Summary: This study investigates the valorisation of lignin in a biorefinery based on lignocellulosic biomass by treating technical lignin with recombinant laccase and mediator. The treatment resulted in a preferential reduction of guaiacyl units in the recovered lignin. Phenolic compounds deriving from guaiacyl or p-hydroxyphenyl units were identified in the aqueous phases, with higher concentrations observed when an ionic liquid was involved in the treatment.

Summary: This work investigates the mechanism and conformation changes of cellulose regenerated from ionic liquids using anti-solvents. Water was found to be the best anti-solvent, with the ability to break the hydrogen bonds between cellulose and the ionic liquid. The conformation of cellulose also changes during the dissolution and regeneration processes.

Summary: This study aimed to enhance the biodelignification pretreatment of rice straw using laccase in the presence of ionic liquid or surfactant. The addition of [AMIM]Cl and TritonX-100 significantly increased the lignin removal compared to laccase only. The enzymatic saccharification efficiency of rice straw was improved by laccase pretreatment with ionic liquid or surfactant in a single system.

Summary: Ionic liquid crystals exhibit liquid-crystalline behavior and are stabilized by electrostatic, hydrogen bonding, and van der Waals interactions. Dicationic ionic liquid crystals, with two single-charged ions linked by a spacer, display similar local order and alignment as monocationic salts. Bond order parameters in dicationic smectic phase are lower compared to double-chain monocationic analogs, indicating reduced van der Waals forces.

Summary: This review examines the possible functional roles of liquid natural deep eutectic solvents (NaDES) in plants. It discusses their potential as compartments for storing and converting molecules with low water solubility, and as an ideal reaction medium for interactions between molecules with opposite dissolution equilibria. The review also explores the potential of NaDES in laboratory settings, highlighting their stability, catalytic activity, and toxicity adaptability. These findings are significant for the development of related fields.

Summary: Ionic liquids are considered the safest solvents in high-temperature applications due to their non-flammable properties, with thermogravimetric analysis being extensively used for studying their thermal stability. Isoconversional methods are found to be superior to Arrhenius methods in calculating activation energy, and the use of compensation effect and master plots is suggested for pre-exponential factor calculation. The structure of cations has some influence on thermal stability, but anions play a larger role. Developing dicationic ILs can lead to enhanced thermal stability.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations show that ionic liquids containing alkylated imidazoles exhibit a bimodal distribution of cation conformations (folded/unfolded), where the concentration of folded cations increases with temperature, reducing liquid cohesivity. At the interface, an outermost layer of cations can tilt towards and cover a layer of adsorbed anions, resulting in stability in transverse directions and instability in the normal direction at temperatures around thermal instability, limiting the rate of vaporization of neutral ion pairs.

Summary: This study presents the use of a novel ionic liquid and deep eutectic solvent, choline and glycolate (CGLY), as a platform for gastrointestinal administration of therapeutic antibodies. CGLY enhances paracellular transport of TNF alpha antibody in vitro and reduces intestinal mucus viscosity, improving antibody delivery. In vivo results in rats demonstrate that CGLY effectively delivers TNF alpha antibody into the intestinal mucosa and systemic circulation, with good tolerability observed in repeated dose studies.

Summary: This study mixed RAFT-made poly(ionic liquid) chains with an ionic liquid, leading to homogeneous and transparent solutions due to similarities in structure and polarity. Rheology investigation showed that the solution's viscoelastic properties can be finely tuned by adjusting the chain molar mass and concentration. The high ionic conductivity and multi-scale local homogeneity of the PIL/IL solutions were confirmed through X-ray scattering experiments and microscopy analysis.

Summary: A catalyst with an ionic liquid layer, fct-PtCo/C@ILs, was prepared by modifying the chemically ordered platinum-cobalt catalyst, fct-PtCo/C, using a hydrophobic ionic liquid, [BMIM] [TFSI], with high oxygen solubility. The modified catalyst showed significantly improved mass activity, specific activity, electrochemical durability, and power density compared to the commercial Pt/C catalyst. The addition of the ionic liquid reduced the generation of oxygenated species and promoted the release of catalytic active sites, resulting in the formation of a conductive layer that protected the catalyst surfaces from dissolution and corrosion.

Summary: Crosslinking affects the mechanical behavior and tissue metabolism of collagen-based tissues. Aging and diabetes alter the crosslinking type and density, thus changing tissue properties. High-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking and advanced-glycation end-products result in uniform deformation under daily activity, while low-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking does not. High-connectivity model displays more sliding, while AGEs induce instability in structures near the binding sites.

Summary: The potential of multi-layer nanoemulsions for improving the cellular uptake, antioxidant activity, and in vitro bioaccessibility of alpha-tocopherol was examined. The results showed that the multi-layer nanoemulsions significantly enhanced the cellular uptake and antioxidant activity of alpha-tocopherol compared to free coumarin 6. Furthermore, the use of chitosan and dextran sulfate as wall materials in the multi-layer nanoemulsions led to even higher cellular uptake, in vitro bioaccessibility, and antioxidant activity of alpha-tocopherol.
