Summary: The adverse impact of common diseases like diabetes mellitus and acute hyperglycemia on morbidity and mortality from myocardial infarction (MI) has been well documented. The relationship between blood glucose and mortality appears linear, and this seems to be independent of a diagnosis of diabetes. This study investigates the influence of acute and prolonged hyperglycemia on the protective effect of transferred human RIPC-plasma and suggests that hyperglycemia might obstruct translation into the clinical setting.

Summary: This study evaluated the protective effects of liver ischemic preconditioning (RLIPC) on I/R injury in streptozotocin-induced type 1 diabetic rats. RLIPC significantly reduced infarct size and cardiac tissue damage, inhibited apoptosis, improved cardiac functions, and preserved cardiac morphology in diabetic hearts post I/R. Western blotting showed that RLIPC stimulated phosphorylation of ventricular GSK-3 beta and STAT-5, indicating its strong cardioprotective properties against myocardial I/R injury in diabetic hearts.

Summary: The cardioprotective effect of remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) has been observed in experimental studies but not in clinical trials. Propofol is believed to have a negative impact on the release of humoral factors after RIPC. Furthermore, comorbidities may interact with the cardioprotective properties of RIPC. This study found that propofol-free RIPC did not lead to the release of cardioprotective humoral factors in male patients undergoing CABG surgery, regardless of the presence of diabetes mellitus.

Summary: Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is associated with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), but its association with ASCVD risk is modified by the presence of coronary artery calcification (CAC). This study found that LDL-C is only associated with ASCVD events in patients with CAC, and not in those without CAC. This information is valuable for individualized risk assessment among middle-aged people with or without coronary atherosclerosis.

Summary: This study examined 84 patients with long COVID using qEMG and sfEMG, and performed muscle biopsies in a subset of patients. The results showed that the mean MUP duration was decreased in >= 1 muscles in 52% of the patients, and the mean jitter was increased in 17% of the patients in the tibialis anterior and 25% in the extensor digitorum communis. Muscle biopsies revealed damage of terminal nerves and motor endplate with abundant basal lamina material. These findings suggest a muscle pathophysiology behind fatigue in long COVID.

Summary: Heterozygous mice for the migraine-associated mutation (G301R) in the Na+,K+-ATPase alpha(2)-isoform have decreased expression of cardiovascular alpha(2)-isoform and exhibit a pro-contractile vascular phenotype associated with reduced cardiac efficiency. This study aims to assess the functional contribution of the alpha(2)-isoform to in vivo cardiovascular function and showed that the ouabain-induced vascular response was augmented in alpha(+/G301R)(2) mice, leading to suppressed cardiac function.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between beta-blocker dose and mortality following acute myocardial infarction. A nationwide cohort study in Denmark was conducted, and the results showed that any dose of beta-blocker was associated with a significant reduction in mortality compared to no treatment. The largest reduction in mortality was observed within the first year after acute myocardial infarction for doses >25%-50% of the recommended target dose, suggesting that higher doses are unnecessary.

BFRRE resulted in significant increases in muscle fiber morphology, integrated muscle protein synthesis, and muscle functional capacity without changes in muscle stem cells (MuSCs) and myonuclear content.

The second part focuses on ROS, providing an overview of molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in ischemia/reperfusion injury.
