Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter spp. are being increasingly reported worldwide, including in South Korea, where we examined 144 representative isolates collected in a nationwide hospital survey in 2005. Metallo-beta-lactamases were detected in only 19.4% of isolates, none of which were Acinetobacter baumannii, whereas 74.3% of isolates (mostly A. baumannii) expressed bla(OXA) carbapenemase genes. Among the latter, 47 had bla(OXA-23)-like genes and 56 had upregulated bla(OXA-51)-like variants, including bla(OXA-66), (-83), (-109) and (-115); bla(OXA-115) was a novel variant, detected in two isolates. bla(OXA-72) (bla(OXA-40)-like) was detected in only a single Acinetobacter baylyi isolate, whilst three Acinetobacter calcoaceticus isolates had both bla(VIM-2)-like and bla(OXA-58) genes. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) suggested the spread of A. baumannii clones with OXA carbapenemases within and between hospitals. In conclusion, the recent increase in imipenem-resistant Acinetobacter spp. from South Korea is mostly due to OXA-type carbapenemases. Summary: This study demonstrated the fabrication of a highly stable and efficient nanobiosensor using OICs as linkers on graphene. OPE was shown to have higher binding energy and lower band gap compared to other OICs, and it improved the immobilization efficiency of bioprobes by forming a self-assembly monolayer. The MOGMFET constructed using this technology exhibited high sensitivity, high selectivity, and a low detection limit.

Summary: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection has caused a global pandemic of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Early diagnosis, isolation, and prevention are crucial due to the lack of specific antiviral drugs and the emergence of viral variants. Researchers have developed a new fluorescence detection method that can accurately detect SARS-CoV-2 in a short period of time with a low detection limit.

Risk factors and microbiological features of recurrent Escherichia coli bloodstream infections

Yong Chan Kim, Heun Choi, Young Ah Kim, Yoon Soo Park, Young Hee Seo, Hyukmin Lee, Kyungwon Lee

Summary: Understanding the risk factors and microbiological features in recurrent E. coli BSI can aid clinicians in their management planning. Data from 2017 to 2018 were collected to assess antimicrobial resistance rates and molecular epidemiology. Risk factors for recurrence included vascular catheterization, ESBL phenotype, and high SOFA score. The highest proportion of ST131 and ESBL genotype was observed in early onset recurrent BSI. Whole genome sequencing revealed the presence of various virulence factors, resistant genes, and plasmid types in all types of BSI. This knowledge is important for clinicians in managing recurrent E. coli BSI.

Altered gut microbiota in individuals with episodic and chronic migraine

Dongeun Yong, Hakbae Lee, Hyung-Gyu Min, Kyungnam Kim, Hyun-Seok Oh, Min Kyung Chu

Summary: This study investigated whether the composition of gut microbiota differed in participants with episodic migraine (EM) and chronic migraine (CM) compared to controls. The results showed significant differences in microbiota composition between the EM and CM groups and the control group. Moreover, a higher abundance of PAC000195_g was associated with lower headache frequency, while Agathobacter showed a significant negative association with severe headache intensity.

Comparative Analysis of the Molecular Characteristics of Group B Streptococcus Isolates Collected from Pregnant Korean Women Using Whole-genome Sequencing

Yangsoon Lee, Hye Gyung Bae, Dongju Won, Woobin Yun, Hyukmin Lee, Jong Rak Choi, Young Uh, Kyungwon Lee

Summary: In this study, the distribution of GBS isolates in pregnant Korean women was investigated. CC1 was the dominant lineage, followed by CC19, CC12, and CC17. The low prevalence of CC17 GBS colonization may explain the low frequency of neonatal GBS infections. Whole-genome sequencing is a useful tool for predicting antimicrobial susceptibility and capsular serotypes in GBS isolates.

Changing Epidemiology of Pathogenic Bacteria Over the Past 20 Years in Korea

Mi Hyun Bae, Min -Sun Kim, Taek Soo Kim, Sunjoo Kim, Dongeun Yong, Gyoung Yim Ha, Nam Hee Ryoo, Young Uh, Jong Hee Shin, Hye Soo Lee, Yong-Hak Sohn, Sue Shin, Mi-Na Kim

Summary: The distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility of pathogenic bacteria in Korea have changed significantly over the past 20 years. Staphylococcus aureus prevalence initially increased and then decreased, while Escherichia coli became the most common species with an increase in cefotaxime resistance. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii also increased in prevalence, along with imipenem resistance. Streptococcus agalactiae became the most common streptococcal species, and pneumococcal penicillin and levofloxacin susceptibility decreased.
