Summary: This study compared the pathological/oncological outcomes, toxicity, and quality of life results between long-course radiation therapy (LC-CRT) and intermediate-course radiation therapy (IC-CRT) in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer. The results showed no significant differences in pathological outcomes or 5-year overall survival rates between the two groups. However, the LC-CRT group had significantly higher rates of acute radiation dermatitis and hematological toxicity.

Summary: This study compared the safety and efficacy of local excision with surgical resection in early-stage rectal adenocarcinoma. The results showed that although local excision had a higher margin-positive resection rate, it allowed for accelerated postprocedure recovery and comparable overall survival.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the relationship between neoadjuvant mFOLFOX6 with or without preoperative radiotherapy and therapeutic efficacy in locally advanced rectal mucinous adenocarcinoma (RMAC). The results showed that the mFOLFOX6 plus radiation group had higher rates of sphincter preservation, pathological complete response, and tumor response compared to the mFOLFOX6 alone group.

Summary: The addition of regional hyperthermia to standard preoperative chemoradiotherapy improves the complete response rate and long-term recurrence-free survival in locally advanced and recurrent rectal cancer. Hyperthermia plays an important role in increasing tumor regression and reducing the risk of recurrence.

Summary: This study compared the adherence to guidelines for perioperative chemotherapy in non-Hispanic White and Black patients with gastric adenocarcinoma. The results showed that Black race was associated with a lower likelihood of receiving preoperative chemotherapy compared to White race. Factors such as age, sex, treatment facility, insurance status, and disease stage were associated with the likelihood of receiving preoperative chemotherapy.

Summary: This study evaluated the value of ultrasonography in preoperative T staging of rectal cancer and the effect of psychological nursing and colostomy nursing in patients with rectal cancer after colostomy. The results showed that the ultrasound stage was consistent with the pathological stage in 76% of cases, and the invasion diameter was related to staging. In the nursing group, the degree of depression and anxiety significantly improved, the quality of life score was higher, and the self-care ability and nursing satisfaction were significantly improved.

Summary: This study compared the outcomes of two different strategies for clinical T3 rectal cancer without enlarged lateral lymph nodes: preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) followed by total mesorectal excision (TME) and TME with bilateral lateral pelvic lymph node dissection (LPLND). The results showed that disease-free survival and overall survival were similar between the two groups, but the TME + LPLND group had a slightly higher rate of local recurrence. The TME + LPLND group also had more complications, including obturator nerve injury, isolated pelvic abscess, and urinary complications.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy and toxicity of hypofractionated preoperative chemoradiotherapy (HPCRT) combined with oral capecitabine in patients with rectal cancer. The results showed that a significant number of patients achieved pathological complete response and sphincter preservation. Tumor and nodal downstaging were also observed, and the survival rates were promising. The fractionation scheme showed similar results to long-course fractionation with less toxicity, making it beneficial for certain patients.

Summary: Hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma is a rare and aggressive malignancy with low survival rates. In this study of 179 patients, primary radiotherapy was the predominant treatment modality, and factors such as nodal status and tumor localization were identified as independent risk factors for reduced overall survival and relapse-free survival. The study also found that functional outcomes, such as laryngectomy-free survival, were influenced by these factors.

Summary: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) often presents with synchronous nodules of the lung (sNL), which may be benign, secondary malignancies or metastases. The incidence rate of sNL and synchronous second primary of the lung (sSPML) in HNSCC is 11.4% and 2.95% respectively. Smoking is a common risk factor for sSPML in HNSCC patients. Various diagnostic methods, including DNA analysis and PET scan, can help differentiate sSPML from metastasis. Early detection and treatment of sSPML improve survival rates, but further evidence is needed to support this advantage.

Summary: This retrospective study aimed to define the optimal strategy for treating loco-regionally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx (LSCC). The results showed that primary surgery had superior locoregional control compared to primary radiotherapy with cisplatin, but there was no significant difference in progression-free survival or overall survival. The ideal patient selection criteria for the treatment of loco-regionally advanced LSCC still need to be defined.
