Ticagrelor and the risk of Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia and other infections

Jawad H. Butt, Emil L. Fosbol, Thomas A. Gerds, Kasper Iversen, Henning Bundgaard, Niels Eske Bruun, Anders R. Larsen, Andreas Petersen, Paal S. Andersen, Robert L. Skov, Lauge Ostergaard, Eva Havers-Borgersen, Gunnar H. Gislason, Christian Torp-Pedersen, Lars Kober, Jonas B. Olesen

Summary: This study investigated the 1-year risks of Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia, sepsis, and pneumonia in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention and treated with ticagrelor or clopidogrel. The results showed that treatment with ticagrelor was associated with significantly lower risks of Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia, sepsis, and pneumonia compared to treatment with clopidogrel.

Prescribing antibiotics: Factors driving decision-making in general practice. A discrete choice experiment

Rikke Vognbjerg Sydenham, Dorte Ejg Jarbol, Malene Plejdrup Hansen, Ulrik Stenz Justesen, Verity Watson, Line Bjornskov Pedersen

Summary: This study aimed to assess factors influencing Danish GPs' decision to prescribe antibiotics for acute respiratory tract infections (RTIs) and identify different segments of GPs influenced by these factors. The results showed that the CRP value was the most important factor influencing GPs' decision to prescribe antibiotics, while other factors had heterogeneous effects on GPs.

Summary: This study aimed to address the challenge of subtyping Salmonella enterica at O-serogroup level by using FTIR spectroscopy. The results showed that the IRBT system has high accuracy and reliability in typing Salmonella enterica at serogroup level, while also being user-friendly and cost-effective.

Summary: This study assessed the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with community-acquired Staphylococcus aureus meningitis from Denmark and the Netherlands. The results showed that community-acquired S. aureus meningitis mainly occurred in patients with concurrent endocarditis or spondylodiscitis, and had a high case fatality rate.

Humoral immune response following a third SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine dose in solid organ transplant recipients compared with matched controls

Summary: Solid organ transplant recipients have diminished antibody response to COVID-19 vaccination, with comorbidities such as liver disease and diabetes having a significant impact on humoral immunity. A third vaccine dose significantly improves the immunogenicity in transplant recipients, although the overall antibody concentrations remain lower compared to controls. Breakthrough infections occur at a similar rate in both groups.

Assessing the quality of the anaerobic environment - a method developed to support EUCAST disk diffusion of anaerobic bacteria

Ulrik Stenz Justesen, Jenny Ahman, Erika Matuschek, Gunnar Kahlmeter

Summary: The purpose of this study is to establish a method for evaluating the anaerobic environment for the EUCAST disk diffusion antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) of anaerobic bacteria. The method is based on the association between a decrease in the metronidazole disk zone diameter and increasing oxygen levels. The results indicate that a zone diameter of >= 25 mm using a metronidazole 5 μg disk and the C. perfringens strain, tested with EUCAST recommendations, can be used to indicate that the anaerobic environment is of sufficient quality for culture and disk diffusion AST.

Development and Clinical Application of a Multilocus Sequence Typing Scheme for Bacteroides fragilis Based on Whole-Genome Sequencing Data

Flemming D. Nielsen, Marianne N. Skov, Thomas V. Sydenham, Ulrik S. Justesen

Summary: In this study, the first MLST scheme for Bacteroides fragilis, one of the most abundant pathogenic bacteria in the human gut microbiota, is presented. The scheme allows for standardized classification and monitoring of B. fragilis on a global scale and consolidates the majority of current isolate data. This MLST scheme provides a powerful tool for the study and monitoring of B. fragilis.

Performance of automated antimicrobial susceptibility testing for the detection of antimicrobial resistance in gram-negative bacteria: a NordicAST study

Truls S. Leegaard, Ulrik Justesen, Erika G. Matuschek, Christian Giske, NordicAST Study Grp Automated AST

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of commercially available automated antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) systems and found that they have limitations in detecting low-level resistance. The results showed significant errors and underestimation of resistance for several important antimicrobials. These findings raise doubts about the use of automated AST in the management of patients with serious infections.

Summary: This study evaluated multiple treatment failures to modern antiretroviral therapy in HIV-infected individuals and found that approximately 4% of them were difficult to treat. The difficult to treat group, compared to the non-difficult to treat group, was characterized by older age, higher prevalence of AIDS, lower CD4+ cell count, and higher risk of treatment failure.
