Summary: The research shows that olfaction can modulate low-level perception of other sensory modalities without specific training, as demonstrated through psychophysical and neuroimaging experiments. Results suggest that the olfactory-visual effect is an innate behavior rather than an acquired one, providing new insights into the fundamental roles of olfactory function.

Summary: Patients experience olfactory dysfunction after laryngectomy, and the odour-blowing test is superior to the odour-sniffing test in detecting residual olfaction. Simply blowing a scent is insufficient to obtain good olfaction; active airflow is crucial for recognizing odours.

Summary: This paper explores the issue of contextual variation in smell objectivism, using dihydromyrcenol as an example to illustrate the differences in how the same smell can be perceived in different contexts. By analyzing comparative characterizations and the quality of perception in different contexts, it is concluded that different reports can accurately depict the same smell.

Summary: Long-term follow-up studies have shown that COVID-19 patients with olfactory and gustatory disorders experience a decrease in health-related quality of life. These disorders can persist for over a year and affect daily activities, nutrition, and mood. It is recommended to involve ear-nose-throat specialists in post-COVID clinics to address these issues.

Summary: The study developed a simple and one-off olfactory screening test, the sniffing bead system, for general clinical use in older adults. The results showed that the scores of the sniffing bead system were significantly correlated with various olfactory function tests, indicating its potential for rapid and accurate assessment of olfactory dysfunction.

Summary: The human sense of smell plays a crucial role in appetite, detecting threats, social interactions, and memory processing. In this study, we used a novel dMRI method to investigate the connectivity of the human olfactory tracts. Our results revealed an association between the structural integrity of the olfactory tracts and olfactory perceptual function.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the applicability of Sniffin' Sticks Identification test and Self-MOQ as a screening tool for olfactory dysfunction. The participants were normosmic volunteers and their olfactory function was assessed using the Self-Reported Mini-Olfactory Questionnaire and Sniffin' Sticks test. The study found that most of the subjects enrolled in the study failed to reach the normative standard for their age groups in the Sniffin' Sticks test. It is suggested to delete or replace items with extremely low correct identification rates and physicians should test the applicability in advance to avoid misdiagnosis.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of bariatric surgery on olfactory changes in the short postoperative period. The results showed a deterioration of odor threshold in the bariatric surgery group compared to the control group 24 hours after surgery, with this change primarily occurring in patients undergoing LSG.

Summary: While there is a growing philosophical interest in analyzing olfactory experiences, the mereological structure of odours considered in respect of how they are perceptually experienced has not yet been extensively investigated. The paper argues that odours are perceptually experienced as having a mereological structure, but this structure is significantly different from the spatial mereological structure of visually experienced objects.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate whether the short formed Sniffin Sticks Parosmia Test (SSParoT) could distinguish cases with parosmia from cases without parosmia. The results showed that the short SSParoT score could not effectively differentiate between these two groups of patients. Only the odor identification score was able to distinguish the presence or absence of parosmia.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed all patients who received radiotherapy for advanced adrenocortical carcinoma in five European centers since 2000. The results showed that radiotherapy is effective in adrenocortical carcinoma, and higher doses of radiotherapy are associated with longer time to progression of the treated lesion. The toxicity of radiotherapy was generally mild, and no clear predictive factors could be established.

Summary: Recent advances in omics techniques have allowed detailed genetic characterization of cortisol-producing adrenal adenoma (CPA). The current study conducted a comprehensive mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) map of CPAs in relation to clinical phenotypes and immunohistochemical profiles of steroidogenic enzymes. The results revealed novel metabolic links between endocrine function and tumorigenesis, which will further support the understanding of CPA pathophysiology.

Summary: This study analyzed the baseline characteristics, disease severity, and operations performed on people with obesity and T2DM undergoing bariatric-metabolic surgery in the NHS. The study found that bariatric-metabolic surgery is used for people with T2DM much later in the disease process when it is less effective. National guidance and data from RCTs have had little impact on clinical practice.

Summary: Parathyroid carcinoma is a rare endocrine malignancy, accounting for about 1% of primary hyperparathyroidism cases. A systematic review of literature was conducted to analyze data on parathyroid carcinoma patients, including molecular pathogenesis, clinical presentation, treatment, and overall survival. The review included 75 studies from 17 countries, covering over 3000 patients. CDC73 mutation plays a pivotal role in the molecular pathogenesis of parathyroid carcinoma. En bloc resection is the recommended surgical approach, and targeted therapy based on molecular biomarkers shows promise as a novel treatment option.

Summary: Although the metabolic changes caused by bariatric surgery are known, it is unclear if these changes are specific to the surgery itself or a result of weight loss. A study using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry found that Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) surgery resulted in distinct changes in the metabolome, which were different from those observed in non-surgical intervention groups.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether the elevation in postprandial concentrations of gut hormones accounts for the beneficial changes in food preferences, sweet taste function, and eating behavior after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). A randomized single-blind study was conducted, where GLP-1, OXM, PYY (GOP) or saline was infused for 4 weeks in subjects with obesity and prediabetes/diabetes. The results showed that GOP treatment reduced daily energy intake by 27% and restraint eating was significantly reduced, but no significant changes in food preferences, sweet taste function, and consummatory reward value of sweet taste were observed.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis found that patients with adrenal incidentalomas and mild autonomous cortisol secretion (MACS) have a higher prevalence of comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, as well as increased all-cause mortality. Adrenalectomy appears to improve glucometabolic control, hypertension, and dyslipidemia in patients with MACS.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of adrenal tumors in relation to sex and adrenal asymmetry. It was found that females were more prone to adrenal cortical carcinoma, aldosterone-producing adenoma, and cortisol-secreting adrenocortical adenomas, while males were more prone to pheochromocytoma. Adrenal tumors were more commonly located on the left side, except for pheochromocytoma which was more commonly on the right. Additionally, females had smaller adrenals compared to males.

Summary: Obesity requires a long-term multimodal approach, starting with lifestyle intervention and potentially combining medication and surgery. This article provides an overview of conservative medicinal treatment regimens, approved medications, and ongoing studies, emphasizing the importance of combination treatment. Data suggests that a multimodal approach can lead to long-term weight loss and metabolic benefits for patients.
