Glioma is the most common cancer of the central nervous system but with few confirmed risk factors. It has been inversely associated with chicken pox, shingles and seroreactivity to varicella virus (VZV), as well as to allergies and allergy-associated IgE. The role of antibody reactivity against individual VZV antigens has not been assessed. Ten VZV-related proteins, selected for high immunogenicity or known function, were synthesized and used as targets for antibody measurements in the sera of 143 glioma cases and 131 healthy controls selected from the San Francisco Bay Area Adult Glioma Study. Glioma cases exhibited significantly reduced seroreactivity compared to controls for six antigens, including proteins IE63 [odds ratio (OR) = 0.26, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.12-0.58, comparing lowest quartile to highest) and the VZV-unique protein ORF2p (OR = 0.44, 95% CI: 0.21-0.96, lowest quartile to highest). When stratifying the study population into those with low and high self-reported allergy history, VZV protein seroreactivity was only associated inversely with glioma among individuals self-reporting more than two allergies. The data provide insight into both allergy and VZV effects on glioma: strong anti-VZV reactions in highly allergic individuals are associated with reduced occurrence of glioma. This result suggests a role for specificity in the anti-VZV immunity in brain tumor suppression for both individual VZV antigens and in the fine-tuning of the immune response by allergy. Anti-VZV reactions may also be a biomarker of effective CNS immunosurveillance owing to the tropism of the virus.

The dynamic material properties of stabilised rammed earth materials using cement and calcium carbonate residue

Kewei Liu, Megan Walske, Mi Zhou, Xihong Zhang

Summary: The use of rammed earth as a construction material has gained attention for its sustainability and low-cost potential. However, the mechanical performance of stabilized rammed earth, particularly under dynamic loading, is not well understood. This study experimentally investigates the quasi-static and dynamic material properties of cement and calcium carbonate residue stabilized rammed earth, and derives empirical formulae for the dynamic increase factor.

Hydrocarbons removal and microbial community succession in petroleum-contaminated soil under hydrogen peroxide treatment

Bing Yang, Mi Zhou, Yuan Meng, Keming Chen, Jie Xu, Xiangfu Huang, Yucheng Liu, Lingli Li, Lili Ma, Mingyan Chen

Summary: Chemical oxidation as a pretreatment for petroleum-contaminated soil, coupled with bioremediation, can have serious impacts on indigenous microorganisms and available nutrients. This study found that hydrogen peroxide treatments significantly promoted the removal of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), especially in the initial days, and also affected the levels of dissolved nutrients. Both chemical oxidation and nutrients contribute to changes in microbial community structure and diversity. However, the long-term effects of H2O2 as a pretreatment had little impact on the soil indigenous microbial community structure and actually facilitated the continuous removal of TPH by indigenous microorganisms.

The Genotype-Phenotype Correlation in Human 5α-Reductase Type 2 Deficiency: Classified and Analyzed from a SRD5A2 Structural Perspective

Jieun Seo, Saeam Shin, Sang-woon Kim, Su Jin Kim, Myeongseob Lee, Kyungchul Song, Junghwan Suh, Seung-Tae Lee, Yong Seung Lee, Hyun Wook Chae, Ho-Seong Kim, Jong Rak Choi, Sangwon Han, Ahreum Kwon

Summary: This study retrospectively evaluated the genotype-phenotype correlation of 19 Korean patients with 5 alpha-reductase type 2 deficiency (5 alpha RD2) from a structural perspective. The categorization of variants according to the SRD5A2 structure showed that certain mutations were associated with more severe phenotypes, while others were associated with milder phenotypes. The findings suggest that a genotype-phenotype correlation exists in 5 alpha RD2, and the structural approach can aid in predicting disease severity and guiding patient management and genetic counseling.

Genetic diagnosis of inborn errors of immunity using clinical exome sequencing

Soon Sung Kwon, Youn Keong Cho, Seungmin Hahn, Jiyoung Oh, Dongju Won, Saeam Shin, Ji-Man Kang, Jong Gyun Ahn, Seung-Tae Lee, Jong Rak Choi

Summary: Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) refer to a group of genetic disorders characterized by defects in the immune system, leading to increased susceptibility to infections and complications. This study evaluated the clinical utility of clinical exome sequencing (CES) for diagnosing IEI. CES was performed on 37 Korean patients with suspected IEI symptoms, signs, or laboratory abnormalities. CES successfully diagnosed IEI in 15 out of 37 patients (40.5%), detecting several previously unreported variants. The findings highlight the diagnostic value of CES in accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment of IEI.

Kyeongmin Kim, Se Hoon Kim, Jung-Yun Lee, Yoo-Na Kim, Seung-Tae Lee, Eunhyang Park

Summary: The expression of RAD51 is closely associated with prognosis in patients with ovarian high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC), and the changes in RAD51 expression status before and after chemotherapy have a greater impact on prognosis. Therefore, RAD51 expression status can serve as a predictive marker for the treatment of ovarian HGSC, and sequential monitoring of RAD51 status before and after treatment can reflect the biological behavior of the tumor.
