Laser flash photolysis combined with competition kinetics with SCN- as the reference substance has been used to determine the rate constants of CH radicals with three fluorinated and three chlorinated ethanols in water as a function of temperature. The following Arrhenius expressions have been obtained for the reactions of OH radicals with (1) 2-fluoroethanol, k(1) (T) = (5.7 +/- 0.8) x 10(11) exp((-2047 +/- 1202)/T) M-1 s(-1), (2) 2,2-difluoroethanol, k(2)(T) = (4.5 +/- 0.5) x 10(9) exp((-855 +/- 796)/T) M-1 s(-1), (3) 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol, k(3)(T) = (2.0 +/- 0.1) x 10(11) exp((-2400 +/- 790)/T) M-1 s(-1), (4) 2-chloroethanol, k(4)(T) = (3.0 +/- 0.2) x 10(10) exp((-1067 +/- 440)/T) M-1 s(-1), (5) 2, 2-dichloroethanol, k(5)(T) = (2.1 +/- 0.2) x 10(10) exp((-1179 +/- 517)/T) M-1 s(-1), and (6) 2,2,2-trichloroethanol, k(6)(T) (1.6 +/- 0.1) x 10(10) exp((-1237 +/- 550)/T) M-1 s(-1). All experiments were carried out at temperatures between 288 and 328 K and at pH = 5.5-6.5. This set of compounds has been chosen for a detailed study because of their possible environmental impact as alternatives to chlorofluorocarbon and hydrogen-containing chlorofluorocarbon compounds in the case of the fluorinated alcohols and due to the demonstrated toxicity when chlorinated alcohols are considered. The observed rate constants and derived activation energies of the reactions are correlated with the corresponding bond dissociation energy (BDE) and ionization potential (IP), where the BDEs and IPs of the chlorinated ethanols have been calculated using quantum mechanical calculations. The errors stated in this study are statistical errors for a confidence interval of 95%. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Cryogenic electro-optic modulation in titanium in-diffused lithium niobate waveguides

Frederik Thiele, Felix Vom Bruch, Julian Brockmeier, Maximilian Protte, Thomas Hummel, Raimund Ricken, Victor Quiring, Sebastian Lengeling, Harald Herrmann, Christof Eigner, Christine Silberhorn, Tim J. Bartley

Summary: Lithium niobate is a promising platform for integrated quantum optics, where researchers aim to efficiently manipulate and detect quantum states by combining superconducting single photon detectors and modulators. The study demonstrates that the operating voltage of these modulators increases in low-temperature conditions, but the phase modulator maintains its broadband nature and successfully modulates light signals.

Summary: Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) are characterized by uncontrolled expansion of myeloid cells, disease-related mutations in certain driver-genes including JAK2, CALR, and MPL, and a substantial risk to progress to secondary acute myeloid leukemia (sAML). The phenotype of putative CD34(+)/CD38(-) stem cells and CD34(+)/CD38(+) progenitor cells in MPN were established. MPN stem cells display a unique phenotype, including cytokine receptors, immune checkpoint molecules, and other clinically relevant target antigens. The disease-initiating capacity of putative MPN stem cells was confirmed in NSGS mice. Phenotypic characterization of neoplastic stem cells in MPN and sAML should facilitate their enrichment and the development of stem cell-eradicating (curative) therapies.

Summary: Compared to conventional hydration (CH), the use of mannitol to shorten hydration time (SHM) can reduce the incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma undergoing chemoradiation. In addition, higher cumulative cisplatin doses can be achieved with SHM. Female patients are at higher risk of AKI and receive lower cumulative cisplatin doses.

Resolving the Formation Mechanism of HONO via Ammonia-Promoted Photosensitized Conversion of Monomeric NO2 on Urban Glass Surfaces

Jiangping Liu, Bai Li, Huifan Deng, Yan Yang, Wei Song, Xinming Wang, Yongming Luo, Joseph S. S. Francisco, Lei Li, Sasho Gligorovski

Summary: Experiments have confirmed that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) undergo a photosensitized reaction with nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ammonia (NH3) under UVA light, producing nitrous acid (HONO). This new mechanism does not require the formation of NO2 dimer and is facilitated by the presence of NH3. The results suggest that this new mechanism can be a dominant source of HONO in urban areas.

Demonstration of Hong-Ou-Mandel interference in an LNOI directional coupler

Silia Babel, Laura Bollmers, Marcello Massaro, Kai Hong Luo, Michael Stefszky, Federico Pegoraro, Philip Held, Harald Herrmann, Christof Eigner, Benjamin Brecht, Laura Padberg, Christine Silberhorn

Summary: Interference between single photons is crucial for various quantum optics experiments and applications in quantum technologies like communication and computation. Using lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) as a new material platform for integrated quantum optics allows for operation at telecommunication wavelengths and integration of setups for improved stability, compactness, and scalability. By implementing a Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference in LNOI directional coupler, we achieve a high raw HOM visibility of (93.5 ± 0.7)%, establishing the foundation for advanced quantum experiments in LNOI.

Fully guided and phase locked Ti:PPLN waveguide squeezing for applications in quantum sensing

Renato Domeneguetti, Michael Stefszky, Harald Herrmann, Christine Silberhorn, Ulrik L. Andersen, Jonas S. Neergaard-Nielsen, Tobias Gehring

Summary: This study presents a guided setup for single-mode squeezing on integrated titanium-indiffused periodically poled nonlinear resonators. By using single-mode fibers, a continuous-wave laser beam is delivered and the squeezed field is collected, with up to -3.17(9) dB of useful squeezing available in fibers. The generated squeezed light was applied in a fiber-based phase sensing experiment, showing a quantum enhancement in the signal-to-noise ratio of 0.35 dB. The investigation also reveals that photorefraction can cause system instabilities at high powers.

Lossy SU(1,1) interferometers in the single-photon-pair regime

Matteo Santandrea, Kai-Hong Luo, Michael Stefszky, Jan Sperling, Harald Herrmann, Benjamin Brecht, Christine Silberhorn

Summary: The paper investigates the performance of lossy SU(1,1) interferometers for single-photon pairs and examines the information contained in single counts and coincidences at the output. The classical Fisher information (FI) of both single and coincidence events is derived and studied as a function of internal and external losses. It is found that, in the absence of external losses, the FI of coincidence events is always higher or equal to that of single events. However, with external losses, the FI of single events can surpass that of coincidences. Additionally, coincidence measurement can help mitigate the effect of internal losses in the absence of external losses. Finally, when internal losses are above 50%, SU(1,1) interferometers outperform classical SU(2) interferometers.
