older persons, and resolving within 3 to 10 days after onset.

Summary: CHIKV infection is endemic in many countries, posing a challenge to vaccine testing and evaluation, particularly in children where infections are often clinically inapparent. This study found significant differences in IgG binding and neutralizing antibody responses between CHIKV-infected children and those with other illnesses, highlighting the importance of further research in understanding early IgG responses.

Summary: In this article, the epidemiology and pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease are reviewed, along with its association with cutaneous symptoms. The diagnosis and evaluation of cutaneous features of cardiovascular syndromes, such as infective endocarditis, amyloidosis, and cardiac myxomas, are also discussed. Dermatologists play a crucial role in recognizing the cutaneous manifestations of cardiovascular diseases in order to connect patients with proper follow-up care as the incidence and prevalence of cardiovascular diseases increase.

Summary: We report an isolated outbreak of Rickettsia rickettsii in a jungle and mountainous area of Western Panama, where seven members of a family were simultaneously infected, resulting in four deaths. Previous studies have described family outbreaks as responsible for 4-8% of the cases, and the simultaneous onset of symptoms in the affected population group is extremely unusual, but should not be disregarded by clinicians in considering Rickettsia rickettsii infection.

Summary: The Chikungunya virus is a mosquito-borne pathogen that has become a major public health concern globally. An outbreak in Thailand from 2008 to 2009 resulted in around 20,000 confirmed cases, but the reasons for the re-emergence of the virus remain unclear. Analysis of CHIKV isolates in Thailand revealed specific mutations in the virus, providing detailed information on its characteristics and evolution for prevention and control strategies.

Summary: The study found that chikungunya virus transmission was higher in the southern, western, and northern regions of India compared to the eastern and northeastern regions. However, a higher proportion of the population susceptible to CHIKV in the eastern and northeastern regions suggests a vulnerability to outbreaks in the future. The survey findings will be beneficial in identifying target age groups and locations for surveillance and future CHIKV vaccine trials.

Summary: The study describes the epidemiology of the 2017 chikungunya outbreak in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and uses household survey and mobile phone data analysis to show that population mobility plays an important role in disease transmission, with travel during holidays potentially spreading the infection nationally. Results highlight the impact of large-scale population movements, especially during holidays, on the spread of infectious diseases.

Summary: Cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa (cPAN) is a skin-limited vasculitis with histopathological features indistinguishable from PAN. The revised Chapel Hill Classification recognized cutaneous arteritis (CA) as the same disease as cPAN and discovered that some CA cases were related to deficiency of adenosine deaminase 2 (DADA2). CA can be classified as an immune complex-mediated vasculitis, and the main skin manifestations include livedo racemosa, subcutaneous nodules, and ulcers. Cases with ulcers or sensory neuropathies may require more intensive therapies.

Summary: The article describes the 2019 outbreak of chikungunya virus in Maldives, the second-largest since the 2004 Indian Ocean epidemic. The re-emergence of the virus is linked to a genomic polymorphism that has increased vector susceptibility. Research also found that some children had severe infections while arthritis primarily occurred in adults.

Summary: An outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in a small-scale pig unit in Gauteng Province was linked to a neighboring ASF outbreak in Mpumalanga Province through molecular typing. Inadequate biosecurity measures may have facilitated viral transmission, highlighting the importance of targeted ASF awareness and education campaigns for small-scale pig keepers. Innovative and cost-effective biosecurity solutions are needed in resource-limited settings to prevent future outbreaks.
