Summary: In this study, we analyzed the associations among histopathological tests, antigenemia assays, and mucosal PCR in UC patients with HCMV colitis. The HCMV-DNA copy number in colonic tissues was significantly associated with positive immunohistochemistry and antigenemia results. A cutoff value of 1300 copies/μg of HCMV-DNA was determined to predict positive antigenemia results. Additionally, the HCMV-DNA copy number correlated with the total UCEIS score and bleeding score, indicating its potential use in diagnosing HCMV colitis in UC patients.

Summary: A study found that the long noncoding RNA Gm31629 plays a crucial role in inflammatory bowel disease by promoting E2F pathways and cell proliferation, thus facilitating intestinal epithelial regeneration. Deficiency of Gm31629 may lead to worsened intestinal inflammation and delayed epithelial regeneration.

Summary: The study revealed that impaired EBV-specific immunity is evident in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), especially in those who are refractory to therapy. Mucosal loads of EBV and HCMV were significantly higher in refractory UC patients and correlated with disease activity indexes.

Summary: This study analyzed the usefulness of serum gelsolin as a serological biomarker for clinical and endoscopic activities in ulcerative colitis. The findings indicate that serum gelsolin level correlates with clinical and endoscopic activities in ulcerative colitis, has higher sensitivity and specificity than C-reactive protein, and can detect mucosal healing, suggesting its potential as a biomarker for ulcerative colitis.

Summary: The paracaspase MALT1 plays a crucial role in mucosal inflammation. It is highly expressed in colonic epithelial cells of UC patients and experimental colitis. Mechanistically, MALT1 protease function inhibits ferroptosis and contributes to NF-kappa B signaling and STAT3 signaling, which are involved in inflammation and tissue healing.

Summary: This study found that serum CMV PCR can be used as a non-invasive test for diagnosing CMV colitis in UC patients, and it has excellent negative predictive value and a strong correlation with CMV positivity on histology.

Summary: The study aimed to define the clinical relevance of CMV detection by mucosal PCR in UC patients. CMV infection was found to be responsible for only a minority of UC flares, mostly in steroid-resistant cases. Most patients non-responsive to antiviral treatment responded to increased anti-inflammatory treatment.

Summary: Mucosal healing is an important prognostic factor in the management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. It can predict clinical remission and resection-free survival. There are two levels of mucosal healing: endoscopic healing and histological healing. Drug therapies and new techniques can have an impact on mucosal healing, but cannot provide a definitive cure.

Summary: The composition of gut microbiome differs significantly between patients with clinically stable UC and non-IBD controls, as well as between preserved and altered mucosa groups in the UC group. Gut microbial signatures may explain symptom manifestations in UC patients with significant mucosal changes.

Summary: CMV reactivation in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) is significantly associated with disease severity, pancolitis, older age of UC onset, and the use of glucocorticoids, immunosuppressants, and azathioprine. However, infliximab treatment does not increase the risk of CMV reactivation, while 5-aminosalicylic acid is linked to a lower risk. Monitoring for these risk factors is crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment in UC patients.

Summary: This study aimed to reveal the molecular features of ulcerative colitis (UC) and develop a stratification scheme using genome-scale transcriptomes. The results showed that UC patients can be classified into three subtypes with distinct molecular and cellular signatures, and they also have different responses to biologics. This research provides critical insights into the pathophysiological features of UC and suggests potential personalized treatment approaches.

Summary: This study found that carnosol (CA) has inhibitory effects on ulcerative colitis. The results showed that CA can alleviate clinical symptoms and tissue damage of colitis, as well as suppress inflammatory cell infiltration and cytokine expression. In addition, CA can restore epithelial barrier functions and maintain the homeostasis of intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes. Mechanistically, CA exerts its anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting endoplasmic reticulum stress in epithelial cells.

Summary: Limited information is available on the impact of pre-engraftment CMV DNAemia on clinical outcomes following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). This retrospective multicenter study involving 878 patients found that patients with pre-CMV DNAemia had a higher probability of recurrent episodes but comparable rates of CMV disease. Overall mortality and non-relapse mortality at 1-year after allo-HSCT were similar across patients with pre- and post-engraftment CMV DNAemia episodes.

Summary: The therapeutic effect of Dendrobium huoshanense polysaccharides (DHP) on ulcerative colitis (UC) is confirmed in this study. Through metabolomics and gut flora analysis, it was found that DHP alleviates UC symptoms by improving colonic mucosal barrier function, reducing inflammation, and modulating the composition of gut microbiota.
