This research was conducted to investigate the effect of supplementation of zinc (Zn) and ascorbic acid (AA) in heat-stressed broilers. A total of 160-day-old broiler chicks of approximately the same weight and appearance were divided into four treatment groups (control, T1, T2, and T3). Control group was fed a standard diet without any supplementation. T1 was supplemented with Zn at the rate of 60 mg/kg of feed, T2 was supplemented with 300 mg/kg of feed AA, and T3 was supplemented with combination of Zn and AA. From week 3 to 5, heat stress environment was provided at the rate of 12 h at 25 degrees C, 3 h at 25 to 34 degrees C, 6 h at 34 degrees C, and 3 h at 34 to 25 degrees C daily. The results revealed that feed intake, body weight and feed conversion ratio (FCR), and weight of thymus, spleen, and bursa of Fabricius improved significantly (P<0.05) in T3 compared to the other treatments. Antibody titer against Newcastle disease (ND), infectious bursal disease (IBD), and infectious bronchitis (IB) increased significantly (P<0.05) in T2 and T3 groups. However, total leucocytes count, lymphocytes, and monocytes increased (P<0.05) in all treated groups compared to control. The results indicated that the supplementation of Zn or AA alone or in combination improved the performance and immune status of broilers reared under heat stress.

Summary: In the past 50 years, there has been a growing global demand for poultry meat due to increased concerns for health, ecology, safety, and equity. However, organic poultry farming, particularly the use of medicinal herbs, has gained significant attention and public demand recently, mainly due to concerns about antibiotic resistance. The ban on antibiotics in the poultry industry has led to increased interest in herbs as antibiotic alternatives. Aloe vera has been shown in various research studies to have nutritional benefits for improving poultry growth, immune status, and acting as an antibacterial and anticoccidial agent.

Enrichment of Dairy-Type Lamb Diet with Microencapsulated Omega-3 Fish Oil: Effects on Growth, Carcass Quality and Meat Fatty Acids

Summary: This experiment tested the hypothesis that adding omega-3 oil to feedlot pellets improves the favorable n-3 PUFA composition in meat. The study found that supplementing microencapsulated omega-3 oil in lamb feed positively influenced body weight and feed efficiency. The addition of omega-3 oil also impacted the color and physical traits of the Longissimus lumborum (LL) muscle, as well as the fatty acid composition of the meat.

Effect of Glutamine on the Growth Performance, Oxidative Stress, and Nrf2/p38 MAPK Expression in the Livers of Heat-Stressed Broilers

Xi Bai, Kunping Wang, Rifat Ullah Khan, Cheng Zhang, Hong Hu

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of glutamine (Gln) on growth performance, oxidative stress, Nrf2, and p38 MAPK pathway in the livers of heat-stressed broilers. Results showed that high temperature conditions decreased growth performance and induced oxidative stress in broiler livers. Dietary Gln improved the growth performance, antioxidant enzyme, Nrf2, and p38 MAPK expression in the livers of heat-stressed broilers. Gln can be used as a feed additive for broiler production in high-temperature environments.

Summary: The present study aimed to biomonitor heavy metals in three selected wildlife parks of Punjab, including lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn) and cobalt (Co). The analysis of soil, water, and feed samples revealed high concentrations of heavy metals in feed samples, followed by soil and water samples at Jallo Wildlife Park and Wildlife Park Bahawalnagar. Feathers samples showed the highest levels of heavy metals concentrations at all sites. The bioaccumulation of heavy metals in the feathers of captive birds made them a good indicator for biomonitoring.

Partial and total replacement of soybean meal with maggot larvae meal in broiler chicken diets: Impact on growth performance, nutrients digestibility, haemotological parameters and intestinal histomorphology

Momin Khan, Naila Chand, Sarzamin Khan, Shabana Naz, Abdulwahed Fahad Alrefaei, Mikhlid H. Almutairi, Dai Sifa, Rifat Ullah Khan

Summary: The study found that replacing soybean meal with maggot meal in broilers ration did not have a significant effect on body weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio. Furthermore, there were no significant differences observed in protein efficiency ratio, dressing percentage, apparent metabolizable energy, antibody titer, amino acid digestibility, organoleptic study, intestinal morphometry, hematological and serum parameters. These findings suggest that soybean meal can be fully substituted with maggot meal without adverse effects on the health and performance of broiler chicks.
